Subaru's breakdown in this ep is one of the most painfully relatable things ive ever watched in any animes, it is so relevant to some stuff I've been dealing with lately. Pushing myself way beyond my limits and hating myself for not doing better, hating myself so much... pushing my emotions aside for so long to the point where they fester for so long and are a constant weight on my mind. Always feeling like I'm not trying hard enough when I'm trying my hardest. And then when people show me kindness and support, it just makes me hate myself even more because I feel like I shouldn't have to rely on them in the first place. I should be better in the first place. Why am I not better? I have no excuse not to be better. If I don't become better, all of the kindness and support of others will have been wasted. Thoughts like these... Watching this ep for the first time (1 or 2 weeks ago), it was very cathartic, it made me feel less alone, less isolated with these feelings that I feel. The VA and artistic direction of how that breakdown was adapted/animated are both amazing

I think of the first half of Re:Zero this is probably my favorite episode. Subaru's walls finally break-down and his interactions start to gain some small sense of authenticity, rather than this farcical persona that he falls into so easily. I think it's really interesting how there's such a significant divide between Subaru's outward-facing interactions and his internal monologue. Subaru in his own head is quite analytical, methodical and authentic - whereas the character he presents to the world is this boisterous, living in the moment, exaggerated parody of himself. The moments where those two halves meet is in the few times we actually see Subaru have genuine interactions with people imo. It's going to be really interesting to see how you interpret Subaru going forward I think.

Guys only want one thing and it's f'ing wholesome. You mentioned something about Emilia in the previous, or previous to that, episode. She's being presented like the ultimate ideal, for some reason. Subaru is pining over her so much "Oh Emilia you so great, so beautiful, so kind so.." Clearly lovebombing ridiculousness. And the thing is, they haven't done almost anything. She saved him from the street urchins in another timeline and they helped a lost child. THAT'S it, basically. After that the viewer is being told that Emilia is a goddess and we should die over and over just to get a whiff of her, or something. I'm sorry, but I'm more interested in a romance that makes logical sense (and she doesn't see him romantically either by the way).

Thank you!

Also I do agree that he's closest with Beako at this point because she handles his yapping the best lol

The lap pillow scene has completely wired me into being a thighs guy lol. On a more serious note I agree that up until this part his breakdown was his healthiest moment because of him being honest and just getting to vent. Love your evaluation of Subaru so far and I am excited to watch the ride that is his character.

Let’s go. I love this ep a lot. Great observations and thoughts as usual. Subarus breakdown here is one of my fav parts of this early part in the story. The song that plays over the scene of his breakdown is called “Boys Dream” and it’s sung by the VA of Emilia. Speaking of her, I love how unabashedly kind she is. It’s her best trait, and her greatest flaw. Also love Beatrice, any scene with her is just lovely. Her speech patterns, her dynamic with Subaru, it’s all great.

Loving your observations! I'm going to repost one of my comments on last episode in case you didn't see it: There are two OVAs coming up: OVA1 - Memory Snow OVA2 - The Frozen Bond Both are canon, and OVA2 is very important for the plot. OVA1 can either be watched right after episode 11 (director's cut episode 6) where it serves as a good break in the tension, or both of them can be watched one after the other at the end of season 1.

Yeah I'm planning on watching consecutively until I finish season 3

As much as it doesn't seem like it. Subaru is a very real character. Which means you aren't going to like him all the time, but his growth latter is extremely satisfying. Also season 3 started today. Started slow but got very interesting toward the end of the episode. Are you going to do season 3 also?
