Added 2021-02-03 05:26:22 +0000 UTCHi, all!
First things first: thank you all so much for supporting Maintenance Phase. We didn't expect a response like this (in listenership or in patrons!), and it's been such a joy to see the outpouring of support from you all. Thank you so much for listening, for supporting, and for continuing to spread the word.
We're starting to kick around some ideas for bonus Patreon content, but while we do that, we wanted to ask you all for your input. What kind of bonus content do you all want to see here? Any & all requests welcome--just let us know!

I've loved listening to maintenance phase, thank you. You're both hilarious, thoughtful and so thorough with your research. I'm grateful to my friend who recommended this and have now gone on a summer long binge of 'If books could kill' and 'you're wrong about' too. As for topics, I'm intrigued by the rise of the food supplement drink, Huel, here in the UK, if that's a topic worth exploring.

2024-07-13 23:14:55 +0000 UTCJust found out about your pod and have binge-listened to every episode (some of them twice). Aubrey has the best laugh on the planet and I love her reactions (woof, what?! Oh sure, yeah, THAT makes sense lol). Please make a T-shirt "I'm having a punch, cry, vomit reaction". Every episode makes me lol. Literally. Please make more episodes about anticonvulsive and everything.

2024-02-25 11:37:13 +0000 UTCAbsolutely love the podcast! I just read an article in the Lifestyle section of the newspaper (procrastinating at work!) on The Human Being Diet where the woman lost 19kg (“and kept it off”!)… it sounds like she starved herself to me, but I’d love to hear your review.

2023-10-25 17:15:28 +0000 UTCThank you for doing what you do!! I’d like to hear thoughts/dialogue on the new trend happening in Weight Watchers / Noom / Others to prescribe meds (often diabetic meds) for weight loss. Access to these meds seems near impossible, otherwise, and insurance certainly does not cover weight loss (another huge issue). What are the pros and cons? Interested in knowing more and your take on it!

2022-09-11 20:34:31 +0000 UTCHi I’m REALLY late to this conversation! I’m in the health food (I know… that term is even fraught with nonsense) industry and have been for 14 years. So oh man… I’ve seen and HEARD a lot!! I’d love your take on the blood type diet. People SWEAR by it and it seems so ridiculous!!! Thank you for all of the valuable insight you give on an industry that gets a lot right and gets SO MUCH wrong

2022-09-01 21:31:36 +0000 UTCForgive me if this has already been suggested, hard to search mentions on the app (or I’m dumb!) but I’d love your take on the documentary ‘Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead’ (2010). After watching in 2011, I embarked on a 45 day “juice cleanse” wherein I ONLY DRANK FRESH JUICE and around day 40 I was so desperate to chew something again that I found myself thinking about crashing my literal car out of sheer frustration. Sadly I can’t say it was the last diet I ever went on, but it remains the diet I look back on to highlight the depth of my fatphobia at that time and general capacity for disordered eating.

2022-07-19 17:52:33 +0000 UTCRandom bonus episode topic suggestion! I think it would be fun for Mike and Aubrey to read excerpts from those ubiquitous "What this celebrity eats in a day" articles and make each other guess who the celebrity is. I listen to the Amanda Chantal Bacon one whenever I'm sad and need cheering up, and every other diet roundup I encounter is generally less funny but equally untethered from reality.

2022-06-02 16:51:35 +0000 UTCI would love to hear the real story about Blue Zones, the nutritional perspective of evolutionary biology. One bit of research on The Biggest loser. There is research showing that former contestants have permanently reduced their metabolisms as a result of the extreme methods on the show. Loved the Goop episode, though! I’d love to hear you dissect more Netflix episodes, if Michael can stand it!

2022-05-15 11:53:04 +0000 UTCHi Guys, I love you, pure and simple 🙂 You've helped me see myself for the person I am inside. You've also opened my eyes (and mind) to actually feel sorry for that gorgeous Barbie blonde friend (?) who needs to constantly compare herself to everyone around to convince herself that she is somehow better, more beautiful, healthier...blah blah blah... I have come to understand that I, in all my glory, am in a much better place than her. It allows me to tolerate the false "I'm fat, but oh! You look great!" bullshit I wouldn't trade places with her for all the tea in China. 🙂 Thanks for your podcast. I'm just sad that I have caught up. xoxo

2022-04-28 16:39:07 +0000 UTCI would love an episode on actually medically necessary diets that have been co-opted by diet culture. You did an episode on Keto, which is an example, but unfortunately there are so many more. In my own life, gluten free is an example. I have celiac disease so avoiding gluten is absolutely necessary for my health. However a gluten free diet has now been marketed for weight loss for people who don’t have celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity. (And FWIW, I didn’t lose weight after getting diagnosed and cutting out gluten.) Medical bias is a nuance here too - historically doctors often had a perception that people with untreated celiac are always thin because they are malnourished. This leads to fat people experiencing delays in getting properly diagnosed. It took me a long time to get diagnosed despite presenting typical celiac symptoms and part of that might be because I am fat.

2022-04-27 20:17:44 +0000 UTCWould love to hear an episode about personal trainers and their brand of wellness; the never-ending before+after shots, pushing of calorie counting etc. Many of them here in the UK seem to follow the same mantra and it's almost always 'you're overweight because you're not prioritising your health' bla bla bla - they're everywhere!!

2022-04-20 19:14:33 +0000 UTCI knew some old-school vegans from when I volunteered in a vegan café (in a quite deprived area interestingly enough - it was cool to be able to feed a bunch of people well without animal products and with hearty vegan food, not half a carrot or something!). They were doing it for animal rights reasons, not for the "body beautiful" or whatever. This was mid-00s, before it all got co-opted by the clean eaters, wellness.

2022-03-10 06:26:52 +0000 UTCIMHO, I think it's gonna be so dependent on individual bodies at this point in our nutritional research. Indigenous arctic communities eat diets full of mostly animal fats and live long healthy lives. Japanese diets are a lot of fish and white rice and noodles and have long healthy lives. We just don't know yet and also there's a pretty compelling case that everyone is different. There's also a pretty compelling case that psychosomatic effects are real, so if massive amounts of media says gluten makes you feel tired, you might get actually tired after gluten. There's also a pretty good study I read about where Thai women absorbed more nutrients than American women when eating the same food, because it was non-americanized Thai food and they felt more comfortable with it. So in my humble opinion, it's a crapshoot right now, and the best option is to remove yourself from all of the narratives and just enjoy food, note how you feel after, and move your body when you can, and note how you feel after, and trust over time that you are smart and you know you and you obviously wanna feel good so you'll make the food decisions that make you feel good.

2022-03-06 13:40:20 +0000 UTCSo the debunking is great, but what actually is a healthy diet? I know for sure that I enjoy my pleasant, easy poops after eating high fiber foods, and I can feel inflammation after eating lots of sugar for a few days in a row. But, like, I wish there was a good book to turn to that told me what was actually helpful. Is there such a book? It could be called “Pretty Good Nutrition and Important Stuff You Should Know.”

2022-02-17 20:58:56 +0000 UTCI listened to your Super Size Me episode (never had to watch it, never will, thank you for your service), and it reminds of all the McDonald's ads in the 80s and 90s that amounted to "McDonald's is just good, wholesome food; our buns provide 10% of your DV of calcium". I would be surprised to see them in Sports Illustrated for Kids, but it makes sense now: it wasn't a magazine for kids who wanted to be Junior World Champion anything, it was for kids who could probably never afford to be. (And yes, Youth sports would probably be a great future topic.)

2022-02-17 11:23:29 +0000 UTCPlease do an episode on Beachbody’s 2B Mindset. I think most people know that beachbody is a notorious fitness MLM but a few years ago they added a course you could take called the 2B Mindset where registered dietician Ilana Mulstein teaches you how to lose weight “without dieting.” It’s very much a diet but packaged as a mindshift change. You follow her 2 bunnies principle which is 1. Water First which is basically drinking half your body weight in water a day, 2. Veggies Most where as long as 50% of your plate is always veggies you’ll lose weight, 3. Weigh yourself every day, and 4. Track everything you eat. There’s a ton of sad recipes where you eat zucchini or cauliflower instead of pasta, pancakes make with egg whites and bananas, that sort of stuff. You’re also pressured into buying Shakeology and entirely different BB scam. I wasted money. I was hungry and sad.

2022-02-15 22:30:16 +0000 UTCI am listening to the supersize episode and I have so many feelings! It reminded me of when comedian Bill Maher went off on a rant on his late night show about it being time to shame fat people more (‘cause that never happens 🙄) and James Corden responded to it on his late now show. And, now, James Cordon is advertising for Weight Watchers 🤦♀️. Oh! Oh! And cities (New York?) passing laws to reduce the sizes of soft drinks that you can buy to reduce obesity rates. There’s so much of this crap out there. I’m sure you two amazing people will find ways to work these things into upcoming episodes. (Edit to add: you just worked in the cheeseburger bills! Thank you!)

2022-02-15 11:56:38 +0000 UTCI am loving this podcast! I note this post is from last year, so I really hope you're still reading through these comments for possible ideas. I spent many years going through various eating disorder treatments. I was diagnosed at 15, so for some time I had little say over my treatment process, and my mom really didn't grasp what I needed in my recovery process. At one point, she sent me to a retreat treated sugar (and other 'trigger foods') similar to how alcohol/dugs may be treated in AA. The retreat leaders didn't eat ANY added sugar and some hadn't for years. Their idea of ED recovery was to forever abstain from these trigger foods. I have thought so much about this experience, and I'm wondering if there's any research out there on this type of 'treatment' (please note that I don't consider this a treatment AT ALL, and I think it was actually very detrimental to my recovery). Thank you so much!

2022-01-31 14:18:41 +0000 UTCHello Ruth, I just coincidentally saw your comment and I agree with you. An episode about fat-bias in gynecology and obstetrics would be extremely interesting to me. 2022-01-30 19:14:56 +0000 UTCHi guys, just listening to your mailbox episode and i think you 100% need to make this one public - it's not because it's awesome, because it is. It's because you're speaking to clueless people who email you and they will never hear this if it's on Patreon. If it's free and out there, so an average person should really just find it as the first thing they see. Love you, and keep on doing this.

