2024-10-11 11:30:17 +0000 UTCIt's hard to accept the love people have for you when you want so desperately to believe the worst about yourself and to believe the best about others. It's so much easier to believe that they're just showing care/support toward you out of some sense of obligation or responsibility, when believing such a thing would better conform with your own perspective. It's a difficult situation, when people who love each other feel like they're letting each other down and they just accept that and feel like they're not good enough and end up putting themselves through suffering as a result. I look forward to seeing your thoughts on some future eps

2024-10-11 04:57:27 +0000 UTCIt was a passing comment, but I REALLY appreciated you mentioning not beating yourself up over having occasional dark thoughts. Unsure how related it is, but growing up in religious circles I was often told that even so much as thinking / considering doing something considered a "sin" was a sin in itself. This kind of thought policing is harmful, and can even lead to the opposite result as people attempt to repress it and inevitably find some other outlet.

2024-10-10 15:51:55 +0000 UTCIt doesn't make sense (the town turning on Rem) because we see the villagers' burning corpses. We don't know who the assailants are, but we are shown the dead onis.

2024-10-10 06:58:06 +0000 UTCThe anime did cut out a lot of the technical information on the magic and worldbuilding in this show, which made Ram’s scene with Roswaal more weird than it needed to be. Ram losing her horn meant that she had a poor mana pool to cast magic and low stamina, on top of her constant migraines as explained by another comment you’ve read — which is what led to her giving out halfway through slaughtering the ulgarms with Subaru. Her lack of horn also meant that she can’t take in mana from her environment, and would actually die if Roswaal wasn’t there to provide her with mana from his hands to the hornless gap on her forehead on a regular basis. Beyond that, Ram’s dynamic with Roswaal obviously hasn’t been explained yet. But the novels did make it clear that Roswaal was the one who saved the twin from the slaughter of their village by Witch Cultists, hence Rem’s extreme disdain for the witch’s scent and what she meant when she was going ham on Subaru, accusing him of being associated with the ones that caused Ram so much pain. That somewhat serves as an explanation for Ram’s devotion to Roswaal, but is still meant to be taken as only a fraction of the whole picture as Rem doesn’t seem to show the same level of reverence for Roswaal so far. Funny enough, Roswaal was both late to saving the oni village (their clan got wiped out bar the twins) AND this whole ulgarm incident to an extent. Also, I actually love the choice of words when Subaru told Rem to lose her grim face and laugh. I believe the whole key to her character was that she always felt too guilty to truly laugh from the bottom of her heart. You can see this from the way she keeps a poker face when Subaru first arrived at the mansion, in comparison to Ram who despite also treating Subaru like a stranger — is able to put on different expressions, including looking smug and snorting. Rem is the type of person you find in life that’s always too uptight, who might grin here and there but never laugh from the bottom of her heart. The only difference here is that her reason came from trauma and guilt. Subaru’s reminder for her to put down her shackles and weights from the past and be able to laugh at the small things of tomorrow, is not only to get her to take it slow one step at-a-time, but also to look forward to her future with a genuine smile. And this is where the scene ends with the animators dumping all of their budget on Rem’s first genuine, happy, unreserved smile as if she was granted salvation — which she did in that moment. A decade of guilt is beginning to be lifted off a single promise from an ordinary Boy to face their futures together, laughing at the tomorrows that’s yet to come. That’s the sort of magic that’s happening this episode :D Thanks for the reactions again, looking forward to the next one!

2024-10-10 04:05:03 +0000 UTCThis is my first time watching too and I didn't know what to make of it, but the town turning on Rem made sense. I see though that the robed guys aren't the townsfolk, it was such a fast flashback. Definitely feel better knowing Ram didn't murder all her friends and family.

2024-10-10 03:44:22 +0000 UTCLoved your thoughts, love this ep. Really well directed, voice acted, and the music is great as always. And Rem and Rams relationship is really complicated, loved hearing your thoughts on all the layers. And even though we haven’t gotten Rams full perspective on the matter, some of her rougher edges now have more context. A little cut content from the novels, but you can infer it just by watching the show, Rams missing horn basically makes it so she’s in pain a lot of the time, and obviously her personality reflects that. She’s basically a victim to extreme migraines every day. There is an OVA that canonically takes place in between this ep and the next, as other comments have mentioned. Excited for the next eps. Ep 13 and beyond is where I truly fell in love with this story, so I’m excited to hear your thoughts.

2024-10-10 03:25:38 +0000 UTCDefinitely optional but next director cut episode is an OVA that fits right in-between the first and second half of this season. Honestly I would highly recommend watching it cuz it includes some actually really clever forshadowing and also some of the last lighthearted moments the story is gonna have for a whiiiile. If not tho u can just skip to the next one.

2024-10-10 02:21:28 +0000 UTCBit of a strange reading on that. The guys in the cloaks are an outside force attacking the village and the village wasn't in on it and they have been named before. Ram cannot use fire magic and she was trying to defend the village.
