Re: Zero 1x7 (OG 12 & 13) Reaction Extended (YT link below)

In Re: Zero 1x7, Self-Proclaimed Knight Natsuki Subaru, Subaru hasn't faced return by death for a while but after the events at the capital, it's starting to look more appealing.

I'm so glad I decided to watch this anime for the first time by watching your reactions, because for the whole episode the music was quite happy and upbeat and I was getting this impression that we were meant to root for Subaru's overstepping so I would have dropped the anime halfway through the ep if I didn't see that you also agreed with me. I'm very happy to see that the ending to the ep was exactly what *should* happen

Shaggy

I agree, that was an oversight on my part. I should’ve still revealed the info later under the newer episode, though, as you’ll never get any indication from the anime that the actual thing Julius saved him from was execution. It’s all very vague and shallowly portrayed but I apologized for forgetting that scene in the anime and jumping the gun on when to inform him of the cut content 🙏 Thank you guys for your inputs and patience!!

Hailan

I appreciate it. The new episode he just posted shares what you did about Julius in the first 2 minutes, right after Alex talks about your comment's revelations, so our reasoning about the director's cut revealing "left out" stuff in later episodes showed to be true right off the bat.

Sam B

They just did something that makes it impossible to reveal in the main series

Nathan Jarrett

There are things from the novels they’ve revealed out of order already after cutting it from S1. It’s better to just not reveal novel content to people watching the show

Steve.

It's not. In fact they just did something which makes it so they can no longer reveal it in the main series. They hid it away in a breaktime short.

Nathan Jarrett

See I would be inclined to agree if the author, Tappei himself, didn’t go around writing a whole essay worth of text on Twitter after the airing of every single Re0 episode just to talk about his favorite moments ALONGSIDE any content that didn’t made it into the adaptation… IMHO you guys are giving the adaptation too much credit on trying to create this alternative narrative that makes just as much sense as the source material — when in reality they’re cutting stuff just to fit the story into 20min episodes. This isn’t a case like, say, Attack on Titan — where the adaptation was so incredibly faithful for the majority of its story and characters that Isayama himself expressed that he believed the anime to be the “completed” version of AoT. But in contrast, I would say that the Re0 anime suffered quite a bit of limitations from the adaptation in not just the story, but characterizations of its characters as a whole. Though, if you check some of my comments under previous episodes — you’ll notice that I don’t actually even talk about cut content at all outside of maybe like Subaru’s inner monologues. It’s not like I don’t understand your specific points, but more of finding it hard to be onboard with staying silent when misinterpretations are made as a result of such severe losses of characterization due to missing pages. For Alex to ignore this would have to mean that he’ll be losing out on a lot of the depth and nuance of the characters and events in the story, which he expressed before that it’s one of the most engaging elements in a show for him. But at the end of the day, I do understand you guys’ points on wanting to seeing his unadulterated reactions during the processes of clearing up any misunderstandings he had on different characters, even if they’re artificially created by flaws in the adaptation. So I’ll be keeping that in mind and try to steer clear of any cut content that alludes to upcoming events or revelations, in the future episodes 👍

Hailan

If you're so perfect, why don't you fit my vision of perfection, HUH?

Sam B

I agree with Gus here, even though it cuts parts out, subtext in future episodes is sure to reveal a lot of what was removed. And Alex and those watching are with it enough to pick up on that subtext, and that impactfulness is disturbed by your revelations. I haven't seen or read any of this yet, but I trust the director's cut to provide necessary context at its own pace. Another comment "spoiled" something in the same way you have Hailan, and I'd appreciate watching/learning at the pace of the show.

Sam B

I imagine it was cut for a reason and would be revealed more clearly later, this seems like a spoiler even though I put two and two together by his comment about Subaru seeing death multiple times, and by him understanding the "Tan" suffix.

Sam B

Same

Ryan

What is it with anime and every cat-girl saying nyow. edit. cat boys too apparently

Perchik

You're missing the point, even if the author intended for Julius's motivations to be completely clear at this point, the author never intended for the watcher to learn about his motivations from randoms in the comment section of a youtube video. There is cut content, simply state that there is a lot of cut content and direct people to read the novels if they want to know what it is. ANY piece of content that is cut could come back around in a future episode, maybe even in season 3 or 4 or 5. There's no way to tell what cut content the anime will choose to include that far into the future, therefore NONE of it should be revealed early until the anime is done airing the final arc of the story. Is it so hard to only discuss what has happened so far?

