Upcoming Shows (Decided)

Thank you for all the feedback on my last post! It was really helpful

I decided the best combination of what I want to do + what makes sense is to:

This schedule will start this week.

Reasoning / Notes:

Thanks to everyone for all the excellent recommendations and feedback! I'm not planning on going anywhere and as time goes on I get to do the classic, long recommended shows, so for most recommendations, it's just a matter of time.

Hope you guys are having a great week so far and see you later today for HxH

Comments

While I loved the Frieren manga, I wouldn't put it anywhere near shows you mentioned. (particularly Monster and Pluto being 10/10s for me) Friesen isn't anything unique but it had a premise that hooked me while being a feelgood and bittersweet fantasy.

Alex H

I joined patreon SOLELY to suggest Frieren, and this is the first thing that greets me. instant gratification <3

CH

YAA, Sousou No Freiren is so good and has so many underlying tones

WHOY

It all sounds great!! 🙌

Tati

Kinda on the same page with you about everything you mentioned. I went to watch Frieren because of the hype and couldn't believe when I saw the score on MAL, absolutely overrated. I find it a piece of entertaining OK to watch when you want to chill while eating your breakfast. Give it a try, I guess everyone perceive it differently depending on what they're looking for when watching a show.

Deea

That was a beautiful way to explain what the story encompasses

Goldy

I'm amazed by many things in Frieren but I guess the thing I'm amazed the most by would be the overarching emotional bedrock that seeps through the entire series and all its characters, that theme consisting of grief, the loss of time, nostalgia, etc. and being able to deal with the positives and negatives that come with the inevitable passage of time. I am a very nostalgic person with a great memory and I often think about people from the past who I have lost or lost contact with and I also reflect on a lot of the good memories I have as well. I find a lot of Frieren's emotional experiences similar to my own even though I am not a thousand plus year old Elf. Other things that amaze me in Frieren: The absolutely incredible art style, color scheme, and overall Direction. The spectacular sakuga animation during the many great action sequences. The 10/10 OST soundtrack from Evan Call, one of the best composers working in the anime industry today. All the side characters from small one episode roles to the other members of Frieren's parties, are interesting, likeable, and well written. There hasn't been a single character yet that I dislike or don't enjoy spending time with, even when its just a character you only know for one episode.

Jasmine Tea Enjoyer

I'm all the way caught up with Frieren and feel totally opposite. The deeper themes of the show have been examined and touched upon in so many different unique and interesting ways. over and over again the show explores frieren's struggles with time, grief, and relationships in new and emotionally relatable ways. Not to even mention the spectacular side characters, fantasy world building, animation, OST, OP's/ED's... the show does everything right for me. The hype is more than warranted.

Jasmine Tea Enjoyer

I feel like everyone is always quick to call a show amazing. It's just not, it's great for sure but amazing is so over the top. Like what amazed you ???

Goldy

I really enjoyed it too! For me, I approached it by thinking of it as a fanfiction of the ATLA story, maybe an alternative universe/canon rewrite where an "author" put their own spin on things to make it more unique in their own style. I think it helps me appreciate the live action more and makes it harder for me to keep comparing it to the original. Even the parts that have room for improvement don't bug me when I think of this as fans trying their best. Although maybe I tend to be more forgiving of TV shows in general because I'm a writer too, so when I get to a "meh" moment, all I think is "oh man that's relatable, sometimes we don't know how a scene turns out until we sleep on it and look at it in hindsight, oops!" XD

Festivalkyrie

@Jake, based on what I’ve seen people say it does such a great job because the dialogue is more natural sounding and doesn’t require a more energetic performance.

Matthew Richson

Which is a shame too cause the dub is genuinely incredible for this series. Frieren’s VA does an amazing job in that role. But neither version is weak or lacking so I’m fine with whatever

Jake White

I totally agree. I thought Frieren made a lot of promises in the first few episodes that it ended up never following up on. Like it continued to skim the surface of its “deep” themes but never really saying anything insightful about them. Truly bizarre

Steve.

Hopefully you get more out of it from the reaction. Anecdotally, I thought it was good but not outstanding, until I started a rewatch and my appreciation for the show went up massively. May end up giving it a 10 at the end of this season!

Vincent

Sad to see none of my recommendation taking root, but glad you actually picked what YOU wanted at this time (ATLA, SG0). I'm not much interested in either, sadly, but I will be following you for Frieren, until the season ends and then you're gonna have to wait a couple years for the continuation.. Perhaps then we can go back to shows that have actually finished, like I keep saying.

Arakis

"not much to talk about fr" I didn't want him to start Frieren at this point but Je-sus, man, you are intentionally petty. The show is amazing.

Arakis

It didn‘t click with me either bro, it‘s premise it very abstract, while the rest (worldbuilding, most characters, etc.) are exchangable / dull

enes y

Frieren is kinda meh- actually I don‘t understand why it‘s hyped at all, but different strokes for different folks ig. Be honest about the show, becuase I deeply care about your opinion. I find it to be pseudo-interlectual. It‘s very anime‘ish- Stuff like Cowboy Bebop, Monster or Pluto, heck even Vagabond (sadly Manga only) I seem to enjoy much more. I‘m still looking forward to your reaction to frieren, maybe you will change my mind ;)

enes y

Happy bday!!

