In Frieren episode 16, Long-Lived Friends, Kraft may not be remembered for his heroism but we will remember him for his abs.

Ahhh, this show always makes me tear up.

Kraft... he probably lived so long to see 2 Demon Kings rise and fall from power. Frieren is obviously a studied individual, being a mage and all, and she didn't know of the name. Perhaps it was so long ago that people hadn't invent written language, or simply everything has crumbled to dust. No comments about Voll, really. Super sad. Like, Violet Evergarden levels of sad.

So, I didn't mention it when Kraft first appeared, but his name means something like 'power' or 'force', possibly referring to his past as a powerful hero. Voll's name means 'full', but the meaning escapes me. Maybe he just lived a full life?

Something I never noticed until this watch, is that the statue of Kraft displays him as a warrior. They even mention it as well and it went right over my head. This alone has massively increased my fascination with Kraft. This means at some point in time he was a warrior, who switched classes and became a monk. It’s making me reexamine all his lines about his past and his views on his religion. It fits well with the rest of the episode, and how after all their talk about carrying on memories, eventually everything is forgotten, at least in a literal sense. Stubborn Old Woman said they were heroes who once saved the world, and that’s something that has a lasting effect on the world, even if the details were forgotten. Thankfully for our sakes, Kraft is an elf. So there’s hope yet we can learn something about it.

This shit hit me from left field, i was cackling LOL

I'm sure she felt it in her demon bones.

Someone out there catching strays for sure.

Yeah, I have aphantasia. I can’t picture anything in my head it’s completely black no matter how hard I try. But my audio memory is amazing.

A few episodes ago, Kraft hinted at being an incredibly long lived elf, and how no one remembers his heroic exploits, and now we see a statue of him honoring his heroism. Hopefully we get more backstory about that, and I hope he ends up running into one of his statues at some point. It might be a mood booster for him considering how down he felt about only having the goddess to rely on for praise.

The culture thing is really interesting / funny. You can change the setting and aesthetic easily, but culture and worldview seems a lot stickier. It's like the "what's water" joke about the fish. I've also thought about this watching western media with Korean subtitles. Honorifics get brought in based on age and position rather than the context and feeling of the interactions 😂

When I first heard about the idea I did the exercise and found that I'm pretty low on the scale. As I said, I've noticed a few key differences on how people process and recall information and I'm sure there are way more than I'm thinking of. Relatedly, learning about the different learning styles (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) was really useful to me just in recognizing that not all learning inputs are equally effective for me.

The speech at 15:00 was genuinely touching, there were a few zingers Alex came up with this episode, but I'm going to focus on a random little detail, since that's my schtick. I find it really entertaining how this is supposed to be in some sort of Germany-inspired fantasy land, but everyone's mannerisms and so many small things are the most Japanese possible. The jumbo berry special that Stark ate, for example, was the most Japanese-looking dessert I could imagine. For this episode, though, it was Voll. 6:50 "He's kinda like a statue." -> I'm glad you said that. I also thought he was very much like the "jizou" statues you see in Japan. One of my favorite things in the show is how indignant Frieren gets when Voll asks if she remembers Himmel. Such a great and subtle way to show her character growth.

Interesting thing about the “picturing the apple” concept: My best friend actually has aphantasia, which is the inability to picture things in one’s mind. He used the picturing the apple idea when he first explained what aphantasia was like to me; he literally can’t picture what an apple looks like in his mind. It affects a lot of his life too, like he struggles to be invested in books. He can read and understand the words, but if a sentence says something like “The two warriors’ swords clashed”, he literally can’t picture it. It’s one of those things that is so hard to believe and comprehend unless you’re personally affected by it, it’s pretty crazy stuff

Two days of Frieren in a row… Very Cool!

"Human and demon relationships may be challenging, but then again I've done it" is such an insane quote. I think it might be my favorite thing you've said