Gus N

Again, this “initial reaction” and “sub-sequential theorizing” wasn’t supposed to exist in the first place because the story intended for you to know that Julius isn’t self-serving at this exact point in the story — which is right after the duel. Your placed expectations are on something that I would argue is “inorganic” in this case, and has the potential to give room for misinterpretation and complete misunderstanding because he would be viewing Julius through tinted lenses, perhaps going as far to denounce him as an egoistic, small minded person (which he more than led into this episode during the duel), off a complete failure on the adaptation’s part. This isn’t about what you and I prefer, but simply that the author intended the story to convey Julius’s innocence vs Subaru under guilty light in the clearest manner possible at this point of the story. I get that you feel an attachment to the version of the story which you’re familiar with, but it’s less that the anime is adopting an “alternate storytelling” but more so that it’s “missing pages”. That’s why you see some of the other comments also explaining cut content, it’s quite literally just filling in the missing pages that the author intended for you to know.

Hailan

Speaking generally: Just because something is cut content doesn't mean that revealing it isn't spoiling. In this case, revealing that information directly spoils that line in the following way: Now he will already know what it's talking about and will probably say something like "so this was explained to me by a comment ..." instead of asking something like "So was Julius actually playing the villain when he beat up Subaru?". That initial reaction and any subsequent theorizing on it are now completely changed from what it originally would have been without that information, which is literally the definition of a spoiler.

Gus N

I’d be more than happy to oblige if it were actually spoilers as I detest those novel readers that spoil future events for anime onlies. But in this case it’s not remotely spoiling because it’s cut content. I assume you haven’t read the novels but the Julius admitting his motives aftermath scene is quite literally right after their duel happened. You’re alluding his future dialogues that’s uncut from the anime that comes off as obscure precisely because they didn’t adapt any of Julius’s characterization scenes during this episode. You won’t be getting his true “organic reactions” if he’s reacting to an obscurity that only comes as a result of a failure on the adaptation’s part. This isn’t a “oh but the anime just went a different direction as a separate version of the story”, this just the average cut content missing details experience. Which is normal for light novel series adaptations because they’re adjusting for the disparity in the attention span needed to watch an episode vs reading half a novel. But I apologize for letting you down…

Hailan

Can you please try not to spoil? There is dialogue in a later episode that alludes to Julius's motives. It would've been nice to see his organic thoughts on that line instead of it just being spelled out for him. Thank you.

Gus N

Second hand embarrassment gets me every time with this show 😭

Russie ♡ Russell Bumpers

'Yes. He is a knight. Felix Argyle.' "Ohhh. Oh, so it's a cat-boy joining our harem." ... Goodwin, continuing to be in perfect stride with the show.

7thdilemma

Did you ever continue? I know I dropped here once as well, its definitely worth watching more.

Gus N

"People who have experienced death", yeah, he obviously doesn't mean people who died, more like people who have experience with death, i.e. soldiers etc 10:15 "A lot of people in Subaru's situation would try to guilt trip" That's what happens when you become TOO genre- and trope-savvy. Anime becomes kind of boring. Emilia answering the question as if it's a beauty pageant. Unless I am misremembering, THIS Emilia didn't save him. It was Reinhardt.

Arakis

Man oh man, I am so eagerly waiting for more ReZero uploadss

Sheru

Hyped for more

Goldy

Loved the outro as it's Emilia's va singing it, unfortunately this is where I dropped the show years ago as I couldn't handle the humiliation

Laggy

As a novel reader, I'd always be happy to help you with supplemental material. Be careful though, Re:Zero novel readers are VERY bad when it comes to spoiling anime onlies and stuff. I work on fan translating the web novel, so I'm constantly exposed to it. Although you're community has always been pretty good. I've been watching on and off for years and your comment section rarely annoys me lol.

Kieran

There is some major cut content with Al here that I think you need to know for your analysisAl is from Japan, like Subaru. He has episodic memory loss, and has been in this world for 18 years. That's part of the reason he's so friendly to Subaru. This should have been covered in the conversation in the carriage.

Nathan Jarrett

Easily the best analysis of this episode and Subaru's actions I've seen from a reactor. A lot of reactors just blindly hate him here rather than trying to understand him. Having a MC be this flawed turns a lot of people away unfortunately. Your analysis of Subaru at the end was extremely refreshing as it was actually trying to understand his perspective and understand why he is so obsessed with Emilia. Obviously an extreme low point but I think it was necessary for Subaru's future.

Kimats0548

I don't remember if the anime ever mentions it (not I have the time right now to watch the episode, I'll have to do that later) but a non-spoiler detail is that the cloak you see Emilia wearing, the one with the ears, is, if I remember correctly, a magic cloak that hides/changes the wearer's appearance. They could've depicted this in the anime, I guess, but it's one of those "Imagine that the characters don't see this the way we show it to you", something like Madoka's Withes' labyrinths. It's because people are distrustful of female half-elves (are there even any elves or half-elves other than Emilia in that world??) with white hair.

