This arc really has the absolute best and worst of HxH. It's messy and that adds to its charm for me, although I do wish the author had cut certain things like the Palm date. Just a horrifically cringy, unfunny way for her character to be presented. At least we're past it now. Even though Palm's a weirdo and her scenes are uncomfortable I still wish more people noticed the way her teacher Knov spoke to her. He's manipulating a mentally ill young girl who he's supposed to be teaching. It's no surprise she doesn't know how to act. Not only is she unwell, she has a controlling manipulator as a teacher.

I agree in general that the needle is mostly a symbol/representation for his struggles, but it does also serve a bit more of a purpose. For one, it shows how much worse Illumi is, putting an actual barrier into his brother's brain and more importantly, it ensures that the audience doesn't doubt Killua's resolve. If it was JUST psychologically, you could argue that he just lacked resolve - since characters like Gon and Kurapika overcome these barriers by sheer willpower. In an anime, and especially this one, if you can't overcome something by willpower, there has to be another reason or it might be called into question by SOME people.

When it came to Palm, Killua did the only right thing. The wisest choice, the wisdom imparted to us all by the prophet of prophets. "Lie big and run fast."

Same here, Killua is top 3 for me too. How could anyone not love him.

Sam B

Yeah that feels right to me too.

Personally, I don't think the Illumi needle really changes anything about Killua's actions and change. When you get down to it, what is really the difference between something being metaphorically drilled into his brain versus... Literally drilled into his brain? He still had to overcome those instincts on his own through his love and devotion to Gon, his will to protect him, exactly the same as if it was just psychological. The needle just acts as a physical representation of his doubts, giving us the visual of him finally identifying that part of himself in a moment of crisis and, through sheer will, violently removing it from himself.

I love Killua so much, he's like a top 3 anime character for me. Unexpectedly so as well, I never thought I would like him this much when I was watching the Hunter Exam. Also why are people always stalking Gon and Killua lol I feel like this happens every arc. Especially with Wing in Heaven's Arena lmao

Speaking of Goku, today (May 9th) happens to be "Goku Day" (get it? go-ku? 5-9?) ... I'll see myself out.

Ahh the infamous Illumi Needle. Personally, the whole thing doesn’t really make a difference to me. It was clear that by Killua’s breakdown he was already in the mental space he needed to be to act. He had already overcome the mental weakness he’d been struggling with. The way I view it at least, is that Illumi’s Needle was more of a last resort type of thing. He wouldn’t have been able to remove it in the first place if he hadn’t mustered the willpower to move past his weakness, so it doesn’t matter much either way. That’s why I generally tend to disagree with those who say it cheapens the moment. If anything it’s more in character for Illumi to have put it there, given what we know about him.

I'm glad you agree that the Illumi's pin is a bit of an unnecessary addition. I love the story beat itself, and even as a metaphor it works well - but the more important thing to recognize (as you have) is that this problem is a byproduct of his upbringing/conditioning, rather than something that could've easily been pulled out at any time.
