Yeah, that's my one problem with the episode. They made Sad Man's Parade look really ineffective. Like, it looks impressive and scary and overwhelming from afar, but when you close in, it doesn't really seem like they are doing anything? Toga seems to be the only armed one, all the Twices just seem to have measuring tape and to at most hold the heroes down? When I read it in the Manga I was under the impression that the heroes were being stampeded, trampled to death, buried under an avalanche, brutalized by the Twices ganging up on them, but it doesn't really come across like that here. I guess maybe that's the point? A sign that Toga's heart isn't really in it, but given what she did to Ochako, I don't really believe that. But aside from that it's a great episode, for me personally this is the greatest emotional high of S7. I really like how Toga's voice changes, that's a great touch you just can't have in a Manga. And I love it as a culmination of Ochako's character arc, it's beautiful and poignant, she's come such a long way! I always tear up!

2024-11-01 02:41:11 +0000 UTCI am reminded of the time Tanjiro got stabbed and wanted to survive so the guy who stabbed him wouldn't be a murderer.

2024-10-24 04:35:53 +0000 UTCalso wanted to add to the discussion that we have seen a blood based quirk related hero! vlad king, class b's homeroom teacher can control / harden / soften blood (i think just his own but quirk definitions get funky), kind of a shame there wasn't much play with any toga / vlad king interaction but in an alternate timeline toga could've gotten support from him on how to control those urges / express them in a more healthy manner instead.

2024-10-23 11:08:33 +0000 UTCAbsolutely. I think the literal blood drinking is the least important element of the whole thing, it's just a side thought 😂

2024-10-23 06:24:19 +0000 UTCI know you're kinda hung up on the blood thing, but that's probably the most manageable part of Toga's whole deal. Like... people give blood in the real world. We have the means to do it safely. She could have gotten it through the government, if they'd be willing to subsidize it (the MHA world does subsidize some quirk needs). Her parents could have drawn their own blood and stored it for when she needed it. Heck, the first blood she drank was from an animal, this whole thing could have been avoided if her parents had gone to a butcher and bought some pigs blood. And there are definitely some people who would be willing to share their blood with her - I mean, hypothetically, if Toga and Deku met in middle school and she said "Hey I can drink peoples blood and turn into them" do you think he would have said "that's creepy never talk to me again" or "wow that's awesome can you show me right now if I give you my blood?" Toga became a killer because she was denied her needs, but blood doesn't have to mean violence.

2024-10-23 05:01:09 +0000 UTCThank you! 😊 Doing this has radically changed my life in so many ways. Episodes like this leave me thinking about them for weeks haha

2024-10-23 04:23:43 +0000 UTCYeah I think that’s still a very valid stance. I do think hopefully the culmination of their interactions in the finale may give more insight / context to how Toga could have expressed herself in a healthier way and if not I’m more than happy to share my interpretation of that aspect in more detail! Also, side note: always appreciate your reactions and discussion like this. Your content, insight, analysis and shared personal experience is _supremely_ valuable to me in helping me become the best, most authentic version of myself. Hope creating it is doing the same for you 🫶

2024-10-23 04:14:35 +0000 UTCI know it’s a bit hard to understand, I admittedly struggle with it at times. It didn’t really click for me until this climax.

2024-10-23 03:47:49 +0000 UTCi am glad i have been fortunate in that regard. you can generally tackle hardship with the right mentality, but oftentimes it can be difficult to develop that mentality when in the thick of it. for most with my conditions who didn’t grow up like me, it’s like living in a boxing ring, having to learn to fight without being able to leave. i’m glad for the ability to step out of the ring for a few minutes to breathe and having people to help me, even if i still need to step back in.

2024-10-23 03:23:40 +0000 UTCAs I said, the unfortunate thing is there aren't that many [Urarakas] in the world. And this is how things spiral for people who initially had a lot of potential and could have been perfectly content in stable in any element of society they chose. It's something like... As they pick up defense mechanisms and counterproductive behaviors to protect them from negative treatment from the world (or simply get older without learning positive ones), they become increasingly harder to engage with for people who are enjoying their lives stably and comfortably. That screens and selects for people who are going to feed their issues or even target them for them.

2024-10-23 03:16:43 +0000 UTCYeah I think their performances were elevated far beyond "dub acting"

2024-10-23 03:07:59 +0000 UTCFor some reason this made me think of Netero and now I'm laughing to myself imagining his er... solution to Toga
Alex G
2024-10-23 03:07:13 +0000 UTCThis interpretation makes a lot of sense and seems to be one of the most common real-life ways viewers relate to Toga (judging from comments). The specific element I'm still struggling with somewhat about the blood stuff is the fact that it seems damaging to others. Toga wants blood and that's her nature but... while she has a right to be who she is and have the natural feelings she has, that doesn't give her the right to other people's blood. That very literal issue aside, it works very well for a host of relatable life experiences, and very generally just for the struggle of feeling like you have to hide a natural part of yourself for fear of punishment

2024-10-23 03:05:15 +0000 UTCalso common theme in my hero that applies to this is that sweeping things under the rug often results in terrible consequences long term. my behavioral therapist told me a story i’ll never forget. when she started, she expected to be working with autistic children, and was surprised when she was brought to an asylum where she saw full grown, lower functioning autistic men. the thing was they could have lived easier lives if given the proper education, but instead, they were thrown into an asylum when they were young and had no life skills and no way to manage their tendencies in their 20s, 30s, even their 40s (often hurting the nurses during their meltdowns with their strength). it really shows the strength of the characters in the show. in this story, they could have done the equivalent of going to work with cute kids instead, but if they wanted to do good, they would have to face the ugly results that have piled up like my therapist did.

