Re: Zero 1x8 Reaction Extended (YT link below)

In Re: Zero 1x8, The Sickness Called Despair & The Outside of Madness, nothing can hurt worse than the emotional pain of embarrassing yourself in front of your crush, right?

Ah, positively shouted out, just to be clear

Baddy

I'm not gonna say why or what exactly, but I actually screamed out load around minute 4, because of something he said — If you know you'll know

Baddy

Damn Beetlegoose is annoying

Perchik

I have never gotten past this episode but if I had to guess i'd say that monster is puck no? All the snow and i'm sure that was the same VA, sounded like it anyway.

Nicely said. That makes me think once again about what came to mind during the first episode of people traveling and mixing up their situations in an attempt to "reinvent themselves." It can be helpful as a way to find new experiences and challenges (and to leave behind problems that AREN'T about you) but ultimately it will still come down to your ability to respond to those challenges and grow as a person if there's any long term hope of that being effective.

Alex G

The people's opinion is understandable as is, I just don't like it.

Alex G

No worries! Thanks for the great breakdown and analysis :D No brute forcing a solution was to be found in this episode, unfortunately (or fortunately) for Subaru. Curious to see how in the hell you even begin to reflect on and approach a solution to this most recent iteration.

Alex G

The episode that originally got me hooked.

The one thing about the insane ramblings of Re:Zero villains is that they conceal a nugget of truth… somewhere…. very very deep down… probably But seriously, what I love about this arc is that the Emilia fallout can’t be undone. Any remaining illusion that this would be a power fantasy is utterly shattered. The true curse of Return by Death is becoming clear: no matter how many times Subaru travels back, he will always be himself. That is the one thing he can’t escape This story, like all of the greats, is a powerful tool for self reflection. Which is part of why I think that Emilia fight is so divisive. Many people, especially male viewers I’m sure, can identify a bit too much with Subaru, and so his humbling hurts all the more

Steve.

He had asked to train with Wilhelm before when they first met and he notice that his eyes have seen death before.

You've watched the show so far, seen Subaru's simping for Emilia... and you say "at least Rem is infatuated"? lol. You're commenting about the racism against half-elves. Would your opinion change if there was only 1 half-elf in the world? We haven't been told otherwise so far, haven't seen any elves or half-elves? Wouldn't the people's opinion be much more understandable if the only half-elf in the setting is Emilia? No, it's clear that Subaru was acting the crazy. And he stopped when he got angry. Emilia-who?