2022-01-29 02:43:26 +0000 UTCI have a few I would want you guys to go over: fat-bias in gynecology and obstetrics (I was told I my BMI was too high to have a baby, and if I did they wouldn't take my insurance) supplement stores (are they even really going to do anything for you?) And are clothes getting smaller? Because I've been wearing and XL for years, and now all of a sudden they don't go up past my thighs, sometimes not even XXL fit. I've been at 260lbs practically the whole time too, so it ain't me changing. Lastly, I'd love to hear your thoughts on intuitive eating, because that's actually what got me started on all of the anti-diet information and has helped me immensely

2022-01-20 16:39:41 +0000 UTCHello from Montana! I am a brand new supporter. I wanted to support you and finally did it because I can’t get enough and I was out of episodes! Goes without saying but I love you guys- I love the show. Stumbled upon you and the Rachel Hollis sodes (when only one was out) and barely got by for a week waiting for part two. I would love for you to do a deep dive on glennon Doyle. And not find anything bad. But really- I had a brief period in my life where I was attending and “interesting” church and there is so much there (Rachel Hollis adjacent) with these Christian women mommy bloggers/writers. Interesting stuff. I like Glennon and obviously she changed. But what do you think now?
Rachel Fox
2022-01-20 16:38:11 +0000 UTCI watched it on YouTube as a younger teenager. Definitely some trauma related to what was going on in my head and what I was wanting for my body related to that show. It was so awful. The worst part is that they would make them sit across from each other as they ate their meals. So the larger participant would generally have like a piece of toast or a cup of coffee and be forced to sit, usually hungry because they are used to much larger portions, just watching as someone, who has been subsiding on a significantly lower calorie diet, make them selves physically sick trying to scarf down food. It was terrible.

2022-01-18 21:07:23 +0000 UTCFirst of all. Thank you so much. Absolutely love the podcast. Secondly I want a BeachBody episode so bad. The fact that it’s an MLM. The wackadoodle workouts shilled out by anyone who claims to be a fitness professional because they bought a starter pack. The meal plans designed to induce eating disorders (just the color-coded Tupperware in general). The supplements. Freaking Shakeology. I just want a deep dive.
Fernanda
2022-01-18 21:03:16 +0000 UTCReally love what you guys do and can’t get enough! I’m a personal trainer and love my job but have always been skeptical about the overwhelming amount of information we have especially regarding weight and diets. Your podcast is really helping me learn how to talk to my clients in a better way and shift their mindsets away from diet culture and weight loss to health done their own way! Thank you thank you!
Molly Brown
2022-01-18 18:45:57 +0000 UTCYou guys are my favorite podcast hands down! I think it would be fun to have a bonus episode about badass fat people from history, either important or interesting figures that people don't talk about as much or figures that not many people know were fat or ones who have been "thin-washed" in media representations. This suggestion is inspired by Kate Manne's opinion piece in the NYT about diet culture where she mentions the difficulties of being fat in academia and people digging at Desmond Hume for his weight.

2022-01-10 18:53:04 +0000 UTCJust wanted to share how much I absolutely LOVE this show! I just recently discovered this after it was mentioned on another podcast. I loved it so much that I went back and listened to all the episodes. I want to thank you so much for doing this. You both blow my mind every week and you’re doing a public service! First podcast I’ve ever contributed to. Forever thankful.

2022-01-09 03:02:31 +0000 UTCBig fan of the show! How about the 10K steps a day as marketing to get us all buying FitBit/Garmin/tracker of choice? Or the wellness data industry in general? Another one is Gillian McKeith in the UK. Had a crazy TV show ostensibly about helping people with their diet but really was an exercise in shaming families and poking people’s poop (yes, that really happened ‘for science’). No longer on tv, she seems to have slid into anti-vax territory.

2022-01-07 20:02:04 +0000 UTCOkay I would love to hear if Aubrey has this particularly toxic diet book and if so I’d love to here her thoughts on it. It’s, Reshaping It All: Motivation for Physical and Spiritual Fitness by Candace Cameron Bure, you heard that right, Candace Cameron Bure. It is so bad in so so many ways.

2022-01-07 19:16:47 +0000 UTCI would love to hear an episode on David Goggins - he’s somehow all over my social media all of a sudden (damn you algorithms!!), and a quick Google made me so upset so I can only imagine what kind of rage your in depth research would provoke!

2022-01-06 19:46:39 +0000 UTCI would love this! It makes me so mad--all the celebrities who spend $$$ on non-invasive procedures at the derm (laser, Morpheus 8, Ultherapy etc) and then have the temerity to say it is all WATER. Um, no. It's not water. You spent $$$$$$$ on your fucking face. Also, please go look at Dr. Jacono's IG feed. He's a plastic surgeon. He starts at about $125K. Yes you read that right. Not $60K like some of the commenters on his feed say--they are just guessing and they are guessing wrong. People can do what they want with their faces and I'm not here to tell anyone what to spend on, but I also don't think that lying and saying it is water consumption is ethical. How about say nothing instead????

2022-01-06 07:10:38 +0000 UTCI would love to address weight loss surgeries. I got the Lap Band back in 06. Many many awkward vomit moments later, surprise! They don't perform that operation anymore. Now it's too expensive for insurance to get it removed.

2022-01-05 15:40:27 +0000 UTCIn the UK we had an awful show called 'supersize vs superskinny' that was on for years and really warped my understanding of bodies and weight. All of the food they each ate in a week was poured into clear tubes for some reason and then they were made to stand in ill fitting nude underwear with cameras spinning around taking zoomed in video and photos. They moved into a house together and then swapped diets for the week with no information or advice? The more I remember the worse it gets..

2021-12-31 05:13:37 +0000 UTCAubrey and Mike, you are brilliant and wonderful! In the last two weeks I’ve binged about half of the episodes so far, and am super excited to listen to the rest, and to all the bonus content. You both mention Intermittent Fasting in several episodes but I’d love to hear more about IF. Thanks so much for this hugely important, valuable, and entertaining work that you are doing.

2021-12-29 01:00:14 +0000 UTCHow about store sizing? For the amount of women ( and men) that are above a size 10 the selection is abysmal. It’s sending a very specific message about who stores want wearing their clothing. I’m a millennial, and some of my worst teen body image memories involved going into Abercrombie and Victoria’s Secret. Both stores publicly made statements about only selling to an “attractive customer.” I have to say, I’ve seen some very recent inclusive sizing and diversity in models at stores.

2021-12-16 16:59:16 +0000 UTCYes! Just heard about it from a friend who struggles with autoimmune issues. It seems to really help her feel more comfortable and less inflamed but there seem to be gaps that make me skeptical. I don't understand why she can't have frozen fruits that were picked at peak freshness? And any time a diet recommends eliminating global staples like legumes and grains, I am wary. Oh and of course because Gundry also sells supplements to help with all those pesky lectins...

2021-12-03 16:27:53 +0000 UTCHey! I'm new to patreon. I love your podcast a lot. Is there a place to chat about the regular episodes and general content related stuff? I'm currently also listening to Aubrey's book on Audible. I'm bummed she didn't narrate it cos I love her voice, but the content is super. 2021-12-01 13:23:12 +0000 UTCTopic for future episode: interview Jamie Loftus from aack cast about Cathy comics dieting and food relationship. It’s truly a reactionary comic of it’s time. It’s crazy just looking at the commercials she did. One commercial for Betty Crocker where she is binge eating cake in the middle of the night. The next is a McDonald’s salad commercial with low fat dressing. But I say this with love for Cathy Guisewite. And yes she did an ad with weight watchers

2021-11-24 23:23:22 +0000 UTCHello fellow methodology queens! New patreon, I've been binging old episodes of the show and loving it! I would love an episode on Nutrisystem. I went on it when I was about 25, and $300 monthly was a lot of money to spend. I justified it by saying that it was all my food for the month, and if I added up groceries and dining out, that was about the same! The bait and switch of Nutrisystem is that it ISN'T all the food you need in a month. When you eat one of their breakfast foods, you're supposed to pair it with a serving of a fruit and a dairy. Lunches are paired with fruit and salad, and then dinners are supposed to be paired with a dairy and two vegetables. So you still need to buy milk/cheese and fresh fruit and veg regularly. Also when it first arrived, I remember thinking the food wasn't THAT bad, but by the end of the month, I hated all of it. When you cancel, you HAD TO CALL and talk to a person, who has a whole script to convince you to stay. "But haven't you been happy with your weight loss? If you didn't have any weight loss, did you REALLY stick to the Nutrisystem method? What if you tried it for one more month to make sure you know all your results?"
Casey Connor
2021-11-23 20:40:56 +0000 UTCI also want an episode on Wii Fit! I haven't stepped on the "balance board" in at least 5 years, but I can still perfectly hear "that's obese!" in my head.

2021-11-06 22:25:14 +0000 UTCHi! New listener but big fan! Sending in a request for a prominent and super problematic figure during my childhood, Dr. Laura. She gives a lot of abhorrent advice to parents to basically abuse their children into losing weight, and equally abhorrent “advice” to women about losing weight to save their marriage (or blames their divorce on their weight). Really horrible stuff, would obviously love to hear about it in greater detail!

2021-10-28 15:29:55 +0000 UTCHi random internet person, I love your comment because: I have been reading his books my whole life like since 5th or 6th grade - I just read his brand new book and had the same revelation because the main character has to be in disguise and wears a fake pregnancy belly to disguise himself as a fat nerd, and there are... problems. 2021-10-28 11:40:42 +0000 UTCI've always been a reader and love grabbing popular titles. Which is why I've always felt a bit left out having not read a Stephen King novel. Deciding to remedy that I picked up my first King novel during this October season with Mr. Mercedes. I have been absolutely shocked at King's constant body commentary and fat shaming. It is honestly featured on nearly every page (maybe this is why his books are so insanely long?!). I have no idea if this is present in all of his novels, but would love your take on this and other instances within fiction.