Arakis

Haha yeah. Speaking of a story like AOT, within the realm of “flawed protagonists” Subaru occupys a really unique place. Unlike a character like Eren, Thorfinn, etc. Subarus flaws don’t come from revenge, excessive violence or extremism, And those characters are still allowed to be “cool” or “badass” (love both of those characters btw) Or other characters who are deemed more “pure” but have self esteem issues, like Mob or Tohru. His flaws are that he can be petty, belligerent, offensive, overbearing, disrespectful, he has an extreme lack of self esteem, etc. while also having a really loving and honest heart. But when it comes to your average viewer, they’re way more willing to accept a protagonist who literally murders people over the one who is embarrassing and off-putting, and people drop the show. I think Subaru is just a really confronting, complex, and realistic character in ways that not many other characters are, and some people find that hard to reckon with. Not saying that’s wrong to feel that way, I just find it interesting what people are willing to tolerate or defend when it comes to character flaws.

Vali Sippola

I was joking to a friend after watching this episode that maybe it's going to be similar to Attack on Titan where you're trying to support the protagonist by virtue of him occupying the protagonist spot, only to be faced with some hard decisions, so it's funny (?) to hear that this part of the story causes people to drop it out of disappoinment.

Alex G

Ah that's too bad, I'd love to see exactly that kind of thing from characters. Maybe I can try to supplement the anime after the fact

Alex G

Funnily enough on your comment about all of the candidates only getting a single sentence to explain what they're about, the anime had to unfortunately cut down their speeches a lot in order to fit everything into a single episode. You definitely get a lot more of a feel for who the candidates are, what they stand for, and why their knight stands with them in the novels, but such is the nature of adapting a novel series (and a seriously long one at that. These episodes are part of volume 7, and there are currently 39 volumes in the series with plenty more still to come).

Kieran

And as an aside, this ep is a confronting mirror toward the genre in a lot of ways. Especially when it comes to its treatment of the world and women. A lot of ppl watched Re: Zero back in the day expecting a new escapist fantasy to insert into, and were greeted with this. Tappei (the author) has said that the argument between Emilia and Subaru in the bedroom was one of his favorite parts of the anime adaptation and one of his favorite things to write in the novels.

Vali Sippola

For some cut content, there’s a few things. All of the Royal Selection candidates political views and plans are wayyy expanded upon in the novels, but you get the gist of them in this ep. Emilia’s in particular though is centered around the liberation of demi-human and non-humans in the country, who are oppressed in a multitude of ways. You’ll notice that that whole hall of nobles were all human.

Vali Sippola

Here we are. Absolutely adore these episodes. These 2 episodes are actually a major reason that a lot of people drop this show. The illusion is shattered, and a lot of people really don’t like that. All of Subarus worst traits and insecurities are made bare to see. His misogynistic tendencies, his inability to respect the autonomy of others, and his clear lack of self love and worth that all explode when he comes into contact with “the world.” It’s devastating, it’s heartbreaking, and there’s a catharsis as well. There’s so much nuance in all the characters that clash into each other this episode. And how Return by Death plays into this is amazing. While it is a function of the narrative, a reset, it is also Subarus trauma. His inability to tell someone what is going on with him. In real life it can feel impossible to open up if your mental health is really suffering. But for Subaru, he literally cannot tell anyone. It’s a tragedy of biblical levels. And yet, he’s still in the wrong. This episode was kind of a wake up call for me in a lot of ways, and caused a lot of self reflection for n my part. Julius is one of my favorite characters in this entire story, excited that you’ve been introduced to him now. I loved all your thoughts this episode, and I’m super excited for the next ones.

Vali Sippola

This is amazing, thank you. The bit about Julius especially is an absolute game changer.

Alex G

I'm really happy Subaru hasn't completely turned you off from the story and you can tell he's not meant to be "in the right". I am super excited to see your next episode reaction. It's probably my favorite episode of anything. Like, ever.

