This is my favorite episode of this show and possibly my favorite in any show period. What an incredible culmination of the themes and character development that have been slowly building throughout this arc.

kingkoopa98

i called from the beginning that the boar will be one of his favorite characters

Chris Sharpe

back when Gon was still the main character? ya...good times...

Anya Mcghee

sidenote: the Chimera Ant Arc is officially 61 episodes long, the same length ATLA.

Chris Sharpe

Komugi feels like the ultimate argument against this arc seemly being purely nihilistic. the only thing she is good at is a gungi, a simple board game that doesn’t even exist in real life. perhaps that aligns with what real Diego said in his quote, humans lifespan makes it where they seek desire, but that can be fulfilled in these simple moments. that is what makes life worthwhile. Edit: also that small scene of Pouf lying dead on the ground, clearly having dragged himself on the ground to get to Meruem just destroyed me.

Chris Sharpe

The way Komugi immediately starts playing again without hesitation when the King tells her that she should leave, it makes me tear up every single time man… to sacrifice her life to stay with him at the end of his… insert narrator - “It was the first time the King had felt true love.” 😆 Also, you’re right - Gon and Meruem’s character arcs are two parallel lines heading in opposite directions that never once intersect

oerwhat

Yeah this is my all time fave ep of HxH, peak fiction

RoZiiii

Even tho gon vs pitou episode is well done and epic, the mereum and komugi scene is my favorite part of the arc, i think it ressonate more with me. I cry everytime, meruem still himself but now he can see what really matters to him, so yeah maybe hxh is the anime that does it better, making gon sometimes the least important char for some time, i mean we don't know what will happen to him but the only thing i am thinking is how mereum will spend his last minutes. Without spoiling anything i like the next arc is fun i like it, but i think the sad part is that imo this episode feels more of a series ending than the end of the next arc.

Sonozaki Shinji

Hey rmb the hunter exam ? Yea those were simpler times

Andre Tan

This is literally my favorite arc of any anime! I definitely cry every time I watch the end. 😭

Israel Blanco

This episode always has me ugly crying lol

JDalsing

My money is on liking the character

I think people like to focus on the negativity that surrounds humanity in this arc. "We are no different from the ants. No, we are far worse." But this arc also shows how the humanity within Meruem is ultimately what saves everyone lol.

I love how Togashi basically shows that names are what make us human, because names are largely tied to our individuality. Before, Netero stated that Meruem was teetering between human and ant. It was only when Netero told Meruem his name that he fully jumped onto the human side. As you may recall, once Netero said his name, Meruem finally felt fear. After this, he was also literally and figuratively reborn. When he shares his name with Komugi, he is already fully embracing that human side of him and it shows.

(also that men in that same era--1100-1600ish--would *make* marriage proposals, but yeah it's from the woman's perspective here)

Ryan

Or hate? Have a strong reaction to.

Ryan

Netflix(?) has this art done by one of the Hunter x Hunter (2011) animators added to the end once the screen goes blank. Idk how most platforms don’t have this. It just feels abrupt without it. https://images.app.goo.gl/KNVRErFEtY6xS5DMA

Manny

"I may not be much, but please, let me accompany you" An interesting bit of trivia/characterization: This line that serves as Komugi choosing to die with Meruem is also phrased in the traditional way that Japanese women accept marriage proposals.

madgod

And here it is. Such an incredible arc. It’s hard to find the words. The scene where it shows the Royal guards faces when Komugi is asking about them always gets me. The first time I saw it, it made me realize how deeply I had come to care about all of them throughout the arc. And obviously the Meruem and Komugi stuff is stunning. It reaches into that place that shows like Vinland and Haikyuu reach to, where it feels nearly transcendent. And I also love the scene with Diego on the porch. The fact that Togashi can recontextualize Diego as a character, from an evil dictator who only served to give Meruem a castle, to a contemplative man who gives one of the most important monologues of the arc is just insane to me. Obv he was a body double so it wasn’t “him” but it still serves the same purpose imo. I’m so excited for the next ep, and the next arc. While the Chimera Ant arc is absolutely immaculate, the next arc gives me things that are different, but equally important imo. Think you’ll love it.

Vali Sippola

That would be the most HxH thing I could imagine

Alex G

The Hunter Exam will never end.

Alter Nate

I have nothing else to add to this episode. It's truly perfect, and I really appreciate that Diego has just been chilling in a rocking chair with a beer for 40 years. He's the real winner of the arc lol As for the next arc, it suffers from the same thing that Greed Island did, where it comes right after something incredible. But you specifically will really love it. I've been looking forward to your reaction for it since some comments you made near the beginning of this arc. That being said, in true HxH fashion, there's absolutely no way you can guess anything really about the next arc lmao Looking forward to the end! What a sentence to say!