2021-10-26 16:57:22 +0000 UTCThe Weigh Down Diet book was really the first diet book I read and it is what started my journey to disordered eating and many yo-yos. I was 20. 23 years later I’m now not religious and have no desire to be ever again and trying to let go of diet culture.
Katharine Macy
2021-10-26 02:09:23 +0000 UTCI had previously sent an email about this but I would love to see a regular show or a bonus episode about the lack of inclusivity in the outdoor sports industry. I work in a ski retail shop, I’m a size 16 and I literally can only fit in one jacket and one pair of pants in the entire store (which aren’t my style because they assume if you are “bigger” you are older and want old lady outfits. Not only do most brands not make sizes above XL or even in some case large!! But the sizes they do make almost always run small, so people have to size up and even people who usually wear a size large sometimes are left with very little options. We are always told it’s because they brands are designing for the tall, skinny, European/Nordic women. I know this is not just an issue in the ski world, it’s an issue kind of across the board when it comes to athletic wear, especially for women. We don’t get clothes made for our true sizes and we sure as heck don’t get models or even mannequins in our sizes. Yes some brands are starting to do better with the help of several plus sized athletes like Mirna Valerio (you could do an episode on her and other athletes like her!!) but it’s still pretty few and far between and it definitely has not cracked into the hiking/skiing world.
Shannon Minghella

2021-10-24 22:56:25 +0000 UTCHi fam!❤️ I'm obsessed with the show and have listened to every episode which has only left me jonesing for more! My absolutely favorite is Aubrey's "oh buddy!" I would love an episode on marijuana: the legalization, the stigma, the public opinion etc and how it has changed in recent years. I'm always so frustrated that it gets lumped in with hard drugs when it can be so beneficial for people with chronic pain and is SO much less harmful than alcohol, which is ubiquitous in society. Thanks!

2021-10-16 04:09:07 +0000 UTCThank you Aubrey and Mike for this podcast! You have helped me take an in-depth look at the messaging I've received on weight loss. I'm an older Gen Xer (refuse to accept "Boomer") and have been on and off diets my entire adult life. Two things that keep coming up for me is the whole "you need to drink water" messaging and how we got into bottled water being a thing. The other is the awful phrase "nothing tastes as good as being thin feels". I remember that being said over and over in WW and other diet advice. I love listening and learning from you both.

2021-10-15 16:28:05 +0000 UTCSeconding the recommendation about weight loss surgeries. As a fat person, I've had multiple primary care doctors at Kaiser bring this up with me. I always shut it down hard. I've known several people who'd had stomach surgery. All of them were miserable because of the food restrictions. All of them gained most of the weight back over time. Most of them experienced additional health complications, and one died, yet doctors keep pushing this on people. It's horrible.

Suggested guest: Dr Sabrina Strings (or just a deep dive any of the chapters in Fearing the Black Body: the Racial Origins of fat phobia- like, there is a chapter on thinness as American exceptionalism!). 3. The macrobiotic diet 4. John Harvey Kellogg! What a wacko! Love your work so much. 💜 (I’m trying to be more funny and less angry after bingeing all your episodes. Y’all are great).

2021-10-01 00:06:11 +0000 UTCHope this hasn't been suggested already, but I'd love to hear an episode on Isagenix. When I was a kid, our whole family was briefly on Isagenix detox protocols (I can still taste the weirdly thick-tasting berry collagen water to this day). My mom transitioned pretty easily from the Isagenix regimen into full blown anorexia, which ended up being a years long recovery process. I thought that was the last I'd see of Isagenix, but recently I learned that it's still alive and well, and several people in my circle of friends are actually active participants *shock horror dismay*. Poking around their website, it looks like they've changed their messaging and marketing to be a "lifestyle" brand, not a diet brand. I'd love to get a deep dive on this particular corner of the cult-y diet world.

2021-09-21 13:48:24 +0000 UTCI'm gonna beg you to do a episode on Nutrisystem, please?! I send episodes to friends as a way to nudge them to become aware of their own anti fat bias. One of my friends is currently doing this diet. She comes from a family with both male and female members who struggle with disordered eating in a context of fatphobia. Your concise analysis is better than any research I could do. Best of all your humor is the gateway to see how ridiculous these diets are! Keep up the amazing work!

Since you get the prescription and are supervised at MedSpa type facilities—as opposed to, you know, by clinicians who care about health—I also have a wild theory that some women are using the injections as cheaper alternative to actual fertility treatments.

2021-08-19 13:24:01 +0000 UTCWhile eagerly awaiting Tuesday's episode, I was wondering if you'd heard about something called the "Hair metabolic system", and if it's worth an episode or a bonus ep. I was sorting through my paperwork and came across my "results and recommendations". It wasn't sold to me as a diet for weight loss, just as eating the "recommended" foods and avoiding the "non recommended" ones, in recommended proportions for my metabolic type. Today me sees the restriction red flags, and also questions the scientific validity of the mineralogical analysis of my hair. 🤔

2021-08-13 19:50:47 +0000 UTCYes, I tried fit for life the title sold me. It worked while I could do the diet. It was hard to maintain. I don’t think the combining was as important as the author made it seem. Basically your eating fruits, vegetables, protein and some carbs. So yeah, if you eat healthy you’ll be fit for life, but eat a sandwich or a panini and you’ll be fat.
Alicia Flannery
2021-08-12 19:50:50 +0000 UTCI didn’t remember this one in time for the Fad Diets episode: Fit for Life. Does anyone know about that one? The central idea is that the combination of food is important: never mix carbs and meat, and only eat fruit on its own, for various “scientific” reasons. It was big in the 80’s, I think, and then Suzanne Somers came along in the early 2000’s and repackaged it in her own diet book. Would love to hear more about it!

2021-08-07 03:52:20 +0000 UTCA post from the fatdoctoruk on Instagram made me think about this- alcohol is incredibly unhealthy yet socially so acceptable. Smoking is no longer in the same boat but was for a long time. How is the narrative around booze so nonchalant and the focus on health/ weight so strong. How did we get here and who has lobbied so hard for this.

2021-08-06 22:53:00 +0000 UTCWould be curious to hear your thoughts on shows like 1000 lb sisters/my 600 lb life. Feels wrong for so many reasons but in 1000 lb sisters they really push the narrative of losing weight for “Heath reasons” — which you are lead to believe is justifiable as one sister can no longer walk and needs an oxygen tank. Maybe I’m approaching this wrong and the show is undeniably fucked up for explicit anti fat bias and making fat people seem categorically lazy, stupid, etc but curious about your thoughts on the show and the shows premise around health.

2021-07-27 15:44:22 +0000 UTCDr Michael Mosley, the man who made intermittent fasting (via a documentary on the BBC no less!) first into the 5:2 diet, then the 800 kcal a day diet, making it a *huge* thing in the UK. He wrote the method books; made his wife (co)author of all the branded 5:2/800kcal cookbooks (not that you’d notice, because the other author only gets a credit inside). Despite the fact he constantly gets credited as a GP, he hasn’t actually practiced medicine for decades.

2021-07-21 19:08:02 +0000 UTCThank you so much for making this podcast! I just started listening and I have been binging all of your episodes! I have SO many ideas that would make for good episodes, which include: (1) protein-dense products and products marketed for building muscle mass (think: bro-centric products that are hyper-masculine), (2) cross-fit, orange theory, peloton and other culty exercise groups, (3) Dr. Phil (I'm LOVING all of your Oprah deep dives!), and (4) organic and "all-natural" food products and the nutrition/environmental science implications,. I could go on and on with ideas, but no matter what, I am thankful for all of your work and happy to keep listening!

2021-07-17 16:29:58 +0000 UTCRESEARCH AND METHODOLOGY!!!! I would be interested in hearing you talk about your methods for validating research, your relationship to data, identifying misinformation, etc. Basically a behind-the-scenes of researching an episode. I've been having a lot of medical journalism/misinformation related conversations with my mom and people her age, but I'm finding it difficult to identify what is and isn't real based on anything other than "this guy looks like a hack", and citing papers from 2006 that can just be readily accessed by PDF feels... bad. At the same time, the idea that, for example, Verizon would NOT be perpetuating active harm seems.... well, naiive. And willfully ignorant. Would love to hear about note-taking, verifying good data and science, deciding what is in a "middling" area of fact (Like when y'all say something like, "There seems to be SOME evidence...."), and how y'all come to conclusions based on all that.

2021-07-08 20:38:46 +0000 UTCI’m not sure if this was specific to the ED world or if this trend became a “regular” fad diet at any point but I remember like maybe 5 years ago so called mono diets were a big deal in online ED communities, where you would only eat one specific food and I think somehow this was supposed to make your body get used to processing that food more easily and therefor, weight loss? I believe there was some pseudo science explanation to it but the reality was that eating only one type of food (usually a low cal item) was already going to limit the number of calories one could possibly consume in a day without eating an absolutely absurd number of something. The most popular one was bananas, mostly made famous by Frelee the banana girl on YouTube but eggs were also pretty common. I tried my hand at this fad diet first with bananas but became nauseated by the taste after maybe one day. Tried again with eggs and the constipation after like three days was so incredibly painful lol

2021-07-06 16:55:26 +0000 UTCThe keto episode (awesome) got me thinking -- it would be cool to have an episode that explores the physical health cost of all these diets, with a focus on inter-generational dieting and dieting often beginning in childhood or adolescence. Part of my ED recovery was making peace with the fact that my recovered weight is probably higher than it would've been if I hadn't restricted for so long. Now I wonder... is the "o* epidemic" an own-goal, where by dieting to avoid being fat we're making our bodies fatter? Not that there's anything wrong with fatter bodies 😁 (side note: I really want an emoji for "happy fat woman is happy")

2021-06-29 20:29:00 +0000 UTCI love the podcast! I’d be really curious to hear an episode on Overeaters Anonymous and/or the idea of “food addiction.” I know people in recovery from drug or alcohol addiction who’ve been sober for decades and credit Alcoholics Anonymous with helping them turn their lives around. I don’t know how the “don’t drink/use” tenet gets translated to food, but I’m guessing it’s not good! In my experience, trying to restrict or abstain from particular foods only makes binge eating worse, plus the potential for fatphobia seems off the charts.

I found this podcast because I love the master cleanse and was looking for a podcast on it. And from there I was hooked. Always waiting for the next installment. I hope you guys do more than twice a month! Love, Alix

2021-06-26 16:16:19 +0000 UTCDid the ‘poo doctor’ Gillian McKeith ever make it to the US? She was a top of the class charlatan here in the UK for a disturbing number of years, even having a successful tv show.

