2024-05-19 11:50:29 +0000 UTCAlright, today we have one of my favorite characters, Denken. His name means "to think", and I think it rightly describes his personality. He is calm, thoughtful, and rational, and he has some of the best takes on stuff. Also, the bit that made me fall in love with him is when he's just like, "I'm out of magic, you're out of magic, put'em up!" It's just so great. Also, a second, shorter translation for Laufen. Her name means "to run", which simply references her speedy spell.

2024-05-19 07:56:44 +0000 UTCAt 17:06 Genau says "So she's the last great mage." From the way I understand it, and from what people have explained to me (and I think it's a quite important and relevant bit of information) the "great" here is not (really) an adjective to denote she the quality of her magic ability. It's part of the job description. She is not a "Mage", she is a "Great Mage" (perhaps having both words capitalized would help viewers more). Frieren is not just a mage who was with the party of the Hero Himmel. We've seen enough evidence by the reaction of other mages when they find out about her that to assume that any of the first class mages could have been part of the party. No, she is BOTH a Great Mage AND the mage who p-a-r-t-i-c-i-p-a-t-e-d in defeating the Demon King. It was a team effort and it's logical that people think Himmel did most of the job, despite what the truth might actually be (Frieren might have done 75% of the work, we won't know until we get the relevant flashback, but the important thing is that Frieren doesn't brag about it and if no one else passed it down, the knowledge is now lost). By the way, Denken is also above taking the test, same as Frieren. He might not be leagues ahead of them, like her, but he's definitely on the same level as a first-class mage. I think they say something like that in a previous episode. And even he knows that even if he could, in a practical sense, just head North, he shouldn't do it, and instead get certified first.

2024-05-19 04:02:01 +0000 UTCYeah there's so much more that goes into subtitles than just "These are the words that were said" but I super appreciate all of your comments that add to it. Usually it's the first time I'm seeing what you write and it's so fascinating

2024-05-19 03:58:53 +0000 UTCI'm flattered, but I'm going to stick to my lane of doing language acquisition research, haha. After all, you can't have paragraph-long explanations in subtitles. Translators always have to balance time, space, ease of understanding, and cultural relevance against faithfulness to the text and basic issues with translatability (as in honorifics and so on that have no equivalent). It's overwhelming, and it's much more creative art than science. I'm happy to add parenthetical comments when I think something important gets lost, but just because something got lost doesn't mean the translators are doing subpar work. It's a really tough job, and I respect them a lot.

2024-05-19 02:46:26 +0000 UTCUbel, Land, and Fern are really surprisingly chill together considering their conflicting ethics. I think they have a respect for the each other's ways of thinking or at least find it interesting to understand.

2024-05-19 01:48:45 +0000 UTC20:53 The subtitles had Denken saying "He [an Imperial Mage] keeps fighting until the end." I think that's missing a fair deal there. What he said was ζεΎγΎγ§ιγθΆ³ζ»γγγ (saigo made minikuku agaku nda), which is "[he] writhes around and struggles in an unsightly way until the end." In other words, Imperial Mages have no use for acting cool. It's their responsibility to get the job done, no matter how much they have to debase themselves to do it.

2024-05-19 01:47:17 +0000 UTCI don't know if you noticed but Serie is voiced by the same VA as Kilua. Also we enjoy your anti academic rants so don't worry about it lol. They are entertaining.

2024-05-19 01:09:02 +0000 UTCKeep making fun of this first round of the exam because I think the next round conceptually is something you're really gonna enjoy. I agree this first round is set up kinda stupid and the guy running it is boring. But, I think it's totally fine because they use this round as a way to introduce us to the new ensemble cast of mages, and to see as many of them fight off against each other as possible. The animation in these mage battle sequences is stellar. Frieren has some of the best overall production value I've seen in any anime, especially new stuff. It's just so consistently good.