Sunny

What if I told you that the real Hunter exam hasn’t even begun yet?

Joey Healy

The king of the ants and a blind girl playing a tabletop game made me recover my faith in humanity. We are all born to conquer the world, but also we could be born to enjoy the happiness that is being in this exact moment, not alone, but with the connections we made by being humans, capable of good and evil. Now prepare yourself for ****POLITICS****

José Sebastian Rebolledo

Pouf being a devastating final punctuation mark on a season of huge things happening unceremoniously. But this time it's different. It's sad but not horrifying. I still feel happy for him somehow

Alex G

"Am I... Am I allowed to be so happy? Can so many wonderful things happen to someone like me?" says the girl born missing one of her senses in one of the most corrupt nations in the world. Komugi is such a pure character. Impossibly humble while also being impossibly talented. No wonder she had the impact that she did on the king.

Plasma Lemon

This is the episode that permanently altered my brain chemistry lmao. Certain shows before Hunter x Hunter made me tear up a bit every now and then, but this episode genuinely had me bawling my eyes out. I still tear up to this day when rewatching it through reactions like yours. Such incredible storytelling

Pye

I'm kinda excited for the reaction of the next arc cuz I feel like Alex is really going to like the Rat for whatever reason

Anya Mcghee

Remember when Meruem would say that he would not repeat himself, and then at the very end he repeats himself constantly to check on Komugi. Yeah, I’m not okay. I knew Diego’s bit would lead to a long discussion lol. I remember you discussing something to that point earlier in the arc as well. Also, the “Next time on!” jumpscare never gets old. I’ve been trying to think of more to say, but this episode tends to leave me speechless. Plus, I’ve yapped enough throughout this series, and I feel like I’ve said my main thoughts across the recent episodes. Just a beautifully tragic episode altogether. As incredible as this arc is, I’m so glad the anime didn’t end here. While the remaining episodes are obviously not going to be “The Chimera Ant Arc 2”, I feel like they do an incredible job given the time we have left. The manga just happens to have a perfect stopping point, which is fortunate for the anime given that the next arc is unfinished.

Oak

"She reversed my reversal!?" -Meruem when talking about gungi, but actually talking about Netero still managing to win after Meruem survived a nuke lol

Sunny

Ah man... I've watched this ep probably 5 or more times and haven't made it through with dry eyes. The, "Komugi, are you still here?" kills me every time, I take it as Meruem is going blind from radiation poisoning and wants consolation that he is still with Komugi. That shot of Palm nearly weeping as the camera pans into her forehead orb vision of Meruem and Komugi... Same Palm, same. This arc, and ep especially, captures something more beautiful that words can describe.

Sam B

In most shounen, the MC gets a power-up that makes you believe they can overcome the villain or obstacle they're facing. Naruto rocks up in Konoha in Sage Mode for the first time, or Goku going super saiyan in front of Freiza. But here, Gon turns into a monster and disregards his best friend to kill his enemy. Meanwhile Meruem spends his final solemn moments with the person that means the most to him.

Lofi Tech

It’s such a beautifully fitting end for Pouf. The most flamboyant, sparkly and visually magnificent royal guard met his end in the most pathetic, forgotten, and lonely way. Alone in the middle of a field of mindless people that he created. I love that for him. Anyway, this episode is beyond beautiful and my favorite of all Hunter x Hunter. The King was a magnificent character, and I loved his growth. For all this arcs talk of humanity being terrible, it was the human aspects of Meruem that made him and his relationship with Komugi so beautiful. The supreme being’s last wish was to spend his final moments doing the thing he loved with the one he loved most; what a far cry from his introduction of birthing himself into the world, and the subsequent violence he displayed.

Alter Nate

Bittersweet tears. This episode is very good on rewatch as well. Some of my more favorite moments: 2:12 Meruem, whose tagline is 二度言わすな, "don't make me repeat myself," tells Palm he will tell her that humanity has won as many times as it takes to get her to reveal Komugi's location. 23:10, Komugi was going to explain how she figured out a way to make kokiriko work, but nope. Never did, haha. The title, (kono-hi x to x kono-shunkan) is actually "this day x and x this moment," but there's a play with "kono-hi to" (this day and) vs "kono-hito" (this person). That's why they translated it that second way. 30:05 Komugi calls Meruem by his name with no honorific. (Right before that, they had her subtitled as saying "you're welcome" to Meruem's thank you, but that's not what she said. She said "kochira koso", which is like, "no, thank *you*")

Ryan

Wow finally.