2021-06-26 07:07:45 +0000 UTCWhat chiropractors in the US get up to amazed me. Here in the UK they’re really heavily regulated and can’t make any of the health claims or perform alternative treatments that aren’t licensed by their board.

2021-06-24 20:05:40 +0000 UTCVeganism for the health of the planet is hard to argue, but I think one of the main issues is asking people on a fixed income that already have chronic health issues that have been exacerbated by being food insecure to spend more of their money on alternative proteins that are not widely available at a realistic cost. And can we please get some better options for vegan cheese!

2021-06-23 18:03:10 +0000 UTCI know it’s a bit further from your general weight and wellness discussions, but I’d love to hear you guys discuss alcohol. The times you’ve mentioned how conflicting advice gets presented in the media about diet always makes me think about alcohol studies too. Not sure if that would be more of a bonus topic or topic topic!

2021-06-23 07:54:08 +0000 UTCHi, and thank you for your work. I wanted to suggest Chiropractic as an episode topic. I recently learned it was created by a magnetic healer who claimed he reinstated the ability to hear to a deaf janitor. I think there may be a twist in the end that it actually works in some. Though as we know, there’s a power in the placebo effect and you may spend upwards of thousands of dollars to be healed by your own innate power. Side effects may include stroke and death.

2021-06-23 03:04:45 +0000 UTCjust got hooked on your podcast, absolutely love love love it. had a close friend who was a case and point of the wellness to q anon pipeline, and it was really validating listening to that episode. would love an episode debunking narratives around 'toxins' because its such a broad word that i think it draws a lot of people into scams and random fads who don't really understand the connotations of that word. would love to hear your takes on the use of that word!

2021-06-22 07:54:49 +0000 UTCNo suggestions, but I love this podcast. As a fat person still struggling to unlearn behaviors/thoughts from a very long lasting ED, I've found this to be one of the most helpful tools in rethinking a lot of the toxic stuff I was taught.

2021-06-21 12:15:28 +0000 UTCI loved hearing Aubrey's conversation with Julia Turshen on her podcast, and her raving about Turshen's cookbooks got me curious about what other food or nutrition resources you both DO recommend. 2021-06-15 23:36:06 +0000 UTCHi, first up I love this podcast - you guys have such fun witty chemistry, and the content is really interesting (and heartbreaking and enraging). It’s really having an impact on my very complicated feelings about my father and his weight; and my mum and her life long obsession with weight loss (as Virginia Sole Smith says, the boomers are not ok). Anyway I’m sure these have been recc’d, but I’m super interested in your thoughts on Noom, and intermittent fasting. Also you’ve mentioned that the link between being overweight and various health risks is over simplified; but I still struggle with sorting out complicated feelings about health and weight. Bleurghh god I don’t know what even to think anymore - I still have a lot of years of guilt and weirdness about weight to work through.

2021-06-04 13:24:23 +0000 UTCNoom is terrible. Don't do it. They actually use the metaphor of not listening to the elephant inside of you. They use cutesy and very stupid games and cartoons and phrases to mask the fatphobia.

2021-06-01 22:27:01 +0000 UTCI would love an episode looking at the food/health/diet culture for Seventh Day Adventists -- I'll admit I'm not too knowledgeable on it myself, but my dad is ex-SDA and my mom has always ranted about the weird SDA food culture she saw in his family. There's even an Oprah tie-in -- I believe she did on episode about them at one point, and when I googled it, I found an article mentioning them on Oprah's website written by Dr. Oz! https://www.oprah.com/health/the-secrets-of-the-blue-zones/9 If it's not enough for its own episode, it could be interesting to include in a broader religion and food episode too, which I've seen a few other comments suggest!

2021-05-30 23:24:59 +0000 UTCI’d love another podcast on vintage diet books! One of my favorites is the 1955 Better Homes & Gardens Diet Book, in which they recommend asking your doctor for the “quite popular drug” amphetamine. It also has a lot of horrible alliterative chapter sub headers, such as “the high cost of corpulence” and “it hurts to be hefty.”

For bonus content, maybe an episode about toxic TikTok beauty trends (like self-comparison challenges, or challenges designed to make users feel bad about their appearances, like the face flipping camera trick) and/or how misinformation is spread on TikTok? I’ve heard multiple people cite a TikTok video on how the COVID vaccine apparently makes people magnetic if they get it, and that’s why they refuse to get it 🙄 anyway, whatever y’all do, I’m here for it! 😊💞

2021-05-27 03:47:38 +0000 UTCPlease, please, please do an episode on all these “nutrition shops” that are popping up EVERYWHERE that are really just a front for Huns shilling Herbalife. (My proudest moment this week was making some girl do a dirty delete on our town FB page after she was promoting her mom’s new “Nutrition Shop” that was just Herbalife. An episode on Intermittent Fasting- my work bestie has jumped on the trend and swears that it has changed his life. He started listening to this YouTube “doctor” who also insists that fat people don’t live as long because their bodies have to work harder to digest their food than thin people. It’s such a struggle because he’s not a moron, despite how much he sounds like one sometimes. Keto and Arbonne’s “Thirty Days to Healthy, anytime I can listen to someone trash Oprah or Jillian Michaels is a great day in my book, and the essential oils industry (which is downright dangerous)are all episodes that I would love to repeatedly share on social media.

2021-05-27 00:21:01 +0000 UTCI LOVE your podcast and my pet peeve is actually a perfect fit for an episode. my super duper pet peeve is what I call the "hydration cult" - the super ubiquitous idea that you need to drink x amount of water per day, and it will help you with any number of ailments (if one more person tells me to drink water when i have a headache so help me), and help you lose weight etc. The idea that if your pee isn't clear you are going to die of dehydration etc. turns out you have a handy dandy set of hydration sensors called "kidneys" and "brain" and they let you know when you need a drink by making you thirsty. even the "you need 8 cups a day" thing came from a single study that of course didn't explicitly say that at all. it's just so frustrating to me that this is such an embedded idea that people think if they don't need to pee every 20 mins they are being unhealthy. and people think I'm crazy when i talk about it, haha.
Alicia Penney
2021-05-27 00:15:43 +0000 UTCi recently looked up information on how to get my cat to a healthy weight and it was so gross the way it is written about! definitely reeked of human anti-fat bias.

2021-05-27 00:08:13 +0000 UTCDammit, I hit the wrong button. Anyway, I frequently hear a lot of pet owners and vets talk about the dangers of being overweight re an animal’s health, which sounds pretty similar to people sharing their “concern” about my health with me due to my being fat. 2021-05-26 14:11:08 +0000 UTCAnother vote for an episode/bonus on weight and pregnancy- it’s deeply fucked up how scared we make women of gaining too much weight when not gaining ENOUGH is actually associated with vastly worse outcomes for both mom and baby. Personal experience- I had serious complications that prevented me from gaining enough weight during my first pregnancy, my son was born early and dangerously small, and anxiety destroyed my appetite such that by the time he got home from NICU I was below pre-pregnancy weight and my body felt completely out of control, and I STILL had people who KNEW about the health problems congratulate me on “getting my body back so quickly.” So. Fucked. Up.

2021-05-26 13:43:43 +0000 UTCan episode on how Jenny Craig diets came around and work would be fascinating too! I have a cousin who actually put herself in thousands of dollars of debt to do that diet TWICE and yet now she’s heavier than ever going into her 40s. But when she was on it it got to the point where she got skinny enough that she was happy yet JC told her if she lost 20 more pounds they’d offer her advertisement opportunities (she didn’t take it, but that always blew my mind considering how good she looked for her size at the time of the offer). That company is so shady there’s gotta be some documentation on how the food works and the cooperate dark side
Sarah McLean
2021-05-26 05:35:07 +0000 UTCI don’t think this has much to do with body size or weight loss, but it’s definitely out there on the fringes of the wellness world— how about an episode on urine therapy? You know, since Mike hates talking about poo so much, maybe this’ll be easier for him. But since your pee is free, maybe no one is making money off of this... yet...

2021-05-25 23:31:05 +0000 UTCGreat idea! This could also include a historical angle - Spartans as a people considered diet, exercise, and strength to be indicative of quality of character (which is broadly true of Greek culture, but the Spartans to a neurotic extent)

2021-05-25 23:23:15 +0000 UTCThis is a great idea! Lindi West talks about intentionally looking at big bodies in sensual and sexy poses/clothes in her book Shrill. If im remembering correctly, she makes the same point about media presentation being largely responsible for our unreflective statements like "big bodies are objectively less attractive". There are also great IG accts sharing sexy fat folks being sexy - it's a glorious exercise in re-learning what's beautiful. Would love an episode on this topic!

2021-05-25 21:14:11 +0000 UTCPlease, please, please take on Whole30 and/or paleo and/or keto! I would especially love to hear the Audrey & Michael take on how the first X number of days on the diet you feel like shit, experience malaise, feel irritable with everyone around you, etc. because it is "working." And all of the weird rules like no legumes! What does a diet have against beans, I ask you!? I'd love a bonus episode delving into the requirements that people lose weight before a surgery - like gender-affirming surgeries, hip replacements, etc. Is there any merit to this? I have such skepticism that encouraging people to crash diet before a major surgery is in any way a good idea that will support health and wellbeing and good surgical outcomes.
Lauren D.
2021-05-25 21:12:47 +0000 UTCHi and thank you for my absolute favorite podcast! A thing that probably isn’t specific enough for an episode theme but that has always fascinated me is the way certain foods get labeled as healthy or unhealthy based not-so-much on their actual nutritional value but on their exclusivity and potential for distinction (sorry, sociologist who read too much Bourdieu here). The best example of this that I personally encountered was in the forums of a fitness app, where people (mostly girls in high school/college) were discussing the evils of potatoes and sharing tips on how to avoid the potatoes their well-meaning parents and grandparents were trying to feed them. Potatoes are super nutritious and much lower in calories than, say, brown rice, quinoa or oatmeal, all of which were endorsed by the same crowd. I know you’ve touched on this in several episodes, especially when talking about the kinds of foods that get hyped (just started listening to the celery juice episode), so maybe all I really wanted to say is that I love your podcast (so much!) and I’m so happy I finally found two people who have the conversations about food and society out loud that I’ve been having in my head for these last ten years!

