I like how Himmel's VA changed his voice to deliver the "Nothing." line. Really made it super sad, as if he had a lump in his throat from the strong emotions that overcame him (https://web.archive.org/web/20110712205858/http://indianapublicmedia.org/amomentofscience/a-lump-in-your-throat/)

2024-04-22 21:17:22 +0000 UTCReally feel you on the gift-giving thing. Whenever I'm buying even something as small as a birthday card, I spend way more time thinking about which card to get than I think most people would. I want it to feel meaningful, so if it's something as short-lived as a birthday card I want it to feel like it's from *me*, rather than just being something that anyone could have got them. I don't want it to be something generic and thoughtless, but I also don't want it to feel like it has a message that isn't in character for me to give. I think for most people, they're more concerned with the notion that you did something for them just by getting them a card, but that's not how I think about it. And with gifts, I'm the sort of person where "it's the thought that counts" doesn't apply. If someone gets me something that I don't like or can't use... Well, then it was just a waste of money and storing it is a waste of space, so it's actively negative. And I project that expectation when trying to think of something to get for other people, when it's probably not something that they're as concerned with.

2024-04-22 12:57:04 +0000 UTCYour little rant about gifts was a bit weird for me, as literally everything you said was 1:1 my feelings on gifts. I personally don’t like getting gifts, because I hate when something I own doesn’t have a purpose of some kind, even if it’s just decoration or what have you. This of course causes me to stress to no end about giving gifts, because I end up projecting my own feelings on the matter onto the people I’m buying gifts for. It’s also just conceptually weird to me, the idea of giving gifts to people on a certain day. It kinda defeats the purpose of what I believe a gift should be. I shouldn’t feel obligated to get someone a gift because it’s a holiday or whatever. It feels disingenuous, though I recognize that’s not always the case for some people. I’d much rather get someone a gift because I am able to recognize a reason I’d want to give them a gift.

2024-04-22 08:28:33 +0000 UTCI think Sein is a little younger than that. I'd put Sein and his friend to be around Stark and Fern's age in that flashback, maybe a bit older. Given that it's been 10 years since then, I'd put Sein in late-twenties to early-thirties.

2024-04-22 07:00:51 +0000 UTCI think it's more broadly a Japanese thing? Like, Higanbana/Red Spider Lily's symbolize death, and tons of anime shows love referencing that.

2024-04-22 06:46:10 +0000 UTCI don't think she forgot, cause she was with Himmel for 10 years, and still decided to spend the next 50 years after their adventure being a magic hermit in the woods. I think Frieren not being fully cognizant of her feelings makes more sense. She's already brought up that elves don't have strong libidos or feel the need to reproduce, so whatever feelings she felt for Himmel were likely completely emotional and not physical. And were also likely the first time she ever experienced those feelings before. PS. I miss the Melon Lord :(

2024-04-22 06:42:59 +0000 UTCThis episode mentions "flower language" or hana-kotoba again, and while the "mirrored lotus" is a fantasy element, the lotus flower itself as a symbol of eternity or eternal truth is definitely real. In always surprised at the range of shows that reference flower language (FMA, Spy x Family...), and yet how little it seems to be absorbed in culture broadly. Maybe I'm just not hanging out in the flower-giving crowd?

2024-04-22 06:41:27 +0000 UTCThis show gives the same vibes as realising someone was flirting with you in school 10 years ago but in this case it's like 100 years.

2024-04-22 04:09:54 +0000 UTCSo THAT'S what the clock tower meant. I was wondering why she stared at it in the beginning. And yeah at first I thought Frieren was just totally clueless about anything love related during the initial journey, but as the show progresses it seems it was there for her too but she either wasn't fully cognizant or forgot at some point after the journey

2024-04-22 03:54:00 +0000 UTCYeah there was never any turning point like I expected as a kid, an invisible line I'd cross where my concept of self would suddenly have some essence of "adult" though I very much think of myself as one

2024-04-22 03:52:09 +0000 UTCIt was mentioned very early on in a small phrase by Freiren that elves are quietly going extinct partially because of the Demon King. But, also because they generally they don’t have romantic feelings due to their long lifespans felt no need to reproduce. The manga expands a bit more but that’s the main reason.

2024-04-22 03:28:46 +0000 UTCThis episode made me cry twice at the Heiter headpat scene and the obvious one... so so good. This is one of the best episodes of the show, which is saying something because every episode is a 9/10 or higher for me.

2024-04-22 02:46:33 +0000 UTCThis was probably the episode that made me think the love between Frieren and Himmel wasn't as one-sided as I initially thought. It was always clear she had a very special bond with Himmel, but I think searching for the ring and remembering how he gave it to her made her finally realize Himmel was truly in love with her, and that MAYBE she loved (and still loves) him too, and that she was just too emotionally stunted at the time to understand or process her own feelings. Himmel's whole narrative purpose is to be Frieren's "lost Lenore"; he is still her guiding light and moral compass. Not spending enough time with him is her biggest regret and it was Himmel's death that served as the catalyst for Frieren's character development and her desire to connect with humans. It's unclear whether Himmel ever told Heiter and Eisen about his feelings towards Frieren, but they clearly knew something was going on since they were so adamant about sending Frieren to Aureole and speak with Himmel's spirit. (In episode 4 Eisen says "I felt sorry for you and Himmel".) At first I wasn't a huge fan of the idea about speaking with the dead but even if Aureole is not real and she never gets the chance to talk to Himmel again, I think she does need some kind of closure before even thinking about a possible new love interest. It's already bad enough to think Frieren might be slowly falling in love with a dead man. I also like how the clock tower stood between them in the "proposal" scene, symbolizing the fact that the only thing keeping them apart is time.

2024-04-22 02:35:35 +0000 UTCI totally relate to what you were saying about having the same mind as when I was 5. Almost like I can remember being conscious of who I am from a really young age.

2024-04-22 01:34:52 +0000 UTCI’m pretty sure Sein is older than 23. He said his friend left to be an adventurer 10 years ago and Sein was an adult before his friend left.

2024-04-22 01:18:41 +0000 UTCThus the true beginning of the head pat fan service in this anime. I also recently watched the dub version of the fall scene. My god Stark’s English VA has some lungs on him. 😂
