Added 2024-07-16 01:00:03 +0000 UTCIn MHA 7x9, Extras, All for One pushes his Condescension quirk to new heights. Spinner gains a lot of weight and Endeavor loses some.

2024-07-28 07:22:53 +0000 UTCThe student-mentor relationships in this show are amazing! The Tokoyami-Hawks relationship is so beautiful to me, especially because Hawks never meant for it to be a big thing. He needed an in for information, and Shoto, his preferred choice, said no, so he picked the runner-up birdkid. That's all it was to him, coz he had bigger fish to fry with the LoV. And then Tokoyami surprised him, and he actually gave him some advice, coz you might as well help the kid out, right? And he gets a little attached, but hey, LoV investigation, so he doesn't really have time for him. And then Tokoyami saves his ass, because Tokoyami cares and notices, and doesn't stop believing in him even when he learns about the more ugly things Hawks has done. So Hawks cares too, enough so that his first instinct is to keep him far away from danger, because Hawks is expendable, but Tokoyami isn't expendable to him. Except Tokoyami doesn't agree and shows up to save him again. And somewhere along the way, this not-a big-deal-thing has turned into Hawks caring deeply about this kid and genuinely admiring Tokoyami and seeing him as a hero equal to himself, if not greater. Great stuff!

2024-07-19 14:28:33 +0000 UTCI think the humility aspect fits because, unlike most villains, All for One believes you can catch more flies with honey, and believes in flattery as a manipulation tactic. I’d imagine his use of it is like a customer service employee that is laying it on REALLY thick.

2024-07-17 02:58:51 +0000 UTCInteresting. Most sociolinguistic research says that 'boku' is much more common among *older* men compared to younger men (who typically use 'ore' with each other and only use 'boku' when talking at work) but you're right that it does have a deferent "little old me" connotation. It was originally a word for someone who works in the service of another person, so a humble servant. Eventually, "I, your humble servant," just became "I." So, more than about age, 'boku' is normally an indicator of humility, which is obviously not the case at all for All-for-One. I've always thought of it as just making the dichotomy super obvious between All-for-One and Deku, since Deku also uses 'boku' almost exclusively. Typically, "big bads" like All-for-One would use all sorts of other 1st person pronouns: 'washi' for older people, 'ware,' 'ore,' or something more exotic.

2024-07-16 23:28:56 +0000 UTCConsidering what we learn later it makes perfect sense.

2024-07-16 16:14:07 +0000 UTCThis is more of Ryan’s forte, but a strange detail about All for One’s speech patterns is that he always uses the pronoun “Boku”. It has a weird childish connotation, and it almost feels like he’s saying “What, little old me?” and feigning innocence or making it seem like he is at the other person’s service. It’s also pretty twisted due to the fact that he often grooms kids, so a grown adult talking to kids in the same way kids refer to themselves is pretty icky. The cherry on top is that he’s cartoonishly evil and he refers to himself as the “Demon Lord”, really showing that he is really just a man child.

2024-07-16 11:08:51 +0000 UTCAhh, that makes sense. If it's any comfort, while a bit jarring at first, you get used to it pretty quick and tend to not really notice it after a while.

2024-07-16 08:27:28 +0000 UTCAnother similarity is the "we can't throw everything we have at him because he'll just absorb us" strategy. The audio, I do clean up for background noise and sometimes it over corrects and takes too much natural sound out. Sorry about that

2024-07-16 04:58:39 +0000 UTCI have to say, "sticky balls in his mouth" was not on my bingo card. Moving on.... yeah I'm obviously a big fanboy of Hayashi Yuki's music, but I think MHA and Haikyuu are really made for his composition style of having little themes for ideas or characters and then making riffs or variations on those themes as the characters and themes themselves develop. In this episode you pointed out Todoroki's theme that has gradually evolved season to season (originally called "Your power" 君の力, but the S7 version hasn't been released yet) and All-for-One's. I feel like the outro speech was a summary of why I became a teacher, but I know that not all (or maybe even many?) educators join the profession for those reasons.

2024-07-16 04:35:37 +0000 UTCI hadn’t thought of a comparison between Jiro’s “This is what they’ve been experiencing?” moment and Pitou’s aura, but it fits surprisingly well. It’s funny how many comparisons can be drawn between both shows at the moment. Also, a question I’ve been meaning to ask for a while. Sometimes some of your uploads have the episode with a weird audio quality. It kinda sounds like the video is being played from the other end of a pipe. It’s only on some videos though, the last episode everything sounds normal, but this one has the weird audio. Basically I was wondering why that’s sometimes the case.

2024-07-16 01:50:11 +0000 UTCA shame that Endeavor didn’t shout “All for OONNNEEE!” like in the manga and the sub. Thought for sure the mouth movements wouldn’t matter. But the line they did in the dub worked just as well.

2024-07-16 01:36:07 +0000 UTCI'll make a post about this also but Invincible s2 will start this week and then a poll for the following show

2024-07-16 01:27:54 +0000 UTCYeah you’re right this episode is low key hilarious 😂 and I’m so glad they had AFO say Oopsie Daisy, in the sub he just says “Now” but in the manga he does actually say Oopsie Daisy, so I’m glad the dub team included it.

2024-07-16 01:25:23 +0000 UTCThis episode marks the end of Cour 1 of this season(4 recaps + 9=13). So since there was a break after this episode when it aired, there will likely be a break for the dub. Meaning episode 10’s dub won’t be until the end of July(specifically the 27th) As for the episode itself, Jon Swasey is just having so much fun as All for One this season, he definitely has a Lion’s share this season material wise compared to prior ones. And of course Patrick Seitz is doing great as Endeavor as per usual.