Also, this may be more of a regular episode thing, but I was recently reminded of that time in the 2000s when there was that whole "Spartan" adjacent fitness craze. Remember when there were things labeled as "spartan workouts" and all the "spartan races' where people ran through a bunch of mud and stuff started? I feel like it was sort of a pre-cursor to cross-fit and throwing stuff around in a black room. It was all very weird and I wish I remembered how the heck it started.

2021-05-25 19:31:40 +0000 UTCI would be really interested in an episode about the McDonalds obesity lawsuits from the early 2000's. I vaguely remember McDonalds being sued for contributing to obesity but I don't remember what ever happened in the end.

2021-05-25 18:56:56 +0000 UTCI would love an episode (or a series! But I would settle for an episode ;) ) On the intersection between religion and wellness/eating. Not necessarily Christianity and wellness, could be any religion. I would love to hear about positive/negative effects, what are religious eating practices that have turn out to be really beneficial/not beneficial over time, what about cultural appropriation, how is all of this shifting... And why do people often fixate on food and weight in relation to spirituality? Some relation to self and control, a way to be holy/pure/good, something else? I'm deconstructing what I believe atm, questioning everything, and it's something that I've seen echo through my faith--how food, diet, and wellness were presented as yet another aspect that needed to be controlled and regulated rather than just... Food!

2021-05-25 15:36:22 +0000 UTCI love the episodes on individual diets or diet books. Some more ideas: Slim-Fast, Suzanne Somers "food combining" diet, Special K diet, Shangri-La diet (this one's a bizarro book!), and the alkalizing diet. (Sadly, after I began listening to your podcast, I started a list of the diets I've been on in my life--not number of the *times* I've been on a diet, just the number of different diets I've tried--and stopped at 20. For context, I consider myself an average American woman in her 40s who's never had a diagnosable eating disorder.)

2021-05-25 10:58:36 +0000 UTCGREAT idea! I have a dear friend who had this surgery and yeah, it was 100% ridiculous, the hoops she had to jump through to get to it.

2021-05-24 17:23:18 +0000 UTCOk, so first real quick, I am so excited to be Patreon-ing for my first time! Yay! For episode ideas, I'd love a historical retrospective on body size and cultural attitudes and how they've evolved. From what I understand (and I could toooootally be wrong, hence the idea) it used to be that size at one point was synonymous with wealth so being bigger was a positive thing. And then there were periods where size was celebrated in art, like the Rubenesque era, but really how big of a thing was that for that time? And how have our ideas of what fat even IS - how it is measured and defined - changed and evolved? A sort-of fat historical retrospective, if you will. Thank you for doing the show, I love it!
Carrie J Sullivan
2021-05-24 17:21:38 +0000 UTCOMG! You just reminded me of a podcast where they skimmed over this policy at Oral Roberts University and how they would "encourage" students to lose weight before they could graduate. I looked it up and it was a total thing. Yes to a deep dive on this topic! Thank you, Laura, for suggesting it!
Simka
2021-05-24 13:12:01 +0000 UTCOuttakes/“deleted scenes” (assuming there are recorded conversations that didn’t make the final cut? 👀🤞) would be cool! And seeing “behind the scenes” pictures of filming areas or processes and stuff, like Michael’s face when he’s forced to talk about “ba-mus” (I had to pause and almost died laughing when he deadpanned “I fucking hate this” after he said “evacuatory diarrhea” in the Olestra episode)

2021-05-17 01:57:19 +0000 UTCHi! I LOVE your podcast, it is my favorite and I keep forcefully messaging my friends with episode links. I would really enjoy a dive into the wellness "trends" in the West that have been co-opted and commercialized from Eastern cultures. (Yoga, acupuncture, chi, etc.). And then also with the rumors surrounding the origins of Covid and the flip side of it resulting in stigma. Especially with all of the violence against AAPI folks in the U.S. Thank you for your consideration!

2021-05-11 08:15:33 +0000 UTCI joined the Patreon specifically to ask if you plan to do an episode on bariatric surgery. I had a gastric bypass in 2007 and a) I'm still fat, b) an episode of Oprah I watched in like 1988 had a huge influence on me, and c) the ridiculous hurdles you have to jump just to get surgery are worth talking about. Just as an example, I was required to take phentermine (half of Fen-Phen) and engage in other shifty weight loss practices to prove they didn't work before I could be approved for surgery. Anyway, it's a rich topic.

2021-04-30 17:27:12 +0000 UTCI can't even express how much I love your podcast. It is changing my brain and my life - like Moon Juice! :D I would love to hear you guys talk about the "Trim/Healthy/Hot mom" phenomenon, like the books by Barrett and Allison. I love (Ie I do NOT love) how mothers are evidently responsible for EVERYTHING. And if you're a failure in your hotness, you're a failure to your family and your children will suffer the consequences for years. I'm assuming. You both bring me so much knowledge and joy - thank you!

2021-04-29 19:09:18 +0000 UTCI found this podcast from the Dr Oz one shared on "You're Wrong About" and even though it isn't a topic I would have neccessarily sought out I have found it so entertaining and informative! It has made me think a bit more about my own biases as well. Thank you! As far as thoughts for current episodes/ bonus content: Adkins would be an interesting one as would your thought on those TLC shows that focus on obesity like 600 lbs life etc (or that Ruby show from awhile back? I think I read an article somewhere about her and how she faired after the show)

2021-04-29 03:05:50 +0000 UTCAdding to the workplace discussion - would love to hear about companies that incentivise weight loss and is this actually legal? 2021-04-26 18:37:57 +0000 UTCI’m loving your podcast! Thank you for calling out Oprah as a shareholder of WW - it’s disappointing that she makes money off of “failed” dieting attempts. 2021-04-26 00:05:35 +0000 UTCI would love a miniature series on the factors that upend Calories-In-Calories-Out. Like the role of the gut biome. I was fascinated by a story of a woman who people would say had a very "healthy" weight. She got sick and needed a fecal matter transplant and got it from a sample from her obese daughter. Within a year, the mom became obese herself without changing her diet and exercise habits. People hear "calories in, calories out" all of the time and I think it makes people think weight loss is that simple and anyone who gains and doesn't lose weight is just lazy or lacks will power. But hardly anyone ever hears specifically why it isn't as simple as CICO. There are other factors, and even I don't know them well. Hormones, insulin response, genetics, yada yada yada. I'd love to learn more.
Susan Mottet
2021-04-25 19:38:04 +0000 UTCWhat would be interesting is discussion of doctors requiring weight loss before donor insemination. I’ve been a “choice mom” for 17 years, mid fat then and now, and I’m hearing more and more how doctors won’t do the “procedure” until weight loss because of the perceived risks during pregnancy. And in my experience many, but by no means all, choice moms are fat. So fat women who want kids are thwarted at every turn—picked last in the marriage/dating pool, and are blocked in choosing to become parents on their own.

2021-04-19 19:21:57 +0000 UTCI would love to see an episode about obesity and joint replacement surgery and foot care (weird, I know). My mom needed knee replacement surgery on which I partially blame a lifetime of riding and training horses, but she was told she couldn't get it until she lost 50 lbs, a fifth of her bodyweight. You know what makes losing weight hard, having to steel yourself everytime you walk. I have plantar fasciitis, and constantly get told to just lose weight and it will go away. Again, it's really fucking hard to lose weight when you have to get you mind in the right place to walk.

2021-04-12 20:08:12 +0000 UTCI just joined this patreon, so I apologize if this has already been mentioned (there were too many comments to read through).... I would love an episode about racism and fat bias with Sabrina Strings as a guest. 2021-04-12 19:50:36 +0000 UTCI would love an ep on the effects of fad diets and diet tv on kids! I grew up w a mom on Jenny Craig or similar programs for years, we would watch biggest loser and this EVIL show called “Honey we’re killing the kids” during dinner, and it caused me to feel so much shame about my body. 2021-04-06 21:37:27 +0000 UTCI'd love to hear more about body positivity...and the pitfalls. 2021-04-05 23:44:23 +0000 UTCI would love to hear your take on the keto diet! I actually did it for 3 weeks because it can have mood stabilizing benefits and while it did seem to “help,” I was...just so ill. And craving fruit like there was no tomorrow. 2021-04-03 23:22:23 +0000 UTCRaw food fads are pretty ridiculous, and some of the pseduo-celebs/influencers are highly entertaining. There are many fun rabbit holes, like those who claim that this diet made their eyes change color!

2021-04-02 18:49:35 +0000 UTCI have a couple other thoughts/maybe suggestions? First is the fetishization of fat bodies and fat sex workers experiences. In my past experiences I feel like the major selling point was my "different" (than mainstream porn) body type. It can really get to a person. The other is maybe less viable and possibly just me needing to vent but I work in a salon now and I cannot go a single day without diet talk. Every single day I have to listen to people talk about how ashamed they are of their bodies and all the crazy things they're trying to change it. I just overheard a conversation about making a cheesecake that's little to no carbs or something? He used xylitol instead of sugar and claims it was delicious but all I could think was that sounds like a lot of diarrhea.

2021-04-02 16:16:03 +0000 UTCThis is likely not enough for a whole episode but I just need to tell someone this. 2021-04-01 11:10:14 +0000 UTCLove this podcast! It's been really helpful for my pandemic-coping and my eating disorder/fatphobia recovery (using "fatphobia" intentionally there). Topic suggestion: I think we don't talk enough about how our actual sexual attraction to different people is shaped by the media. We think of it as this inherent thing... "oh, it's not that I don't like fat people, I'm just not _sexually attracted to them_"... when really there are so many socialized aspects of attraction. E.g., I think there was a fun genital-electrode-based study (when are those not fun) that showed that people who are exposed to images of fat people for a period of time show more attraction to those people. Maybe. I dunno.

2021-03-31 00:27:31 +0000 UTCHearing your views on pre-partum and post-partum bodies would be fascinating. The pre-partum period is kind of the only societally sanctioned time a woman can gain weight, as long as they don't gain too much (see the media's treatment of Kim Kardashian and others, as well as the chapter on weight gain from Expecting Better). During the post-partum period we are told to "bounce back" and expect to shed pounds immediately to return to our original bodies (or better) despite the wierdness of recovering from childbirth, complications, abdominal separation, not sleeping, caring for a newborn, etc. One of the big inducements women are given to breastfeed is how much weight they will loose (not actually true.) It would be amazing to get your take!

