that trope is always really good when done in a negative way. obviously there are other examples, but something like this was done in Bleach really well.

2024-08-09 03:53:43 +0000 UTCNen is one of the most well written systems ever. Its a manifestation of who the user is down to a subconscious level. The better the user understands nen the more they can get from it. Alot of the time the person manifests a power that speaks to them on a very base lvl. Nen responds best to emotion and there isnt really any higher form of emotion than true rage and anger. If you read the manga which you absolutely should for videos youll get to see Nen of the purest form. We get several examples of its manifestation from a completely subconscious view

2024-08-08 18:25:42 +0000 UTCI love how Pitou falling from the sky had already been established as a vulnerability as well as how one of Ja Jankin’s weaknesses was the long charge up time required of Gon standing still. Both of those being exploited with a big kick to launch Pitou up and then we were smooth sailing.

2024-08-08 16:18:20 +0000 UTCMy favorite comparison to make from reactors is how they view Gon's transformation. I felt that it took the basic shounen trope of power boosted angry characters becoming cool and triumphant and flipped it. You have the Assassin trying to convince the naive goofball to snap out of it. I didn't feel excited to see Gon power up. This series has built the viewer up to this moment of disappointment and heartbreak the moment other characters called him dangerous in the first few episodes. It may be my favorite payoff of a character arc, but in a sad way. Glad I could hear your take on this!

2024-08-08 07:26:03 +0000 UTCI’m glad we got to see nen contracts make a return also I wonder what kurapikas post mortem nen would be like.

2024-08-08 05:45:00 +0000 UTCImportant side fact: Pitou has not seen the changes on meruem, so when she refers to Gon being on par with Meruem, it means that he is on par with pre-nuke Meruem, not post-nuke Meruem (after sucking in Youpi & Pouf‘s Energy) So even in his current form, he is most likely outmatched by current Meruem 🙂

2024-08-08 04:59:08 +0000 UTCMy first synopsis was going to be something about the light from Gon's fist 😅 Cause that's about the only light here. I had totally forgotten that Killua had said Gon was his light
Alex G
2024-08-08 03:57:14 +0000 UTCOh blegh! I forgot the title pun! ikari x to x hikari So, yes, obviously it's a play on Killua's original line calling Gon the "light." The word for light is "hikari." Take off the /h/ and you get "ikari," which means "rage." The order is probably important, too. It's the rage first, since obviously the light that we see at the end of the episode means something quite a bit different than Killua meant many episodes ago.

2024-08-08 03:54:12 +0000 UTCAh, that’s some interesting insight! I was mostly just referring to the translation in the manga since I can’t speak Japanese, but it’s interesting to know the original was also abstract!

2024-08-08 03:37:43 +0000 UTCNen is great. I often hear it praised for its technical depth and consistency but I think a less describable element that is also hitting people is that it's tapped into something about life. I say nen is life, and I'm convinced that's true but also can't fully explain what that means. And so it contains a huge range of possibilities and meaning, not all of which is good and wholesome. It's not, for comparison, the power of friendship or "kingdom hearts is light." So like, yeah of course Gon can use nen to sacrifice his future for some seductive feeling of revenge or power right now. It's terrible but it also makes perfect sense
Alex G
2024-08-08 03:35:43 +0000 UTCGlad I refreshed before I commented, haha! This is what I had originally written: 6:27 I'm not really sure I'd translate Pitou's line that way. Pitou actually says こいつの牙は王にも届き得た "this $&^@ actually could get his fangs to the King." The idea of "fang's making it to [X]" isn't a common expression or any set phrase, so it's just as abstract in Japanese as it is in English. Pitou *might* have meant that as in Gon could have sunk his fangs into the King's neck and killed him, but I'm not sure that equal power is a reasonable jump there.
Ryan
2024-08-08 03:32:53 +0000 UTCI think part of that is because like is shown in this episode, it can basically enable anything if the person involved is willing to sacrifice enough, and that’s terrifying.

