We barely got to see what she was capable of, and now potentially the coolest quirk in the show is gone. Imagine all the crazy interactions it could have had with other quirks from 1A! Also all the possibilities with character interaction like reconnecting with All Might and seeing the spirit of All Might in the kids. GAH I was hyped and feel like so many cool moments just got stolen from us :(

2024-05-30 18:26:11 +0000 UTCIt's wild to think that I seriously disliked her and this mini-arc when I first read it. I guess I thought it was a waste of time because her dying, but AfO not getting the quirk, was the obvious conclusion to me? Well, and the whole American-ness and her imitating All Might felt very offensive to me at the time (I'm not even American!). But I guess I had time to get to terms with her role in the story, because it played very differently to me this second time around. I suppose knowing where it was gonna go and without annoyance clouding my judgement, I was more willing to engage and see her and this arc for what they are. I now actually think she is cool, getting one over on AfO isn't easy! That whole "gotcha!" moment was great! Good on you for seeing it on the first go, but you've pretty much always been like that (Bakugou, Endeavor) and it's what I like about you, so I really shouldn't have been surprised! ;)

I do prefer the sub slightly, but I love having a reason to re-watch the eps! (I love getting to watch the dub even if I prefer the sub I mean) Second, I'm glad you didn't react the same way that I've seen some other people react to Star and Stripe's fate. "Wasted potential" some people say. It simply wouldn't make sense to introduce such an OP new character this late into the series and have them play a prominent role in the story. (EDIT: It wouldn't make sense for the story to suddenly start focusing on her prominently, rather.) The story is about Deku. All Might. Bakugo. Himoka Toga. Class 1-a. Shigaraki. AFO. Society as a whole! Heroes. Villains. Star and Stripes is a fantastic character. She is more than just a lazy plot device, which some people seem to think she is.

What she said in Japanese was that New Order would 反発 (hanpatsu) with other quirks. That's the word for when a new organ donation is rejected by the host, for example. It implies mutual annihilation. The English title of the episode, "Specter", is also an interesting choice (maybe in a good way because it can be interpreted in multiple plausible ways?). In Japanese it was just 亡霊 (bourei), "spirits of the dead." 😢

2024-05-30 05:35:48 +0000 UTCLook, what’s wrong with Kirishima’s noble goal of wanting to get as hard as possible. For some people, (or so I’ve heard) that can be quite difficult. The only more noble goal would be Aoyama’s great cheese hunt, that’s clearly been going on for a while now lol. Hardening aside, Star’s time with us was so short, but the impact she had was amazing. The idea you mentioned of All Might being much more than the man himself, really was perfectly shown through Star. The impact he left behind is what led Star to become the embodiment of a true hero. Much like One For All itself, the true impact of All Might is something that will continue to be felt for generations to come through the actions of others.

One thing I will say though, and this may or may not be related to what you're saying, is that perhaps one inherent problem with huge climactic finishes is that it's a payoff and therefore there isn't much "up" left, as it's the peak. And if this is indeed the end of the story, we've been there for quite some time. There's of course still a lot to do thematically and I loved season 6 as I'm sure I will love season 7 and 8 or movie or whatever but looking at Deku and the other characters, they're amazing, they went from kids to this already, they have less far to go than they've already gone (I'm guessing), the proverbial fire has been lit, and while there's still the tension of can we save Shigaraki and defeat AFO, at this point I am so confident in what's been established and where things are going that it feels like a final celebration of greatness as opposed to something building the greatness.

The lines aren't bad, and they convey the same thing, but something about the originals felt better to me. I don't normally watch the sub AND dub of a new episode, let alone so closely together, so now I'm wondering what other dialogue changes get made during the dubbing process. Granted, I don't speak Japanese, so maybe the dubbed lines are more accurate translations than the subbed version. I really need to learn Japanese. @8:59 Shigaraki (dub): "And since New Order is an ability that must be activated via verbal command, you had to choose between saving your body or saving your power. You prioritized your survival, and now you've lost everything." Shigaraki (sub): "As long as New Order is a Quirk that activates when a declaration is made, you won't be able to protect your Quirk and your body at the same time. You prioritized your body and lost both." @10:20 Star (dub): "... so before Tomura Shigaraki got me, I made a new rule. New Order... will rage against any other Quirk it encounters." Star (sub): "... so before Tomura Shigaraki got me, I made a new rule. New Order... will oppose other Quirks." @10:48 AFO (dub): "You treacherous swine! You cheated!!!" AFO (sub): "Caaaaathleeeen BAAAAAAATE!!"

My favorite parts of the series are still the arcs that mostly took place in the school grounds, like Season 1 and the Tournament Arc in Season 3. Not that last season and this seasons so far haven't been great, because they were.

Harry Potter this is not. NTM it shows how quickly things went to shit with All Might no longer active.

2024-05-30 02:05:48 +0000 UTCthis was a very controversial moment in the manga and i think the execution could've been better, but if you look at it from the POV that Shigaraki is the protagonist, this fight is basically just a mirror to Deku v Lady Nagant in season 6. Deku wants to save Lady Nagant and gets foiled by AFO's influence and in this case Shiggy/AFO wants Star's quirk but Allmight's influence ruins that. the way they play out are pretty similar too, (Deku hides through the building to surprise Nagant, Shiggy hides underground, they both use decoys too throughout the fight), they both get what they want during the climax (Midoriya reaches out, Shiggy destroys Star), they even end in pretty similar ways, Deku's last words are AFO and Tenko last word is of Midoriya. that being said, i do wish we got Star earlier or a mention earlier (but she probably didn't even exist tbh due to the nature of how weekly shonens are written and planned out).

Honestly, while not seeing her get to interact with the rest of the cast was disappointing, she made an impact. Her role in the plot is apparent. And perhaps her biggest contribution won’t be made apparent until season 8. And man did the main pilot’s(Ethan’s his name) VA go hard. He dedicated the performance to his daughter.