2021-03-24 15:05:24 +0000 UTCI am a first time listener. I just listened to Anti-Fat Bias and the conversation about planes is the reason why I’ve never been on a plane and it gives me so much anxiety. I would love to travel, but I’m anxious to do so. Thank you for the conversation. I’d really love to hear an episode about weight loss surgery. I actually had gastric bypass in 2019 and no one ever discusses how you are treated after weight loss, especially with wls. Also, the side effects of wls are never discussed and the team at the hospital where I had the surgery said they don’t mention the side effects because it would deter people from getting the surgery.

2021-03-23 14:56:54 +0000 UTCI'm sure this has been suggested already but I'd love to hear an episode about the vitamin/supplement subscription fad that's been popping up the last few years (Care Of, Ritual, etc.) While some people, myself included, require vitamins to handle deficiencies (vitamin D, calcium, et al.) or supplements (probiotics when taking antibiotics) it's hard to know which brands to trust due to the lack of oversight/regulation in the industry. Do these new "wellness" brands actually offer a quality product and service, or are they just marking up mediocre products in cute packaging?

2021-03-18 23:55:15 +0000 UTCI always love a mailbag/FAQ episode, if you wanted to do one of those! I'm also curious to know more about how you navigate fatphobic interactions with people you love (as opposed to strangers/random Internet assholes). Like, if your friends or family bring up your weight/diet/whatever because they're concerned for your health, or conversely, if a friend or loved one announces that they need to lose weight or makes fatphobic comments about themselves. I would love to hear any scripts, suggestions, tools, etc. for navigating these situations. Also just wanted to say that I really love the podcast (I started as a YWA listener, but I've also been following Aubrey on Twitter for a while) and I'm so happy you're doing it! (Also I just got Aubrey's book from the library, looking forward to getting started)! Keep up the great work!

2021-03-18 15:23:22 +0000 UTCI have an episode suggestion that I would love to see you take on: why do fat women celebrities often lose weight once they're famous? Lizzo said on Instagram in November 2020 that she’d lost 50 pounds through working out and dieting. She looked like she had lost more weight at the Grammy’s on Monday. Virtually every time fat women get a role model in the form of an actress or a singer, the celebrity encounters fame and fortune and then magically drops the weight. Adele, Rebel Wilson, and Melissa McCarthy are a few recent options. Jennifer Hudson, America Ferrara, Missy Elliott, Monique, and Star Jones are more distant examples.

2021-03-18 11:45:10 +0000 UTCI would love to see Mike and Aubrey take on AA, and especially OA (Overeaters Anonymous-- so creepy). There's a great book called "Quit Like a Woman," written by Holly Whitaker, who also wrote a great New York Times piece about how problematic AA is.

2021-03-18 04:10:23 +0000 UTCI agree, but also, check out The Dream. They did two seasons, one on MLMs and one on the supplement industry. Absolutely infuriating and frightening by turns. Made me vow to never give one red cent to any MLM no matter what.

2021-03-18 00:27:33 +0000 UTCI know this might be too controversial, and it's maybe orthogonal to what you focus on, but I'd love to see you tackle the 12-step program. It's got all kinds of parallels to a lot of what you've talked about (weird Christian connections, hegemony rather than efficacy, no real science behind it, etc.). I did a Twitter thread on it a while back with a bunch of links to info on its origins, some studies about its efficacy, and so on, in case you're interested and might find the links useful: https://twitter.com/Delafina777/status/960706969894977537

2021-03-17 12:51:26 +0000 UTCTW: Poop (Sorry Mike!) I'm here drinking my coffee with a bit of stevia in it and thinking about artificial sweeteners. The story I am most curious about is Lily's chocolate. If you google "Lily's chocolate diarrhea" you will find literally thousands of people over the past decade wondering why this perfectly nice, gourmet-looking, gourmet-priced, "stevia-sweetened" chocolate bar is making their bowels erupt. There is no indication that this stuff is, shall we say, "cleansing," other than the very small, fine print on the back of the package saying that the ingredients are "unsweetened cocoa, erythritol, inulin..." Wait did you say "erythritol and inulin"? It is amazing to me that these are included in "food" in the US without any kind of warning. I want to know how that happens. I mean, I don't normally have a very sensitive stomach but I am telling you, eating 1/4 of this bar of Lily's was like colonoscopy prep. Very surprising. I don't normally buy things with non-sugar sweeteners, but this is really cruel, especially to diabetics or dieters who might think the chocolate is useful. It's especially bad that diabetics often have crummy vision, and I with pretty good 50-year-old eyes can barely read the 6-point compressed fine type on the ingredient list. I know you're already looking into the disaster known as Olestra, but at least the food lobby did its work on Olestra and got warning labels onto the Pringles. These chocolates have been subject to complaints for literally 10 years and somehow the sugar lobby hasn't managed to get the FDA to warn consumers. Why do we even prop up the sugar industry if they're not going to help us defeat gas pains? tl;dr: Artificial sweeteners, esp. the ones with unpleasant digestive effects and no warning labels

2021-03-17 01:44:18 +0000 UTCI love the podcast. I've been meaning to join Patreon for a while so I could support some of my favorite shows, so kudos to you for being the ones who reminded me to click. I don't know what most creators do for Patreon content. I joined to support y'all more than anything. One show I love allows supporters to submit questions to their guests, which is fun. I really love the idea of podcasts being free and I know not everyone can afford to give. You've already hit on some of the things I grew up with like Snackwells and cleanses (my mom called those "fasts" in the 80s and 90s, but she was trying to cleanse toxins from her body because she thought it would cure her psoriasis/eczema. There was just a religious element also.) Here's some other ideas: The autoimmune protocol diet (AIP) - not the anti inflammatory diet, which seems to just be low fat and eat vegetables. The AIP has a weird hate for "nightshade" vegetables, and other than that seems to be a severe form of Paleo. Lots of people with RA and lupus and Sjogrens insist that you MUST follow this diet. Also people with narcolepsy are convinced that keto helps with their condition which seems suspect to me. Intermittent fasting. I have friends who think it cures MS and diabetes and all kinds of things. Is there anything to this weirdness (not curing MS, necessarily, but is it good for you at all?) The silliness about eating based on your blood type. Listening to the Master Cleanse episode, it occurred to me that it seems like there's a fundamental layer of thought that our bodies are dirty and gross and we need to clean or purify or punish them. Which might make learning healthier habits and lifestyles hard if we never tackle that underlying attitude. Any thoughts on how we do that? Intuitive eating: been hearing good things about this philosophy. Any thoughts?

2021-03-16 23:37:56 +0000 UTCI have been so curious what their deal is because I see so many ads for it. I know it's got to be some kind of BS but I really want to know what!

2021-03-16 23:31:24 +0000 UTCI am so, so glad this podcast exists! I have followed YR Fat Friend for years and so glad Aubrey is out and making great content with another great creator! I admit, I am poor so I can only really afford to do this bottom level of patreon, so the ideas I have are more for maybe higher-level people: * Bonus episodes * Aubrey reviews/photos of vintage diet books * Special Patreons merch In terms of topics.... * BMI * MTV's "Fat Camp" docu-series from the 2000's * Flat tummy tea/influencers and weight loss * Nutrisystem, Slim Fast, other ones like Weight Watchers

2021-03-16 18:36:23 +0000 UTCI really think that the topic of wellness/weight loss-based MLMs would be interesting, as there are so many out there, and so many that don't work, can cause bodily harm, and can cause financial harm. Where I live, someone started a "smoothie shop" to essentially sell Herbalife products, and from what I've learned this isn't an uncommon thing. I think you could do a whole episode just on Goop. They often give ridiculous advice, and sell ridiculous things in the name of wellness. I know a little bit has been touched on, but I think you could really do a deep dive. Also, if I remember correctly, Aubrey collects strange diet books, and I think checking out some of them might be fun as well!

2021-03-12 20:54:00 +0000 UTCLove the podcast and happy to support without any bonus material. As far as topics, I would be interested in BMI as a topic. I recently found out that as far as my state's COVID vaccine requirements go, I am considered "extremely obese" by their BMI criteria. I will certainly get the vaccine once it is offered to folks in my BMI range, but have never considered myself "extremely obese" and it has had me thinking more about the idea of BMI. Thanks to you both for putting together an awesome podcast!

2021-03-12 04:19:00 +0000 UTCI was thinking it would be cool to do a version of "my day on a plate" using an assortment of regular everyday people (anonymously - so not tied in with anyone's looks/weight) and have them talk about why eating like that on that speicfic day worked for them. For example, I thought it was cool to hear from Aubrey about how her diabetic friend eats some sort of heat up dinner (can't remember the brand name - I am not from America so am not familiar) and how that worked for her. Similarly, it would be cool to hear from say someone who is a single mum with very picky kids who feeds them some completely random food that her kids have decided are the only type of food they will eat (when I was growing up all I was so picky all I ate was plain pasta, carrot and playdough) It could be fun to take a more lighthearted approach so that the people doing their "day on a plate" can feel comfortable to poke fun at some of their eating choices that day. Essentially, I would just like to have a different representation of how regular people in the real world eat without that being"idealised" in the same way celebrities' "day on a plate" would be. Love the podcast btw!!

2021-03-11 04:38:25 +0000 UTCHonestly, I would pay $4/month for these podcasts, for nothing extra. This is just my way of helping make this viable. Keep up the amazing work.

2021-03-10 20:36:20 +0000 UTCVery very much this, but if we could also just get at least one moment in each where Aubrey gives us a faux-outraged “Miiiike!” I will be thrilled. This is the best things I’ve found in 2021!
Emily Smith
2021-03-10 07:58:38 +0000 UTCI think bonus content should be breezy and easier for you all to produce. As such, I vote for meandering conversations with people you think are rad about things like how their relationship with their own body has evolved over time. Just a thought. Love the show. Thank you so much for all you do.

