I Have No Idea What I’m Doing

Hello, Brains! I get a lot of comments about how I have things so together and clean and organised… like I know what I’m doing. Yeeeaaahhh. Soooo… about that! Lets talk about self-doubt!

I loved your most recent video. With you and your fiancé on conflict and how much a person assumes what another person is thinking. I shared that on my FB. Your great!

This is so true! I'm not sure if the "I don't know what I'm doing" is also true for neurotypicals to the same extent, but I personally am 100% with you on that - and by now I also know, that it will never change (for me). My current job is to be a department lead in the IT department of a bank - but I have absolutelty no experience in leading a team, working in the financial industry or working in IT. Seriously, no experience at all. But my team is happy and my employer promoted me, so "knowing what I'm doing" does not seem to be an important factor to "being successful at what I'm doing" or "enjoying what I'm doing". Also you inspired me and my wife to start our own podcast about ADHS last year, which is rather succesful but we have no training whatsoever in doing podcasts. I have the feeling so often, that I just accepted it as beeing part of my life. About your question what you should be doing with your job: What I love most about your chanel is the great mix of humor, research & techniques and sharing personal stories. So I personally would absolutely love, if you continue just that :) Additionally it could be a great chance if you start some work in supporting other ADHD related creators as you really have huge experience an know more about it than most of us ^^

Oh, Jessica! I needed this, didn't know I needed this, and you showed up and gave me this gift. " 'I don't know what I'm doing' feels like failure." Perfect. Exactly. Perhaps now I can loosen my grip on the core belief that I am failing...at everything. I'm not failing! I just don't know what I'm doing! YET! Thank you for continuing generosity of spirit.

Jessica, you only “don’t know what you’re doing” in the sense that, as you touched on, your life is constantly changing and doesn’t come with a user’s manual. However, you are in control of your life, which is more important. You may not always know what’s behind the next set of doors, but you still make your choices and walk through them. Look where those choices have gotten you. You learned how to accommodate and love yourself and scale the barriers erected by the ableist world around you. You started and maintained a successful channel on YouTube. You wrote a freaking book (and are working on another one). You and your partner cultivated a positive and loving relationship. You just brought life into this world. Whenever you have self-doubt, just tell yourself, “My choices have taken me this far. I trust in my capacity to make good choices. I trust in my capacity to adapt to new challenges. I am in control.” I’d love to see more content about what brings you joy as an ADHDer (sensorily, emotionally or otherwise).

I long ago gave up on properly folding a fitted sheet. I just do my best to fold it into a more compact shape and shove it into the closet. Gave up on learning how to tie a tie, as well. Not worth putting my spoons into something only other people place importance on.

I sort of envy you not knowing what to do next, my life most of the time works like "oof I've finally tackled this big thing, I worked a little too hard on it, time for some self-care" Life: Haha, nope, here's your next challenge you didn't see coming. To answer your question: what I like most on your channel are the vlogs explaining what the symptoms and effects of ADHD are and suggestions on how to deal with them. I am far less interested in explaining how a certain app or something might help. Despite my faith in you, I typically don't trust youtube/insta/etc endorsements. I also enjoy the conversations you have with others about how to deal with ADHD, like with your partner about your relationship, with... Caroline? about friendship and other professionals. A topic I'm currently neck-deep in and would love for you to do an item on: ADHD in women going through menopause. YOWZA. This is fuuun. Did I say fun? I meant the other kind of fun. Format wise: I can focus on 10 minute vlogs, but not on podcasts. My brainy husband is less about the vlogs and more about written form (so transcripts DO work for him). I do YT, but not tiktok or insta.

Isabella Reed

I would definitely like to see you do a tutorial on folding towels, and fitted sheets, Jessica.

Rick Pye

I like the vlogs but a podcast would be cool too

To answer your question, you are already doing it: Providing Brains options, insights, and context into why and how things are happening to and around us.

I just finished explaining that often, my work engagements are scenarios in which the client expects me to provide them with an experienced context for a problem. In essence, some scenarios require 100% learning on the fly so that the client doesn't have to. I wasn't a CIO/CTO ten years ago, but I had to start learning these skillsets. There was/is a LOT of self-reflection and acknowledging that I don't know what I don't know sometimes.

Tony Hunt

Such an important thing -- NO ONE knows what they're doing and if they do, I guarantee it's not *everything*. We are not meant to be able to do every task, every skill, all the time. That's just madness.