2024-08-08 03:31:54 +0000 UTC19:40 The piano music in the background is about half the tempo, but otherwise it's note-for-note the Ending song. My dislike of this Ending actually made that moment even more disturbing when I realized it, haha. The title is "Hyouri ittai" (表裏一体, "two sides of the same coin" (or literally: "front-and-back, single-body").

2024-08-08 03:31:05 +0000 UTCNen has a very spooky, eldrich undertone to its manifestation sometimes. I can't put my feelings towards it into words, but it definitely makes me want to learn more about its origins.

2024-08-08 03:27:30 +0000 UTCYeah, this is pretty much THE Hunter x Hunter episode. There’s an unbelievable amount to unpack, so I won’t be able to hit half of it, but there’s a few things I’d like to talk about. The protagonist having an “ultimate form” of some kind isn’t exactly a new concept, but in classic Hunter fashion it’s so wildly different from what you’d expect. First, when Gon is transforming, he is literally sucking in all the air around him, unlike most power ups where characters will usually exude energy of some kind. There’s also the anime trope of longer hair=more power, which instead of subverting like One Punch Man, they leaned into by just making his hair go off the screen. Some clarifications on some dialogue said during the transformation. Pitou said that his power is now equal to that of the King, while in the manga she said “As I feared, his fangs might even sink into the King!” While the anime translation might not be inaccurate, the manga one makes a little more sense. Gon said “I don’t care if it’s the end, so I’ll use everything.”. The manga clarifies what exactly this means by saying “I need all the power I’ll ever have.”. This is likely the biggest reason Gon gained so much power. It’s like Zero Hand in a sense, though much more potent since unlike Netero, Gon is young and “all the power I’ll ever have” is an unfathomable amount of power. Postmortem Nen is also finally shown, like 70 episodes after Phinks first told us about it. And the music playing during that scene is a piano version of the ending theme. There’s so much more I could get into, but as this is like the number 1 episode people tend to check out when it comes to reactions, I’m sure there'll be plenty of others leaving their thoughts.

2024-08-08 03:27:25 +0000 UTC27:47 "Build Back Worse" - Gon Freecs (circa Chimera Ant Arc)

Alex G
2024-08-08 03:21:16 +0000 UTCIt really is so tragic. The badassery is awesome, but there's also the context as to why it's there; Gon sacrificed decades of his life, his full potential, out of pure despair.

2024-08-08 03:18:20 +0000 UTCI appreciate your acknowledgment of Gon's lack of consideration towards Killua as a friend. It's something he hasn't realized about himself, because of the singular goal oriented mindset he's nurtured. He has some learning to do about friendship.

2024-08-08 03:12:18 +0000 UTCThe emotional build up, the slow moving shots, the bgms and music, this episode would be good enough just story wise but they went 1000% on it, tho is not my favorite episode like most people, is perfectly done! Also this confirm what the spiders say would happen if they kill kurapika, the nen after dead can be even stronger.

2024-08-08 02:54:58 +0000 UTCIt's very upsetting. (But also it's so cool to see Gon as an adult and be that strong 😂) Too bad it's not under better circumstances. Maybe something to imagine for what Gon's future could be... Eventually

2024-08-08 02:53:25 +0000 UTCI always cry so much in this episode. I know a lot of the times people take in the "cool/badass" aspects of the episode, but all I see is tragedy lol. even that moment where he uses his own severed arm to pierce through Pitou makes me cry, cause it feels like adult Gon letting out all of his anger and frustration in a raw manner. Other than that, his anger in his adult form is masked by a lot of stoicism. Also, Killua having to see his best friend tear himself apart is so depressing.

2024-08-08 02:51:12 +0000 UTCnotice when killua jumps to push gon, this is (to my memory) the only time we ever hear his feet make any sort of noise. He was in such a panic, he didn't even bother to silence his footstep, which is at this point second nature to him.