2021-03-09 21:49:54 +0000 UTCI've started to see ads on youtube where they start something like "did you know that the average american has 12-20 pounds of toxic poop rotting in their body" and then I skip the rest of the ad, but I can only assume it's probably for some kind of laxitive. If you want to make Mike uncomfortable, you could talk about poop in american diet culture

2021-03-05 08:04:28 +0000 UTCI adore this podcast! The topics I can think of right now that I'd like to see would be those stupid influencer peddled weight loss products and in a similar vein pretty much any weight loss centered MLM (examples, Herbalife, Juice +, Beachbody, Itworks). I know Optavia is in the works, theres just so many weight loss MLMs its dizzying and gross. I also think an episode about the evolution and reworking of what I grew up with as "the food pyramid" would be interesting. Its such a weird shit show. Can't stress enough how much I love the podcast and how thankful I am for it! I agree with many others here that I will support regardless of any extra perks! I'm just so glad you're addressing things so deeply personal and traumatic for so many people and absolutely tearing them apart as the harmful and predatory practices they are.

2021-02-28 03:21:43 +0000 UTCI'd like to hear an episode on the myth that weight loss requires exercise. I know it doesn't, and I know the research indicates that exercise does not lead to greater weight loss. Don't get me wrong, exercise is great for ALL kinds of mental and physical health, but it's not the secret to weight loss or maintenance (thank God!).

2021-02-28 03:16:29 +0000 UTCThis interests me, too. I was in the Emily Program for compulsive eating; it was expensive & pointless. I later learned that those therapists are basically trained in how to keep anorexics alive, and they treat all eating disorders the same way.

2021-02-23 16:38:34 +0000 UTCI wanted to second this - and especially the community organizing/human rights side of it. 2021-02-23 15:32:13 +0000 UTCI love this, & would hope that any take on a 12 step group included talking (during or before) with some people who actually participate or participated. The anonymity thing about 12-steppers sometimes results in only outside perspectives getting any airtime.

2021-02-23 01:27:14 +0000 UTCSecond this. I'm thinking of a friend who uses a wheelchair who was naturally thin for a long time and isn't anymore, and she is treated so differently as her body changes.
Jane
2021-02-23 01:22:52 +0000 UTCIt's also a deeply held belief in France and probably some other places that you have a civic responsibility to be as thin and attractive as you can. People will directly say, You are part of other people's scenery. It's rude to be fat (or unkempt, or etc.). I know we have it bad in the US but it's different, maybe differently awful, or maybe worse, in some other places.

2021-02-18 12:28:29 +0000 UTCI hate to compare this all the time to You're Wrong About (these are tied as my favorite podcast) but I'd love to hear you guys just talk about some things that aren't weight related in your bonus material, just because you are both so smart and funny. A tv show, a book, just whatever. I know you have backgrounds in community organizing and human rights - topics related to those could be interesting.

2021-02-17 16:37:42 +0000 UTCWhether as extra Patreon content or in just the normal pod, I second (and third) the idea of episodes on Noom and My Fitness Pal, I'm fascinated by how these apps come up with their metrics and recommendations for calorie numbers, macros, etc. I also recently read about Tim Ferris' evidently pretty popular "slow carb" diet and could see a deep dive on that being interesting. Love the pod, love Aubrey's book, excited to see what else you guys have coming our way!

2021-02-15 05:54:09 +0000 UTCI would like to see something about Atkins similar to your episode about snackwells/the low fat diets. When I was growing up my parents were obsessed with it, and I had an eating disorder as a teen that insluded being absolutely terrified of carbs.
Tess Conrad
2021-02-15 05:47:52 +0000 UTCI would echo those asking for a Noom episode. I work in the health tech industry and the way these companies are entering employer, insurance, and pharmaceutical markets is not being covered in the media. Additionally, I’d love to see you cover the temperance movement, the modern "sober-curious" movement, and problematic figures like Holly Whitaker. On the one hand, the $250b alcohol industry is way overdue for critique. On the other, visible influencers in the modern sobriety movement such as Whitaker often stem from some of the most pernicious, elitist, and perfectionist elements of modern wellness. I would love to see how you would dissect these topics. That said, you both are so brilliant and hilarious I will happily consume whatever you produce! Thank you for asking for our input :)

2021-02-14 19:42:06 +0000 UTCI don't know if this would be considered acceptable, but I had an eating disorder for 10 years, and getting into HAES/anti-diet/anti-fatphobia content was a big step in my recovery. Also the diagnosing for eating disorders is like way messed up. I think it would be really amazing to do en episode or series on eating disorders/disordered eating to bring more attention to it. I also love the dialogue between you two and just would be so thrilled to see what you guys would produce regarding this topic.

My 600-Lb Life especially is such a voyeuristic show about people who all have something really serious going on mentally. Yet, it endures.

2021-02-08 22:49:53 +0000 UTCI am so excited about this podcast so I am just happy to support you both in all your good work. I love hearing you chat; I know I’ve heard on extra content from YWA that a lot of what gets cut is like “just a sec let me check that” And “ bathroom break”lol but I think just hearing you both chat about current issues surrounding this (rather than maybe focusing on sharing specific info on a topic) would be great. I love what you guys have to say :) As for regular topics, I would love for Aubrey to go into more detail about the “levels of fatness” she talks about in her book. I don’t think people not living this experience truly understand that there is privilege even among those considered “obese”; where you carry weight, what your size is, etc. But in any case keep up the great work! Look so forward to new episodes!

2021-02-05 20:23:42 +0000 UTCOH! and size issues in the hobby sewing community! There's so much there too.
Lesley Phillips
2021-02-05 17:43:36 +0000 UTCI am so happy to be here and to support you! And I am also here for you when you are ready to do an episode on CrossFit.... ;)
Lesley Phillips
2021-02-05 17:40:52 +0000 UTCIntermittent fasting for sure (also other diet fads like keto and raw food). Segmented sleep. Also how different body types go in and out of "fashion".
Casey Roos
2021-02-04 22:34:52 +0000 UTCI'd love to hear your thoughts on corporate/workplace "wellness" programs - so many are about intentional weight loss, and often by companies that do nothing to actually support health for their employees.
Joanna Stone
2021-02-04 21:04:53 +0000 UTCLove you! Never change! Topics I'd love to hear your take on: Kellogg and other turn of the last century health crazes; bariatric surgery; medical "trends" that don't help patients like the recent swing from "treat pain over anything else" to "refuse to treat pain at all". Oh, the concept of hysteria and the medicalization/demonization of women being women.
Katherine Perez
2021-02-04 20:19:10 +0000 UTCI'd love to hear about the history and effect of language! Like, how "fat" is considered not ok by thin people, even when you say it about yourself. And how "curvy" and "thick" came in. Basically, all about the language used to describe ourselves.
Claire Gunter
2021-02-04 19:02:40 +0000 UTCJennifer, I love that you brought this up! I have 2 kids and they are quite young, but I'm seeing that the tweens/teens in my life have a way better relationship with food and the diet industrial complex.
Claire Gunter
2021-02-04 19:00:25 +0000 UTCDon’t need extras but as a vote in favor of something I bet y’all have planned—just going over the history of the fat liberation/pride movement in the US, and maybe even inviting some fat studies scholars (academic and otherwise) to be on the show...I’m a real history nerd and would love to hear y’all’s commentary and perspectives
Drew Kotlarczyk
2021-02-04 17:14:46 +0000 UTCI also don’t want to request extra work either but if you’re looking for it, what about shorts on food ingredients/elements commonly vilified or deified by the industry: quinoa, stevia, Olestra, carbs, fiber, etc.
Jessica Charlton
2021-02-04 17:06:03 +0000 UTCI was listening to it on my walk to work and laughing so much - I think I got some strange looks from other people I passed!

2021-02-04 16:48:06 +0000 UTCThis has become my new favorite podcast and I get so excited listening to the opening music which I also love btw. I was wondering if there is any research on fecal transplants for weight loss. I had a friend that had c. Diff infection in her gut and tried for almost a year to get rid of it with expensive prescriptions but nothing was working. She literally lost so much weight, hair, energy, it was bad, and then a doctor suggested a fecal transplant and her brother was the donor and she was better in like a week. I know gut micro biome is a current area of research but I was just curious if there had been any thing related to this and weight loss.
Jill Palermo
2021-02-04 15:50:58 +0000 UTCMaybe just more comments on the Everything I eat in a day by a celebrity trend that happens. You could focus on one and do like a 5-10 min chat about how ridiculous they are. But I agree with Casandra above, I’m supporting you for the work you already do and don’t need extras.
YoursTruelyMelly
2021-02-04 12:27:02 +0000 UTCCan you please do and episode on weight loss surgery?
Lindsey Fowler
2021-02-04 06:37:03 +0000 UTCHonestly, I will continue to just give you money and expect nothing for it but the truely wonderful podcast that already exists. But sometimes I would like to know other things that you two find useful or interesting or are mildly obsessed with for a period of time. Like maybe other podcasts you listen to that are hidden gems, or a book you want to throw at everyone you meet because it was so good. That sort of thing. If that's too weird, the podcast is amazing and I am happy. Have my money.

2021-02-04 06:33:54 +0000 UTCSeconding Intermittent fasting. It is a HUGE thing for the athletes I train with. It's bananapants.