Starky

I can definitely say I relate 100% to the relief you said you got from this episode seeing that Subaru's actions were, in fact, not shown in a good light! And if I may, there were 3 major things you missed this episode, with one of them being due to the anime adaptation cutting a crucial cutscene. The first one is the cut of Roswaal's exaggerated evil grin when Subaru crashed out in front of everyone and yelled at the Council of Wise Men. The second one is Subaru pretending to trip during his "fight" with Julius, only to pick up sand on the ground and throw it at his face in an attempt to blind him. This plus his later usage of Shamac, both trying to blind his opponent in a men's duel, is what led to Julius telling him that he truly has no pride as a man. The third thing is an absolutely critical one, and is completely on the anime's fault for cutting the aftermath. Essentially, Julius SAVED Subaru from public execution by the other knights. He didn't challenge Subaru to a fight for the sake of his fragile ego, at all. The Knights of Lugunica is a prestige and office that's beyond serious and well-earned, essentially everyone in it is somewhat of an hero that's committed some incredibly glorious deeds. For Subaru to undermine that as an ignorant outsider was actually punishable by execution within the kingdom, due to their cultural reverence for the knights. Julius was confronted by Felix and Marcos (the leader of the knights) later in his office, in which he was called a softy & "too nice" by Felix for merely giving Subaru a beating by wooden swords and letting him off the hook. Julius also admitted to Marcos that he thought Subaru's ugliness as merely being a sign of being completely lost in life, and therefore wanted to save him from execution. This meaning is completely lost in the anime, and can only be inferred by the watcher if they consider Julius's class to be above simply wanting to give Subaru a beating for his ego. Julius's class can be seen through his repeated mention of Subaru "not having a good look" in his actions and words, along with the way he told Subaru that resorting to underhandedness won't get him anywhere in life. This is also why Anastasia -- the royal candidate -- told Emilia that if Julius is the one that started the fight, then they don't have to worry about anything because Julius won't go too far, and he's likely doing this in Subaru's interest anyways. A pretty neat thing the anime was able to do was its portrayal of Subaru's ugliness in scenes such as his fight with Julius and his crashout with Emilia. The animators intentionally drew Subaru in the most ugly facial expressions possible, that he's ever had up till this point, to show the inner ugliness deep within him that's being reflected on the surface. If you rewatch the duel he had with Julius, you'd see that it wasn't just the bruisers and swollen face he had that was making him look ugly -- the look in his eyes and his crooked grin when he thought his little tricks worked were all indicators of how far gone he was. I've always thought stuff like this were pretty cool across anime, and off the top of my head could recall Light Yagami from Death Note receiving essentially the same treatment in the final episode, when the cat was out of the bag and he admitted to his sins. Another nice detail in this episode was that we as the audience could kinda sympathize with Subaru in that he's unable to explain to the Emilia of this timeline that his obsession and devotion to her was sparked by her saving him from the hoodlums in the first ever loop of the story. His Return By Death meant that the current Emilia never recalled saving him, ever, and also prevents him from telling her about the past versions of her that he's met. But the amazing part of this dynamic is that we also know that this isn't the whole story. Subaru can only be partially vindicated by his misfortune, because there is so much more beyond that, that he did wrong, that led to this outcome. It may look like he's just getting f'd over by his power, but below the surface that couldn't be further away from the truth of why things are not working out. Beyond that, this episode marks the start of Arc 3 in the novels, titled Return to the Royal Capital Arc. This is also the arc where the anime has made the most cuts compared to the novels, more so than in any of the other arcs adapted up to the currently airing Season 3. The worldbuilding is barely passable on a first watch in the anime, but is essentially dead compared to the novel. This episode had basically all character interactions and events OUTSIDE of Subaru's personally character journey -- completely removed. Without reading the novels, you wouldn't be able to tell from the royal candidates' actions alone that they've each gone through enough to essentially rival Season 3 Eren from AoT prior to the selection. I think it's alright, though. The anime is essentially strictly a character study of Subaru and the Emilia Camp in the Royal Selection. It closely traces Subaru and all his developments, but forfeits adapting the complex worldbuilding of the Re:Zero verse that IMO honestly more than rivals One Piece's. The minimally adapted lore of Lugunica is also just about enough to keep you going, at the very least. There's a lot to look forward to in the upcoming episodes, as it'll essentially be the first look you'll really get on the level of writing this story has to offer, and what type of story it tries to tell. Thanks for the amazing reactions, again, and I can't wait for next week :D

Hailan

Despite being ripped apart, beaten, mana drained, this is definitely the worst thing that Subaru has been put through, being forced to confront his flaws at the hands of the person he loves. I really like the line where Emilia comments on how the real Emilia and the version of Emilia that's in Subaru's head are different. At this point, I think Subaru can only see himself. Despite having "Hero" moments previously, he still has a lot of things to deal with.

Jordan

The second half of this episode, Subaru's lap breakdown, and the Rem / Ram backstory have been my favorite parts so far I think

Alex G

I'm really glad, I could be wrong but it seems your enjoyment really went up with this episode. I don't know if you have ever played tales of the abyss but Subaru reminds me of Luke fon Fabre. Really just hard to get through and tolerate at the beginning but just extremely good growth in the end.

Its so interesting watching this reaction, bcs is coming together with the airing of season 3. I will not elaborate to evitate spoilers but its such a good written show in retrospect
