As she herself mentions the queen only has traces of human blood within her. She’s still a little human which is why once she learns of them she gives names to the royal guard and king but she’s by far the least human of the ants we regularly see.

Mortis

All good points. I think it's specifically the queen that does it for me. She does all this, devoting her every action to having this kid, then he basically murders her and her reaction is something like "good boy! Do you want some more of mommy's flesh? Hey you other irrelevant kid, go give my important kid this name I picked out for him." The interesting thing is, that too feels very real in humans. But I think it's a darker side of parenting, that sort of smothering "only my kid matters" type of thing that come to think of it is probably triggering me because I saw it so much as a teacher 😂 Ultimately I don't think the queen was ever really anything else than a biologically driven automaton that would have gladly experienced the world burn to satiate her instincts, not unlike a savage bacteria or virus that kills its host (and yeah this too is a potential side of humanity).

I think the Queen’s death is honestly really well done. I also think pretty much everyone has the reaction of “oh no, the Queen’s dead”, which is further helped by the Queen’s attitude during her final moments. To cycle back to when Knuckle gave his reason for not being able to go to NGL being essentially, “he’s too soft”. I find it interesting that Morel also shares that trait, and even more so that they were both getting emotional. I think it’s fairly clear that given the circumstances of the Queen’s death, their emotion would’ve been in response to Colt’s. I know a few people with that level of empathy, but in this case it serves as a means to show how Morel and Knuckle consider Colt, and by extension the ants that remained. Morel in particular tells Colt to “get out of his sight” if he refused to make that promise. Given the initial mission, to show that level of empathy to those they were once offing repeatedly is very telling of their characters, and as Kite would have pointed out if he could, a dangerous mentality. In response to Colt’s own very human emotions, they chose to view him as human. I believe Kite’s Exact words in response to Gon were “What would you do if one of those bugs cared for its comrades?”. Given some further thought, this is actually a very common theme shared between all of the main antagonists so far. The Phantom Troupe commits horrific acts of violence, with little regard for those they hurt, but will also kill in defense of their own. Genthru and the bombers do the same, but argue over who to heal when they are both injured. The Queen had thousands killed to feed the King, but while dying she only cared about the King. In Colt’s case it’s a bit different, but the show loves to use that type of hypocrisy to humanize its villains. You mentioned the Queen’s genetic desire to continue her legacy at any cost, but I would almost relate that to the other antagonists’ desires to support each other. It’s likely that it’s often used as a device to show humanity in otherwise terrible people because it’s one of the most human compulsions I can think of. The desire to protect those you deem worth protecting is a major contributing factor to the existence of everyone alive today, and it’s likely the reason we still feel that desire, even in contrast to any number of horrible things we might do toward those we don’t deem “worth protecting”. That went on for longer than I thought. Sorry if I got a bit rambly. Can’t wait to continue this arc!

It’s easy to see the ants as like an evil force since we are viewing it from humanities perspective. But similarly to the ants we humans also consume a whole lot of other forms of life sometimes even in excess. From the ant perspective they’re just trying to expand and grow similar to how humans have for centuries. It would be so easy to hate them if the ants were just trying to destroy everything or they were some sort of virus or smtg but like humans they have grown to become complex beings and the future episodes will highlight this theme more.

It’s interesting how in a way the ants are sort of a parallel to humanity. While there is that insect animalistic instinct to procreate “at the expense of other things” or to follow the queen. I think the show does a good job to show how the ants are also capable of rational thought and emotion and aren’t just mindless killing machines driven by biological programming. This episode gives u a glimpse of that with Colt and the other ants saying that they have past memories so essentially passing on ideas like you said. It shows how the ants as a species are not just physically evolving, cos if u rmb in the beginning, the chimera ant that bit Killua was just a regular ant. Even the queen, which is so much more ant-like compared to the new generations of human-fused ants, is still capable of feeling love for her son.

It's funny how some ideas just take time. I remember my first time seeing that ending and not getting it at all. Now it's become one of my favorite ideas. I wonder how much that game played a role. Of course, it usually feels like one has come up with the idea oneself without remembering the origin or all the contributing factors

Love that we’re entering this phase of the arc now. The King is imo the best character in this entire story, so I’m super excited to see your thoughts on him. Also, when you were talking about what we pass on besides DNA, I just always come back to the Metal Gear Solid 2 ending. I think that perfectly encapsulates what you were talking abt.

Two media greats

Alex G

That's true. I'm just thinking about more queens holing herself up in dank caves across the world repeating the cycle at scale, exponentially growing

Alex G

The queen died oh no, anyway ...

RoZiiii

RIP Ant Queen. I don’t think I’ve felt this sad since the Earth Queen died….

Joey Healy

Also, just cause the chimera soldiers went off to become kings, doesn't mean that they are. That's just their human ego at play. They're nowhere nearly as strong as the actual king or even the guards, so defeating them should be much easier.

ODIS

Okay for once I might actually do this haha

Just a friendly reminder to please not watch the end credits starting ep 100 until 108. It's a big and unnecessary plot and character spoiler, so I suggest just wait until 108 to watch it.