2021-02-03 21:54:59 +0000 UTC- Calories in calories out, exercise for weight loss (general bs around weight loss or what the science is telling us now) - ww, Noom , Jenny Craig - weights trends over the decades.. think Kate Moss 90’s vs Kim Kardashian 2020’s etc
Betsy Wightman
2021-02-03 21:36:57 +0000 UTCThank you for all the great research and content you are already doing! It would be fun to hear your quick takes on current wellness headlines. Also, what you’re reading. Q&As. Guest interviews.
Chelsea Bailey
2021-02-03 19:03:30 +0000 UTCI could see episodes on: - Intuitive Eating - Intermittent Fasting - Nature vs. Nurture - Inclusive sizing (in clothing) - Intersection of weight and race - how "weight management" is dealt with by men - Heroin chic As for extras, I would love to see a live taping! I would also like to hear about Aubrey's book every chance possible. Michael, you do some really emotional reporting and I'd love to focus on your personal experience when researching your incredible article on obesity. Can Sarah Marshall be a guest? Lindy West? Y'all could host some dope people.
Claire Gunter
2021-02-03 18:57:11 +0000 UTCAs a #MethodologyQueen, I'd love to hear more about research methods! So grateful for this podcast and the excellent content you've all been making.
Liz Possee Corthell
2021-02-03 18:51:59 +0000 UTCAs much as I adore extra full length episodes from my favorite podcasts, I feel patron content should NOT be a load of extra work. I’d love anything you have fun doing that is not a huge suck on your time. I want to be a support for the work you do. I don’t want you to do a bunch extra ❤️
Cassandra Lewis
2021-02-03 18:35:27 +0000 UTCWellness MLMs would be a good topic. They absolutely prey on people (mostly women) and use all kinds of bullshit claims. A few even got in trouble for bullshit covid claims last year. This would probably be better for a main episode, not a bonus episode though. Love the show and can’t wait to listen to future episodes!
Robyn Norgan
2021-02-03 17:41:02 +0000 UTCYes! An acquaintance I follow on Instagram is deep into Isagenix, and I’m kind of fascinated by it.
Jennifer Czechowski
2021-02-03 17:38:34 +0000 UTCI’m sure there’s some gold to be mined from shitty celebrity diet books. I’d also be interested in generational differences in attitudes about weight. I feel like my generation (Gen X) inherited my mom’s generation’s awful ideas about weight, but my daughter (14) and her friends don’t seem fazed by it. I’ve been wondering if that’s a common experience. Thanks for making this fantastic podcast—I love it!
Jennifer Czechowski
2021-02-03 17:36:55 +0000 UTCeating disorder/body image therapist here - so grateful for this podcast and the work you do. i have been recommending it to clients and colleagues left and right. there are so many myths i would love to hear trashed (michael hobbes reacting to bad science is one of my favorite features of any podcast). i think an episode on the bad science regarding weight and pregnancy/fertility would be amazing, as well as the myth of the 2000 calorie a day one size fits all diet. i also think it would be cool to hear you guys dissect the cultural attitudes/language around fitness and movement and all of the insidious ways we love to shame ourselves for existing. i was also wondering if you guys have any plans to address health at every size and/or intuitive eating. i think it could be really helpful to a lot of listeners, especially since you're both so great at making big concepts digestible and accessible. sorry, probably throwing too much out there. as i said, i'm a huge fan and so happy to be a listener. you're doing such important work. thank you!
Naomi Kidder
2021-02-03 16:59:31 +0000 UTCWhat you’re doing is amazing, on the topic of systemic fatphobia, particularly in medicine, I’d love an episode or a few episodes on the alternatives to the mainstream fat=sick model. I think that would be very empowering for folks because it’s hard to know that the system is set against you, but not have tools to push back. Or an episode on beauty trends through time and how they relate to classism, racism, sexism, etc. Ex. Being bone white was a desirable trait for periods of European history, but in current trends it’s being ran. Or a juxtaposition to places like Thailand where white skin is still the most desirable color and being “black” (quotes for the translation of the thai word used being literally the color black, but not with the connotation of being of African descent). Thanks for all you do, I wish I could make your podcast required listening for my classmates in our nurse practitioner cohort.
Andrea Eickelmann
2021-02-03 15:47:50 +0000 UTCIf you are thinking about doing bonus episodes perhaps a historical focus. For example - Benjamin Rush - discussed in today's podcast. There is much more crazy (horrible) stuff to do with him and the founding of most modern medical specialties. I think it would make for some great short (15-30 min) episodes. Love the show!
Katie
2021-02-03 15:38:39 +0000 UTCAgreed! A resource list would be awesome.
Lacey England
2021-02-03 15:23:28 +0000 UTCVery much the same as Jennifer - I love the You're Wrong About bonus eps where it's an AMA, or just you both chatting about things you've been working on or have just found interesting but aren't indepth enough for a full podcast! Essentially what I'm really saying is that I just want to hear you both saying more things!
Steph Lockhart-Franklin
2021-02-03 15:17:37 +0000 UTCHas Jenny Craig already been said? Some of my friends’ parents were super obsessed with it in the early 90’s, and it seems like it fell off when WW hung on.
Dena
2021-02-03 15:13:58 +0000 UTCI really like the AMA's, you (Mike) do with Sarah for You're Wrong About! I'd also love to hear more about the experience of writing your HuffPo article (Mike) and your book (Aubrey). Basically anything that doesn't take more time for you all than just chatting!
Jennifer
2021-02-03 15:08:40 +0000 UTCThank you both for making such a fun, intelligent, insightful and fascinating podcast! I love to hear about/read anything that's interesting to you guys (I loved Aubrey's book as well). I definitely second the support for an extended cut, bonus length Weight Watchers episode! I am also interested in celebrities and influencers promoting tummy tea, appetite suppressant lollipops, waist trainers etc on Instagram and what that's like for young people. Keep doing what you're doing, you guys are awesome and I'm gonna wear my new Maintenance Phase t-shirt with pride <3
Imogen Cable
2021-02-03 15:06:30 +0000 UTCI would love more resources to dig further into the topics, so maybe a related resources section with additional books and articles.
Maxine
2021-02-03 15:05:05 +0000 UTCLiterally anything you post, I will listen to. AMAs are always great, stuff you don't have enough info to make a full-length episode on but still want to talk about, but legit, anything!
Tara Moore-Lawless
2021-02-03 14:06:55 +0000 UTCAll extras are welcome. Answering AMA questions, weird tidbits from eps that weren’t related to the topic but interesting, random pointless stories that came out of discussions. Anything!
Sheala Bacon
2021-02-03 13:54:37 +0000 UTCPeople are always telling me to “try tracking macros” and I would really like to hear your take on this, so I have a succinct way to tell them to shut the fuck up.
Jenna Olsen
2021-02-03 13:31:47 +0000 UTCYes, I feel greedy asking for more, although I am curious if there are topics you have ruled out -- perhaps because they're overdone. So that would be a fun bonus episode -- Things We Are Never Going to Talk About.
Laura Lippman
2021-02-03 12:59:25 +0000 UTCI agree with all the others that said we don't need perks, we just love the work you are both doing!!
Autumn Theriault
2021-02-03 12:06:11 +0000 UTCMini Eps of stuff that was cut out or you didn’t have time for in the regular episodes! You could call it Small Portions or something. 😂
pickled lenin
2021-02-03 11:41:23 +0000 UTCI second the whole "clean" eating nonsense, and all the keto/paleo stuff too!
Stephanie Zielenkievicz
2021-02-03 11:18:18 +0000 UTCI know you kind of talked about juice cleanses in the Moon Juice episode but I would love more about the whole fucking juice phenomenon; it’s hard for me not to see it as a socially acceptable eating disorder. Perhaps along the same lines, orthorexia (the eating disorder that’s obsessed with like cleanness and healthiness to a disruptive degree). And also I know you are planning to do an episode on weight watchers but like MAN do I want to hear the super extended directors cut of that episode,
Sarah A
2021-02-03 10:57:51 +0000 UTCOoo seconded! How about ‘The Great Masticator’ Horace Fletcher?
Emerson Easley
2021-02-03 08:58:40 +0000 UTCReally enjoying the podcast, thanks! Not sure if it would fit the theme (as diet due more to religion than health), but things got reeeeally weird around Medieval Lent diet restrictions, like folks saying puffins are basically fish, that geese grow from barnacles, and some dark stuff with baby rabbits (https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/mock-medieval-foods). It seems we've always been good at both imposing dietary rules on ourselves and then stretching those rules to their outer limits!
Emerson Easley
2021-02-03 08:55:18 +0000 UTCA more ‘free form’ portion of the episode or extra conversation is always great! Or a more short answer (what about homeopathy???!!) format. I know you won’t be able to do the proper researcher, but it’s better than ours!
Olivia Jennie
2021-02-03 07:56:32 +0000 UTCMore content! Bonuses podcasts or extra scenes that were cut.
Katie TerBush
2021-02-03 06:36:29 +0000 UTCI'm always fascinated why/how some diet and exercise 'fads' become almost cult like e.g. isagenix, crossfit.
BrookeA
2021-02-03 06:24:56 +0000 UTCI just want more of the two of you chatting and joking and being skeptical, empathetic, and funny. I will listen to anything you create. I would also listen to entire series of "really gross things from the past" because Michael marveling at the survival of the human race in the Snake Oil episode made me laugh so hard that I startled the dog.
Ann
2021-02-03 06:09:14 +0000 UTCI was just thinking today that you should cover the inventor of the Salisbury steak! It's more interesting than it sounds. 😅 You could do a whole series on old fad diets (pre-1900s).
Cassie Eldridge
2021-02-03 05:49:34 +0000 UTCYes! We've also been talking about doing full episodes for the main feed specifically on things that we like/use.

2021-02-03 05:46:19 +0000 UTCAbsolutely. I want even more Methodology Queen business
innocuous beans
2021-02-03 05:39:46 +0000 UTCIf you do an AMA style bonus ep, I'd love to hear about what wellness things you believe or want to believe or have tried despite any lack of evidence or evidence to the contrary. Do you secretly believe that crystals have healing power? Use essential oils? Not to make fun of you, just because we are all complex human beings who contain multitudes and I love that.
Nicole
2021-02-03 05:35:50 +0000 UTCDitto!!
Barbara Ford
2021-02-03 05:34:25 +0000 UTCa classic would be AMAs/Q&As but honestly I'm just so happy y'all exist. I listened to Snake Oil today on my weekly self-care hike and literally out loud in the middle of the forest yelled "WHAAAAAAAAAAT" at a certain key moment that I shall not spoil! :P
Max F
2021-02-03 05:34:11 +0000 UTCAfter hearing Michael mention Jeffrey Star, I’m very interested in hearing any and all opinions regarding toxic YouTubers.
Audrey Pendleton
2021-02-03 05:33:41 +0000 UTCI think it'd be great to hear some of the research you decide to cut! I know it probably all doesn't make it to the pod. And your research process as well.
Lyndsey
2021-02-03 05:30:14 +0000 UTCThank you both for such a great pod!
Sarah Chamberlain
2021-02-03 05:28:09 +0000 UTCI will happily consume whatever content you produce. With that said, I'm here because I love what you're already doing and don't need a single damn thing to make supporting you worthwhile. <3