Goldy

Yeah im just salty because it's super slice of lifey

Goldy

there is so much to talk about with frieren. its so dense and layered.

Jasmine Tea Enjoyer

i feel like atla netflix is ass. friren is good but idk... not much to talk about fr

Goldy

Thank you! I definitely will with these great reactions 😁🫰

Emman Reed

Woah happy birthday! Hope you have a great one 😊

Alex G

This week :)

Alex G

It’s my birthday and Mr.Goodwin gifts me with a HxH upload AND a Freiren announcement. Can’t wait! Looking forward to another great year

Emman Reed

eep!! I knew you would eventually pick up frieren its so sweet i cant wait!

Crystalrose

Appreciate it. Just want you to keep enjoying the reactions.

Douglas Davis

Very excited for the Frieren reactions. Also very happy to see that Re: Zero is in the future plans. Easily the most enriching and impactful story I’ve experienced.

Vali Sippola

does this schedule start next week?

Anya Mcghee

Damn you really picked the "all of the above" option. Anyways I'm excited for steins gate zero to come back after avatar. But I understand it will be awhile since they are both when time allows. Re:zero would be a good choice after hunter x hunter since they are both long.

Sage

My sister has let me know that she finds the dub particularly hilarious (I haven’t seen the show yet)

bl0odm1st

Lets GOOOOOOOOO Frieren!!!!!

Anya Mcghee

Sick, I think you’ll love Frieren and am looking forward to it.

Tyler Owens

I can think of several shows closer to 12 episodes that are worth watching like Hells Paradise for example, maybe that could be a slot one day

Seth

Very pleased that Frieren is being added to the rotation. It quickly went to the top of my list of shows I wanted you to react to - it really is that good.

Vincent

Yeah that makes a lot of sense, typically that slot is for currently airing shows like JJK recently. Come to think of it the next show there will probably be MHA

Alex G

Yess maybe after 0 ends you could have a slot specifically for short shows (under 30 episodes) that way you could cover more suggestions

Seth

@Matthew - There are some exclusively dub reaction channels on YouTube and Patreon, albeit most have smaller followings. I have to assume that some of them will watch the Frieren dub (if they haven't already).

Merfhew

Sounds like a great plan! Looking forward to it :)

DennisAnimeFan

I haven't watched it yet (and I'm on the fence about trying). To answer your question, it doesn't have to be perfect... but it's hard not to compare when the original show is so beloved. That's why I'm on the fence... I can't stop myself from making comparisons, and that will probably make the live action experience less enjoyable (for me).

Merfhew

Sorry for recommending different stuff every time but since you'te doing ATLA live action for tradition and nostalgia another one of your older shows you could revisit in the same vein would be with FMA 2003. I think you've mentioned interest before and the episode count isn't huge

Sale

This is awesome. I for one really enjoyed the ATLA live action, and think some of the criticism is unfair. It’s not close to perfect, but does it really have to be? It’s just so nice to be back in that world

BRus019

hopefully anyone except for goodwin bucks the trend for you

Jasmine Tea Enjoyer

Yeah but I just wonder any one would buck that trend is all. Oh well. I’ll still be watching the reactions.

Matthew Richson

everyone watches Frieren in sub from what I understand

Jasmine Tea Enjoyer

Haven’t been this hyped for Goodwin reactions since Kaguya season 3.

Jasmine Tea Enjoyer

Yeah they aired all in a row so most people binged all of them but you definitely don’t have too. They all work as standalone episodes.

Jasmine Tea Enjoyer

No need to apologize about Re:Zero (although I appreciate the update). You plan to watch it eventually, which means you're saving the best show for last. 😉 Frieren will serve as a nice appetizer, but I'll probably be sporadic about tuning in. I've seen so many reactors watch it already, and while I think you'd bring unique insights, I'm kinda Frieren-ed out at this point. 😅 Perhaps, if a S2 gets announced, I could use your reactions to refresh my memory when the season gets closer (instead of doing another solo watch).

Merfhew

Frieren, what a god damn masterpiece. You’ll love it. Though I’m curious. No one has reacted to the dub, not saying you have to in this case. If only because I’ve seen no one react to that version.

Matthew Richson

FRIEREN LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOO

Jasmine Tea Enjoyer

I'm seconding the desire for Shogun, even if it doesn't happen soon I'd be super interested in you covering it!

Aidan Pullen

Thanks! I actually already started watching it. On Crunchyroll it's broken up into normal length episodes so that's likely how I'll do it.

Alex G

Big fan of this plan. Looking forward to Frieren especially!

Oak

Wuhuu, people rejoice :) the time has come

Marko

Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Frieren, probably one of my favourite shows of the year. I’m sure you’ve probably seen some descriptions of the anime, but if possible I recommend going in completely blind and just experiencing the show.

Alter Nate

Heads up for frieren, the first four episodes were aired as one I think. Someone correct me if I’m wrong

Sunny

I had no intention of watching the ALTA live action but worth it if I get to hear you talk about avatar some more

Megan

looking forward to it, would’ve loved shogun as it releases weekly but i’ll just take this chance to make it a pre-recommendation for later 😂

armando

FRIERENNNN alex you’re the best

Mima

Nice

Rekway

Excited for Frieren!!

Megan

I think if you watch avatar, you will want to re re rewatch the animated series. Which is a win anyway lol

Rafael Miranda

Solid plan
