Hello, Brains! Having trouble sleeping with ADHD? Same. In this video, I talk about why it can be so hard to get to sleep when you have ADHD—like executive function struggles and common sleep disorders like insomnia and restless leg syndrome. Sleep is super important for managing ADHD, but it’s not always easy to get. Let’s break down what’s really going on so we can learn strategies for our sleep difficulties.
I started medication about 2 months ago, but due to anxiety disorder, I've been switching to try different kinds and also a way smaller dosage the doctor advised. I sort of found the "right dosage" for now, but lately, I come home from my job beginning of the night, I crash.. I need to ly down.. I fall "a sleep", 4 /5 hours later I wake up and that's that.... Durinng the day I crash again, and when that's during the job, it ain't nice. So my sleeping pattern is totally lost now... Whiel before the medicate, I was halve a night awake and then I just slept 8 hours and all was fine... If this keeps going, it will break me (It wont come that far, but pff) Im not taking medication daily anymore, just when I think it will do me well. For the rest I have Cognitive Therapy witch is great (How to "Agenda and plan").

Hahahaha classic Jessica. I literally had the conversation about my sleep being bad for the past months with my partner this morning. Then this dropped.

Also, I know meds don't work for everyone, but if you have trouble sleeping it's definitely worth at least talking to your doctor. I didn't think anything would help me but when I mentioned offhand that I was tired all the time, my doc took it seriously and recommended seeing a sleep specialist. I'll always be grateful for that.

I feel this sooooooo hard. I was never ever ever a morning person. Standard advice was always that if you wanted to start regularly getting up early you can just start getting up earlier and over the course of a couple of weeks your body would totally adjust. I had a 2-hr morning commute for 7 months and not once did I ever adjust. I'd wake up and get myself out the door and immediately fall asleep on the hour-long train ride.
I had insomnia for over a decade, did not get more than 10 nights of uninterrupted sleep in that time. Finally saw a sleep doc, was not diagnosed with anything, but he prescribed trazodone and it was life changing. I can make it through the day without falling asleep at my desk! I was home the first weekend after I'd started taking it and it wasn't until about 6 pm that I realized that was the first time in forever I had made it through a weekend without needing a nap.
I really appreciate when you said that practicing sleep hygiene doesn't really work for us ADHDers. I tried good sleep hygiene for years and it never made a difference.
