I'm a bit late with this comment, but: In the case of OPM, it wasn't a case of the studio assigning less budget or anything like that. Season 2 was sinply done by a different studio and different director. The team that did season 1 for studio Madhouse was kind of an impromptu group of freelancers and industry veterans from other studios drawn together by a well-connected director who was pulling in favours from across the industry to put together something that was much higher quality than its budget would suggest. It was one of those cases where the stars aligned. Even if they had got the same director, same studio and same budget for season 2, it probably wouldn't have been as good as season 1. But instead they had a completely different team on it from a different studio that wasn't known for its action anime. I think that by the time they were looking for studios to do season 2, the director for season 1 was at a different studio and both the original director and original studio were busy with other projects.

This episode makes me feel bad for Saitama. He and Boros are similar in that they both just want a good fight that makes them feel something. Saitama's waiting to wrap it up feels kinda like it's of a dual purpose. First, it's because villains tend to keep ramping up, and Saitama wants to see if it ever actually gets challenging, so he waits for the opponent to get to peak. Second, I like to think it's a sort of acknowledgement that he's giving Boros exactly what he wishes someone could give him, and he respects that. There's that part where Saitama says "blah blah blah... are you done?" with this almost sad look on his face. There's the shot of Saitama walking away with his face half shaded as Boros says "you were just... too strong." I could just taste the bitterness in that look. A victory for the greater good. A job nobody else could do. Yet, he felt nothing.

Been stressed out by uni the past couple of weeks, but was nice to catch up on your OPM reactions. I watched this show when I was 12 or 13 years old, rewatching it now, I'm surprised by the emotional core that the show has. Although Saitama struggles from having too much power, for some reason I identify with him from the position of someone that has nowhere near enough power in the things that I desire in life. Maybe it's a reflection of what I'd be if I actually had everything I wanted, or maybe it's the fact that on either side of the spectrum you feel hollow, and that the middle is what you should aim for. Although, from a humanist perspective, the suffering Saitama feels is worth it for the amount of lives that he is capable of saving.

I like season 2 a lot. As others have said, the animation quality noticeably drops, which is really unfortunate. It's still very entertaining imo, but it makes my heart hurt that we'll never get to see it be animated in the way it deserves. I constantly struggle to understand how studios fumble stuff like that. OPM season 1 made a bajillion dollars, and somehow the response from the studio was "oh cool, let's reduce the animation budget!" and expected it to still be a huge hit.

Yeah if you really want to get in the weeds of it, saitamas first punch only embedded Boros in a pillar but one of boros punches launched saitama through multiple, so it can be inferred that he was punch stronger than the normal punch Also meteoric burst I think surprised saitama with that sudden speed and I’m not really sure what to make of that.

I think it was confirmed that Saitama could feel Boros' hits. He was stronger by a good margin but he felt them for the 1st time in years.

It’s a short season, but at least you don’t have to wait 4 years for season 2 like we did πŸ˜†

I'm looking forward to Season 2. I think most people would agree that the production overall is definitely lacking compared to Season 1, however, it was never a massive detriment for me, and I personally like quite a lot of the Season 2 content more than some of the Season 1 stuff.

It will be interesting to compare the two when all is said and done

This reminds me a bit of "Welcome to demon school Irumakun" where a big focus to the show is ambitions and what it means to have one. In it the show makes a point that ideals can't substitute ambitions. An ambition is something tangible that you can go towards, while an ideal is how you want things to be/stay. I think with Saitama he wants a challenge, but that's an ideal. What he needs is an ambition going forward.

Hunter x Hunter mentioned. Time to go back to thinking about it until next week’s chapter.

While I did watch One Punch Man before Mob, it really is interesting to see ONE’s approach to evolving some of the ideas put forth here. I did properly start reading OPM now, and I just passed the point where the anime leaves off for the moment. (Season 3 is in the works, but we don’t really know much else right now) While Mob is over, the good news is ONE’s still writing OPM, and has been for a while. I’m looking forward to seeing what he has to offer with OPM now that he’s had more experience as a writer thanks to Mob.

I’m excited for your season 2 reaction. I feel like there’ll be more for you to talk about because the world opens up a bit more. This first season is just a tip of this world, and really focuses on saitama and genos. One punch man however actually really shines in its ensemble and that starts more in season 2 I feel.

This fight always reminds me of Meruem vs Netero with all the pillars and insane speed
