Re: Zero 3x9 Reaction Extended (YT link below)

In Re: Zero 3x9, City Scramble, Re: Zero takes a breather to have an entire episode of Priscilla getting topless because.. well I'm sure she has a good reason.

He also just walked into some room and picked up a Metia on some personal side mission it seems

Two things 1. Fitting how the Sin of Gluttony has multiple arch bishops. How glutinous that they couldn't just have 1. 2. Not my full Al theory right now but interesting things to note. 1 his princess doesn't fully trust him. 2. She knows he lies about things to her maybe even plots without her. 3. Al has been quiet these past few meetings after that speech with Subaru. Mostly just observing and barely talking. 4. It's interesting out of all the characters in this team Al has been off screen at random points the longest. Note that he was one of the first people to mention the past about the witches body but how he talked about it was like he was there when the witch died or overly familiar with it. He also knows about the 10 people who know where her remains are. Curious how the city floods and randomly 9 of the 10 are killed while Al keeps disappearing off screen during these times. I'm not saying it's Al who did said things or if he's been doing other things on his own but he does have suspiciously deep knowledge.

Really amazing that you dove deep into Gluttony's entrance and noted some of the hints towards his character. So far, I'd say he's been one of the lesser explored Sins, and the only way to really appreciate his character might just be to remember the dialogue between Subaru and the Witch of Gluttony (Daphne) in S2. Gluttony's hatred for merchants was peculiar, and there is information later that adds more to this dynamic (even if the anime cut out a lot of it). I'll be sure to type a comment on it when we get there! And no, you're not the only one who was glad that Regulus didn't get blitzed by Reinhard's hacks. Also thought it was hilarious that you looked up Regulus's name, I wouldn't have thought of researching such a REGULAR name. Plus, that'd be an invasion of his privacy, an infringement of his rights, even!

Super glad you pointed this out. Regulus's narcissism and selfishness is sooooooo reminiscent of Arc 3 Subaru in the Royal Capital, they're great parallels of each other except that Regulus actually had the power to prevent himself from getting humbled and corrected.

She intended to fight her way out if the conversation breaks down, the anime just chose a weird direction in portraying her as helpless. The ice daggers you saw her use this episode? In the novels, she materialized them out of her hands as soon as Regulus lunged at her...

- Tiny, inconsequential language note: the word "gluttony" is typically just translated as 'boushoku,' 暴食 (violent-eating), but the Gluttony in the green clothing keeps insisting on calling it by a fuller name, "bouin-boushoku," 暴飲 暴食 (violent-drinking, violent-eating), just so we know that he's including beverages. - This is from last episode, but I forgot last time. In fairness to Emilia, I think that part of her "plan" might have been to confront Regulus in front of everyone with the idea that we're trying to convince the wives to abandon him. Not a great plan, but I think that might have been the intent.

Interesting conversation about the Sins at the end, and I think you hit the nail on the head in that they often have some fundamental kernel of truth in them, but then make a mistake along the way that completely twists that true basis into a destructive, self-defeating habit. And that is what makes them sins. One could refer to the Seven Heavenly Virtues to see that there is a counter to the sins, virtues built from the same basis that are used for construction. Probably in a similar vein, once could look at the Middle Path in Buddhism, but I confess that I don't know a lot about the belief system. I think it's also interesting to then think about how Subaru parallels the sins throughout the story. In Arc 3 he refuses to stop and reflect on himself for a long time, causing him to spiral, and considering he faces off against Sloth in this Arc, I think it's fair to say that here he faces Sloth. His image as Rem's Hero helps him to stop being slothful, and to never give up. But then in Arc 4, this along with the loss of Rem feeds into his sin of Greed, of wanting to take all of the burdens upon himself and facing all of the obstacles by himself, robbing people of his agency due to his Greed for a future where everyone is happy (even if that comes at the exclusion of himself, something that he may or may no consciously pursue). In that same Arc, we then see that Subaru does not become less Greedy, but instead his Greed takes on a more positive role. He is Greedy because he wants to save everyone and make his way to a happy future without sacrificing his own happiness, and thus he learns to lean on others. In Arc 5, he is far more virtuous, he relies on his friends, fights for his ideal ending, and doesn't give up, thus catapaulting him even further into his herodom, something that Al seems fundamentally opposed to. The Sins and Virtues are a very interesting lens through which to view the story, so I'm glad that you're really engaging with them. It also helps that though on the surface the Archbishops appear to be generic insane villains, it's in the details of their foul, nonsensical rants that a lot of interesting stuff can be found. Regulus being the epitome of this, where he's so twisted that he will spout contradictory sentences one after the other, and it's in that contradictions where a lot of interesting stuff can be found. Glad you enjoyed the episode.

Oh and as a final fun-fact, you mentioned Otto being the secret protagonist. Tappei, the author, has actually said who would be the protagonist of Re: Zero if we weren’t following Subaru. I’ll save it for a few eps from now, but it’s not who you’d expect.

Re: Peak time! This episode is action packed, and has a ton of stuff to talk about. Priscilla is hot. That’s all. And her “battle dress” is just great looking. I also like the contrast between Priscilla and Anastasia in that scene like you mentioned. I absolutely love the design of Garf’s opponent, Eight Arms Kurgan. He exudes this aura, I don’t know how to describe it. Also yeah, Therasia not being a full on corpse might be worse. It’s a true specter of the past come to haunt Wihelm. I absolutely love all the Regulus stuff. It’s another example of his complete detachment from his own actions, calling Subaru and Reinhard wife murderers. I also find it really interesting when he says “Death always comes far too quickly. Did you die satisfied?” It’s something to keep in mind for the next few episodes. I also love that you decided to look up Regulus’ name. Like you have no idea how cool that was to see. The wife who’s been tending to Emilia says something along these lines earlier in the season. “He truly is a little king.” And I also was super happy to hear the discussion around relationships, and being owed things in the context of Regulus as a character. Especially when Subaru in S1 was saying things like “You owe a greater debt than you can ever repay.” It draws a line between Regulus and Subaru, but also Regulus and us the viewer. Like you’ve brought up, all the sins, with their extremes and insanity, have real truth buried beneath it all. Also more Reinhard being superhuman. As a quick thing about the lore of the world and magic system in Re: Zero, there is a force called Od Lagna that resides at the core of the Re: Zero world. It’s kinda like a sun in a way. It grants divine protections/magic seemingly at random to people around the world, but Reinhard seems to be uniquely blessed. Also love what you had to say about Gluttony. It’s interesting, usually gluttony is portrayed as all consuming and ravenous, usually large or fat, but both gluttonies here are small and skinny, with Lye professing the importance of preparation and pleasure. His hatred of merchants as well is really interesting, and I’ll just say that after the little bit we got to see here, you are going to absolutely love Gluttony when they get full focus. And Garf is still being haunted by Elsa. Him saying that fighting is all he can do stuck out to me. It’s sad. Also love the faith Emilia and Subaru have in each other. It’s super heartwarming, after all they’ve been through. Also Reinhard abs. The most fan service we’ve ever gotten in Re: Zero in one episode. And honestly who better than Priscilla and Reinhard. Awesome thoughts as always, I’m so excited for next week. It’s gonna be awesome.
