Not gonna spoil the future stuff in this show in the comments, but it’s very much a deconstruction. And it’s very important to the story imo. And it will remain important through the entire story. The MCs “genre-savviness” informs his expectations, those expectations are destroyed and interrogated, and are rebuilt from there.

Vali Sippola

I wouldn't call this a deconstruction, the MC is just a bit genre-savvy. It's not even that important to the story other than a couple comedy/lampshading moments in the very first episodes.

Also found the whole interaction between Subaru and getting Rem to admit to him that she has indeed been keeping an eye on him due to Roswaal's orders to be quite endearing and satisfying. It feels rewarding because it takes a certain amount of mutual trust for him to be able to get Rem to be frank with him on her received orders. It was pretty neat that after getting to that point and actually have something to be glad for despite the ongoing crisis surrounding the kids of the village, Subaru turned Rem's confession around and jokingly used it to further convince her to join him on his mission in order to keep an eye on him. But Rem's response was even better, in which she nodded after pondering and agreed to continue keeping a close watch on him -- basically her excuse for lending him her strength on his selfless mission. That, to me, is the last and biggest proof of Rem's turned around evaluation of Subaru in this sequence, where her newfound trust in him is quite literally like you said -- the best run Subaru has had so far. He really cleared a major hurdle right here, and the fact that it's due to his own undisguised genuineness this time around is something I think Subaru can be proud of. Looking forward to the next one!

Also, I don't know if you skip the ending songs or just don't post it here for copyright reasons -- but the ending for this episode of the Director's Cut is an acoustic version of the usual one. And if whatever platform you're watching it on offers subtitles for the lyrics, you might wanna check it out again. It serves pretty much as a voice for some of Subaru's inner thoughts and fear of death even despite his power to redo. Out of all the looping troupes across different anime, Subaru is perhaps the single most cautious MC about relying on it. It's like he said to Beatrice this episode, he's really, REALLY terrified of death, and can never get used to it no matter how many times he experiences it. It humanizes him a lot IMO and speaks to a lot of the emotional weight on this series.

Really thoughtful and enjoyable reaction/analysis, the AoT callback got me nostalgic... thanks again!

(Little overwhelmed with work, so writing this sloppily during dinner, but) two quick things: 1) The whole "living gregariously" thing is just a somewhat quirky translation of 群生している, that they roam around in huge packs in the forests. Basically, unprotected forests in this world are wildly unsafe. 2) Subaru's phrase at 20:20 is an interesting pun. Normally it's kami-gakatteiru, basically having the gods/kami on your side. He says oni-gakatteieru, having the demon/oni on his side. He says it as a good thing, presumably not knowing at that time how much that particular wording would mean to Rem.

Subaru gets eaten, Rem kicks ass, and Roswaal flys off into the sunset.

They did for a few episodes in S1, but most of the eps in S2 are 28-30 minutes long due to the studio straight up buying out ad time because they want this story to have a great adaptation. It’s clearly a passion project for everyone involved.

Vali Sippola

They actually skip a lot of the credits and openings to have more time for story. They even bought out ad time during the original airing on some episodes. Can't remember which episodes or season.

Love the aot reference. Your insight on characters is refreshing.

Thanks! I think this should be alright, just seems like I miss some end credits this way

I actually own the versions released prior to the directors cut if you would like to watch them
