I think MHA really gets to the center of its ideas and really "understands" them. A lot of the messages and themes feel familiar when you see them, but they're explored with what feels like greater depth. It's like that feeling when you've "known" something your whole life and then one day the weight of what that is hits you and you're like "oh THAT'S what that really means."

"Set your brother ablaze", omg, stop! I haven't even started watching yet, and it's already great! No, but seriously, peak commentary, nothing to add. I love Shoto and his journey so much! But AfO just gets more hateable every damn time, god!

I had to double check to make sure, but it’s true.

MHA was one of the first anime/manga I’d come across, and while I’ve always enjoyed it over the years, I never tire of hearing your input on this series. MHA isn’t my favorite show by any stretch of the imagination, but there are certain things about it that give me a feeling no other show does, and I feel like you do an amazing job of ascertaining those feelings. It’s episodes like this one that remind me why I keep coming back, and why I’ve got a bittersweet feeling knowing there’s only 3 more chapters to release. It’s probably the longest I’ve followed an ongoing piece of media, (other than HxH I guess but it’s hard to call barely 10 chapters a year ongoing) and it’s also the series that introduced me to the channel. I think you were around the big Invisible Girl roast during the room tours when I joined lol. Point being I love this series, despite the very weird fandom and far too many EndeavorxHawks works of fiction out there. I think it can be difficult to nail the overall positive messages this show has in a way that doesn’t feel cheap or contrived, yet MHA pretty consistently nails it in a way I hope to see more of. Rambled a bit here but I haven’t really gotten to express how I feel about this show in a while, and I kinda just kept typing. Can’t wait to get to enjoy the rest of this show!

Honestly, hearing your thoughts on this episode really affirm to me that you would love Naruto. It was Horikoshi’s main inspiration and MHA carries the lifeblood of Naruto. It even has some thematic overlap with Vinland Saga. It’s probably a long shot for this channel, but I just want to give my thoughts.

My apologies, but thank you for the correction. I didn't see your comment when I wrote mine, but good to know

Set your brother ablaze!

Again like I said, apparently Phosphorus can be a flame retardant depending on the compound. White Phosphorus as we all know is the opposite.

Matthew Richson

1. No, do not set your brother ablaze. That's not what that means! Haha 2. I am grateful for Alex putting into words things I'm not sure I've been able to. Yes, there is a great deal of pain and injustice, but so often the discussion stops there, or rather, people intentionally stop the discussion at that point. What do we do in response to that loss? What can / should we do in light of that? That determines whether we become the heroes, the villains, or the extras. I don't know how to get that message to the people who most need to hear it, and even among those in my family I'd want to say that to, I don't think I'm the right messenger, either. I wonder if seeing this series and others on that theme helps or just reinforces their view... It's a tough subject. So.... on a lighter note? 3. Todoroki's new move, "phosphor" (or in Japanese, 'rin' 燐) is probably inspired by the fact that the element phosphorus burns at (what here in North Carolina seems like a cool) 30 degrees Celsius or 86 Fahrenheit. That said, the flames themselves are not cool to the touch, and the smoke is extremely toxic, so... that part's still a little futuristic. 4. Sun-guy's speech was also super creepy and punny in Japanese. (I liked that in the dub they got him calling Dabi "sonny", but yeah it was really terrible in Japanese. Instead of saying -sa at the end of sentences, like "sou da kedo sa" it was -san, as in "sun"...)

Ryan

I also must say, the dub went above and beyond again with this episode, particularly Jason as Dabi. His JP VA set the bar so high, but Jason more than matched that energy here.

I'm telling you it goes deep. Would make a crazy comparison video. Atla is my favorite show all time and Zuko in my top 2 characters all time but I think in a way MHA improves on parts of the Shoto/Zuko story. The mom being just as traumatized by the father's abuse and burning Shoto as a result. Endeavor having a better arc than Ozai and being more redeemable. The mom having to redeem herself as well for what she did. They both are fantastic obviously. Random thought, in some weird way does this make Deku parallel to Iroh for the analogy? Lol

Noah Hoorn

It's a beautiful moment a long time in the making. Invincible 2 is very likely what I'm gonna do first. I'm gonna make a post about the upcoming schedule later this week

Alex G

Man when Shoto talks about class 1A and how supportive they were I get so damn emotional. When he told Deku "thanks for showing the truth its my quirk" I nearly teared up lol. Also not sure what show you plan on watching to replace demon slayer but my votes definitely on Invincible s2 :)

M2GZ

I don't know but it probably involved touching 💀

Alex G

Come to think of it there was even lightening

Alex G

What quirk do you think All Might gave sunny to watch the kids at the school home with?

Noah Hoorn

Oh yeah this was definitely MHA's big Agna Kai

Alex G

I liked how the All Might statue got frozen from Shoto's last move and ended up having half of All might's face burned off, kinda like Shoto and the two sides of Shoto one from his mom, one from his dad. Ice and fire. So many Zuko parallels. And Azula parallels with Dabi for that matter. Kinda like if Zuko was the prodigy instead of Azula, Ursa burning Zuko instead of Ozai but they both still lose their mom, then I guess Azula gets banished instead of Zuko if she's going down Dabi's path. Both end in a badass fight against the broken person using blue flames lol.

Noah Hoorn

Yeah lots of people were creeped out by him.

Matthew Richson

For his limited screen time Mr. Sunny was one of the most terrifying villains for me

Alex G

So there you have it, the origin of Dabi and the culmination of Shoto’s journey. Learning that All for One was the reason he survived in the first place was surprising, but not entirely so. Apparently, phosphorus(which Shoto’s new move is named after), can be both a flame retardant or an accelerant depending on the compound, with the former being what Shoto’s using. And when Toya first escaped the facility, apparently his flames were so weak at the time that no one died during the fire. Garaki quickly covered it up as an accident caused by Mr. Sunny, so his operation was never exposed as a result.