Arakis

Welcome to Re:NegativeOne as we explore how things somehow managed to get even worse for Natsuki Subaru :D I first wanna apologize for supplementing you on the Julius stuff last week somewhat preemptively when it would've made more sense to do it under this week's episode. I completely forgot that, albeit vaguely, the anime did reference Julius's intentions a little this episode. It was a complete oversight on my part and I'll try my best to not to allude to anything that might be mentioned in future episodes or serve as spoilers. That aside, the brilliance of this episode largely lies with its portrayal of Subaru's doubling down, and how he get punished for it even at his lowest point by something that's entirely out of his control. This is the first episode in the whole show where we're really introduced to a powerful antagonistic force (other than Subaru himself), even by the world's standards. The episodes leading up to this were all hyperfixations on Subaru's inner struggles as he tries to navigate this new world, but his time has now ran out with the arrival of an insurmountable enemy. I thought it was cool that you brought up how maybe Subaru should consider redoing all of this from the start, since his fight with Emilia is highkey worse than all the physical threats he faced up till this point. Essentially every watcher of this show probably considered that at some point, but the neat thing is how the author addresses this convenient way out. Part of the beauty of Re0 is that the author, Tappei, makes it intentionally clear that Subaru's power serves more of a way for him to overcome the indescribable, downright unfair obstacles that comes his way -- but it will never, ever be used as a way to reset his mistakes that came as a result of his immaturity and character flaws. His fight with Emilia is something that should not be reset, for his own good -- as this is a responsibility that he has to own up to, a cross that himself has to carry. Re0 doesn't feel cheap precisely because it doesn't attempt to let Subaru overcome things, at the cost of hindering his own development as a human being. This episode is a despair heavy one, but while the obstacles that came his way were all things out of Subaru's control -- it is safe to say that he himself didn't do a single thing right throughout the whole 60 minutes, either. From swordfighting with Wilhelm to make himself feel better since he's "working hard" (which Ferris called him out for to Crusch), to the break down of his conversation with Reinhard simply because he couldn't stand Rein pointing out the truth of his fight with Julius being "utterly pointless" as it humiliated him to think so, and to him taking Crusch's evening advice the complete wrong way to the point of spiraling down the path of doubling down -- he literally failed at every corner where he could've made a decision towards that steep redemption path. Just like you said, this is a very real thing. People are usually faced with two options after they get beat down to the ground: to either learn from their mistakes or double down on it out of bitterness, hoping for different results since the problem has to lie with those around them, right? Subaru chose the latter without hesitation, which meant that all these loops are doomed to fail from the very start. “Isn’t he doing the exact same thing as before?” is such a great comment because the answer is a definitive yes. He hasn’t changed at his core, and so neither will the outcome change. Tappei refuses to let Subaru progress, until he changes himself from the within. Though credit to Subaru, this whole situation is beyond soul crushing. To force this level of mental damage on top of the inner turmoil within your MC, all to spell out that the path the redemption is steep — is just so gripping to watch unfold. Rem was also nothing short of amazing this episode, her selfless love is the perfect antithesis to Subaru's currently confused and decently selfish love for Emilia. You can say she definitely "redeemed herself" for her mass simping in the Memory Snow OVA (lol), not because she likes Subaru any less — but because she’s willing to back it up with action that puts his wellbeing first, even if it meant making Subaru hate her for leaving him behind in the lodging stop. The writing for this episode is incredibly coherent, with essentially everyone pointing out Subaru's mistake in escapism that's clear as day, but he just chooses to ignore it. We're getting to the point that even Betelgeuse is judging him for the impurity of his "insanity", because underneath the reality of the trauma that corroded him, there is also mixed feeling of escapism that's ultimately the reason for his "mindbreak" and disconnection from the world. This episode could be summed up in telling Subaru that there is no escape from his past sins, and that he needs to face it head-on and take responsibility before he can ever hope to progress. I'll leave you with 3 details in this episode that I found pretty neat, thanks for the reaction again and I'm looking forward to the next! 1. Crusch realizing that Subaru's self-indulgent grin after their conversation and mumbling to himself on how there's something only he can do -- likely meant he took her advice the wrong way. Which is why she hesitated a bit before glancing outside, saying that "the wind is picking up" and "it looks like the weather will be rough again tomorrow" -- foreshadowing that Subaru "ain't saving nothing" like you said. But even if she didn't mean it that way, the author definitely knew what he was doing with the ominous omen. 2. The part where he got his fingers froze off was referenced in the Memory Snow OVA, where Subaru had the exact flinching reaction after touching the doorknob to Emilia's room and realizing it was freezing (because she was hiding Puck's manastruation). 3. Wilhelm commented that he and Subaru should discontinue their training because it's clear that Subaru no longer swordfights him with the intention of improving the morning after his conversation with Crusch, showing that his mind is not on self-improvement at that point, but merely to try to brute force things into his favor with his Return By Death because this is "something only he can do".

The ending sequence is incredible, it reminds me of old Ghibli, like something out of Mononoke (certain frames from that movie haunt me to this day). I was thinking later, we are seeing a totally different reaction to Subaru now from others, one small one that became more interesting to me as I thought about it is the carriage driver who seems repulsed by him. That's a far cry from where we started