2024-10-23 03:00:48 +0000 UTCi forget exactly what it’s called, but Toga i believe was designed around a movement in japan wanting greater awareness and expression of mental health and sexuality. the symbol of the movement was a box cutter, a weapon toga often used. there are others that can talk about the sexuality allegory (toga not loving people in the “proper” way), but i have a lot to say about the latter, particularly neurodivergence. i am autistic and have adhd, and while i had a privileged upbringing and had resources for that (while also being diagnosed early), i still had difficulties and many others had it worse. Toga’s situation is almost a perfect allegory for neurodivergence. kids today are more likely to be diagnosed for the same reason more people are left-handed (if you know, you know). for adhd for example, kids with it can often act “badly behaved” and are treated as such. they can often be punished or even beaten by their parents for things they cannot control, often forcing them to repress their traits (resulting in the parents being satisfied that they “grew out of it”). and the same is usually true for other conditions. this trait is referred to as “masking”, a very real thing like with toga. and it doesn’t make it go away and can lead to terrible issues growing up. it takes a lot of mental energy, it makes one lose their sense of self, cripple one’s sense of self-worth, and the worst part is that it usually still doesn’t work perfectly, working well enough to “pass”, but not actually make connections or actually be seen as normal. that is how you get people diagnosed as grown adults, and sometimes even parents diagnosed at the same time as their children, which is usually followed by immense waves of different emotions as one’s entire life is put into context.

2024-10-23 02:53:10 +0000 UTCI’m typically a sub watcher, so my only exposure to the English dub is your videos, and I must say, the VAs for Toga and Ochaco absolutely killed it here. Amazing delivery.

2024-10-23 02:10:54 +0000 UTCI relate to toga here a lot. i think she's a parallel to different kinds of love that exists in the world. I think a lot of queer people can relate to her here. When love is suppressed it can lash out in unhealthy ways. what toga needed was someone who understood her way of love and to accept her the way she is and i think ochaco gave that to her here.

2024-10-23 02:00:43 +0000 UTCI mean there’s no doubt about it, her experiences are allegorical to how LGBT & Neurodivergent individuals get treated in conservative settings and what that eventually leads to.

2024-10-23 01:57:05 +0000 UTCI think some real life parallels with Toga’s childhood are folks that may have a non-normative sexual preference or gender identity, etc., especially because of how it’s tied to her sense of love. As someone who grew up in the south United States, I know plenty of folks who had internalized self-loathing as a result of having to live a closeted life, hiding what feels natural to them in order to keep others in society around them comfortable. I know that’s not how she responded, but they seem like potential directions from a common origin to me.

2024-10-23 01:55:05 +0000 UTCI'm pretty sure my interpretatio doesn't mach the text of the episode/chapter and the character of toga ( at the very least not with a one to one correlation) but i always saw toga's struggles relatable to me as a lgbt person although with a much exagerated reality and in togas case very gruesome problem, but the feeling of being not considered normal, of feeling like you are disappoting society and your parents, the feeling that even if i found a community that understood me and my identity that i didn't really had a choice i would still be full of anger and sadness, it's a really powerful arc for her and uraraka and i cry everytime i watch it. ( Sorry for the yapping, great video as always <3)

2024-10-23 01:28:31 +0000 UTCI definitely remember having my expectations exceeded both for these manga chapters but also for many of their anime adaptations so far.

2024-10-23 01:28:28 +0000 UTCGoing into this part of the story, not a lot of fans had high hopes for this climax. But when these chapters dropped, fans were for the most part blown away. And emotionally destroyed as well. This episode just further elevated the source material, helped that IIRC, the director of the fourth movie did this episode. Which explains its quality. Furthermore, voice actors on both sides knocked it out of the park. Ochaco’s Japanese VA was in tears recording this episode.

2024-10-23 01:24:48 +0000 UTCthis is my fave episode of the season ! to me this is heroism at its core - to get stabbed by someone and still show that much empathy - that's who we need as heroes in the next generation. the score for her quirk awakening was so beautiful too, a new ost with the old motifs. btw ! Uraraka used to only be able to lift 3 tons (only lol) but if we do the maths for this and conservatively say there were 100k twice clones (weighing 40kg each) she hit 4400 tons of lifting (and nonconservatively it looks like millions upon millions of clones so she probably can lift mountains at this point). tbh shes right up there in the top 3-4 range (excluding deku) in terms of feats in class A. so happy to see a strong girl
