In what way can Kanne be translated as to be able? I’m not aware of a relation to the verb können. In German Kanne almost exclusively is used for a container from which you can pour water or as you said a tin can. If we want to find a metaphorical reason for her to be named that is equate it to the water thing. There’s no relation to können however. The origin of the word Kanne likely comes from the Latin word canna (something like sugarcane, the English name escapes me, it’s Schilfrohr in German)

2024-05-13 01:00:40 +0000 UTCWell jokes aside to be fair, there’s no actual numerical limitations or exclusivity towards who can pass this exam, nor any rules or factors that specifically require or force the mages to fight each other. The test is simply meant to be challenging and require unique moment-by-moment problem solving skills, but theoretically every team could’ve potentially passed by just catching their own Stille before time ran out. Provided there were enough present inside the barrier, of course. However the mages participating made the call *themselves* to go after other teams for their bird’s rather than try capturing one of their own.

2024-05-12 02:45:51 +0000 UTCSo Lawine's name means 'avalanche' while Kanne's name means 'can', as in a tin can. Although the deeper meaning of Lawine's name escapes me, Kanne's name can also be translated through the verb 'können', which means 'to be able', which I think represents a major part of her character arc.

WHOY
2024-05-11 13:25:20 +0000 UTCExactly, yeah. As test-takers, Frieren and company (and also Denken's team) are dealing with it precisely how they should, by attempting to work within the parameters and maximize their chances despite the flaws. My criticism is only for the test administrators sipping tea and being uncritical of their own actions and inaction.

2024-05-11 03:55:41 +0000 UTCI don't disagree with you, and I don't think unfair luck SHOULD be a metric that causes the failure of others in any capacity, but at the same time it DOES. Complaining about it, even if it's totally valid complaints, solves absolutely nothing without complimentary action, and even then that action isn't always rewarded sooooooooo... lol

2024-05-11 03:51:10 +0000 UTC21:10 "Detecting the detection." So, there are many words one might translate as "detection," but in this show, they use a very specific one: tanchi (探知), which is active, as opposed to something like kanchi (感知), just being sensitive to something passively, like sensing a disturbance in the force. So, we could think of it more like "someone just used the spell 'detect' on us," which of course could be picked up if you yourself were using it. :) Also, I *assume* that not saying the x in Hunter x Hunter was just a spur-of-the-moment abbreviation like saying FMA or MHA?

2024-05-11 03:44:36 +0000 UTCI also thought of Blue Lock, haha! But separately I really have always hated the whole "overcome the bad luck we intentionally don't minimize" thing. I think it goes to what Alex was saying about really thinking about the purpose of an exam or gatekeeping system. Is it relevant, necessary, and effective? Maybe? But if it isn't all three, it's irresponsible as people in a position to change it to keep that element in there. I think the prevalence of it and the fact that so many people don't challenge it is really sad. Those unjustified structures permeate so many parts of society (perhaps especially education and the job market) that people accept it as normal.

2024-05-11 01:48:58 +0000 UTC"There's a bit too much randomness for it to be a test of each individual person." I think in these kinds of tests in anime, they always go with the "you have to be strong enough to overcome bad luck" route, and this is only the 1st test remember. Slightly on topic you should watch Bluelock LOL