These episodes are really just masterfully put together. That credit roll is one of the most iconic in all of anime. I love how in these episodes, Subaru just straight up doubles down. His path and growth has never been linear, but it’s especially clear now that it’s not. And I also love how Subaru is contrasted against all the other characters present. Especially the men that surround him. Reinhard, Julius, Wilhelm, Felis, etc. Re: Zero as a story and the author are very intentional with exploring, analyzing, and breaking gender roles, as well as exploring gender identity, and the series dives into that even more as it goes on. And we finally get introduced to Petelgeuse. We’ve had mercenaries like Elsa and Demon Beasts, but now the real first antagonist is introduced. Re: Zero has an absolutely incredible antagonist cast, and it’s kind of incredible that it starts with one as memorable and horrifying as Petelgeuse. I’m also really glad you payed attention to his words, because despite his madness, he is saying important things. A lot of reactors get really swept up in the horror (understandable) and don’t analyze what he actually says. Love. Love is the key to this entire story, as it is for life as well. He’s a really fascinating character and an excellent foil for Subaru. Great thoughts as always, excited for the next episodes.

Mostly it would be a place for the community to gather together. We only really have youtube and patreon comments, which are very siloed. Like, I'm only interested in a handful of shows you've watched. Other people are the same, but for other shows, we would basically never interact at all unless it was on a discord or something similar. It would be useful for other stuff too like community events and stuff, announcements, whatever. I'm in a few other reactor's discord servers where I've seen your videos shared and I know that plenty of people would be interested in jumping in if you made one. Just making the server itself is simple but I'm not exactly sure what it would take to setup and manage it well either. It's kinda like, you can make it as complex as you want, or not. You'd probably at least need some moderators and stuff though.

Lol it's just modern Korean apartment aesthetic. Apartment space us limited so they're all small rooms and have white walls for neutrality or something. I'm gonna try to figure out a better background for this new place eventually.

Alex G

I was thinking later, was he training so that he could go back and try to win against Julius?

Alex G

Yeah I do want to see more of his outlook, the definition of sloth doesn't seem to be lying around or not using energy. So yeah failure or not filling the gap between reality and potential to the maximum, a crazy standard that would basically make everyone deserving of death

Alex G

I know it's been the case for a few uploads, so I'm a little late to say this, but.... are you taking "modern gulag" style a bit to an extreme? It honestly looks like the corner of a 70s brutalist commune, or perhaps a college dorm (same, same?). Are you okay? Haha

Ryan

It used to get requested a lot and I've considered it at multiple points. Coincidentally I've been thinking about it again recently. I'm just not a big discord user myself outside of a few group chats with friends so I'm not super clear on what it would be for, what it would look like, what it would take, etc

Alex G

Ahhh, episode 15 is still as good as I remember it. I watched this when it was airing in 2016, so I would've been around 13 and I bawled my eyes out at this episode. Although I didn't truly fall in love with and understand Re:Zero until I revisited it in 2020 for season 2. Some notes for this episode: There is technically a mistranslation in that Betelgeuse's name is actually "Petelgeuse". One thing I've always found interesting about Petelgeuse is his definition of Sloth. He talks about how ground dragons are the embodiment of diligence, and that by killing a ground dragon his followers too are diligent. But then he goes onto say that "A dead ground dragon is the definition of Sloth." We see this again when he says to Rem that she was a fellow believer in love, but since her love had nowhere to go and she died, she was slothful. His definition doesn't seem to be about not trying to do something, but rather trying to do something, and then failing. Is it because if you fail at something then you didn't try hard enough to be successful? Or is the very concept of failure synonymous with Sloth in his mind? It's a cool interpretation of Sloth as opposed to "They're just super lazy lol." Hope you enjoyed the episode, can't wait for the next reaction!

Kieran

The show really starts kicking into a new gear with this arc. When you said that the emotional heartache of the break-up could be worse then the physical i was thinking "you sweet summer child" lol. Probably my favorite episode in all of anime is coming up, super hyped for your reaction. Also, when Wilhelm Said he had given up on being stronger it was when Subaru had decided to use return by death and had given up on that life.

Douglas Davis

Have you ever considered making a discord?

Gus N

Hmm could that monster at the end be responsible for all that snow?

bl0odm1st

I've had this song in my playlist for years and never knew it was from Re: Zero until just now
