[sounds of thunder in the distance] *moves around to get comfortable* Mmmm Wha-what? *notices listener is shaking in fear*
Hey, buddy what’s going on? [breif pause] Come on you can tell me. [brief pause] Outside? What’s wrong with outside? Did you see someone outside in the rain?? [brief pause] ‘It’s scary?’ What’s scary? [brief pause] Ohhh the thunder? You’re scared of the thunder? Well, why is that? [breif pause] Oh really? What happened when you were little? [brief pause] Hmmm yeah eight years old was my first time with thunder and lightning too. [brief pause] Awww no, nobody was around to comfort you, aww man that sucks. Well here, let me show you a way to feel safe in the comfort of your bed and your home. Do you want to know something really cool? Did you know that your chances of being struck by lightning are 1 in 1.2 million? That’s a pretty low chance that you’ll be struck. And besides, you’re indoors. You have a roof over your head and you’re under your comfy blankets. Here, let me come up there and we can talk with the blankets over our heads. [sounds of blankets moving]
Alright buddy, hey before we start, do you want me to go downstairs to my kitchen and bring you some chocolate milk? I would make hot cocoa, but, we ran out last week. [brief pause] Alright I’ll be right back. [longer pause] Alright, I’m back, here you go, drink up. [brief pause] ahh good right? Okay, so let me just get under our blanket fort here [blanket noises] Okay, I’m about to tell you a story that my grandma told me to help with my fear of lighting.
It was around my eighth going into ninth birthday. It was about a day or two before the actual day. Then, that’s when we had that major thunderstorm. Well, I was hiding in my room actually in the closet. My mom had been calling me for dinner. She knocked on my door and apparently I was crying in my closet. She came inside and saw me and kneeled and hugged me. I told her I was afraid the lightning was going to get me because in the cartoons, electricity or lighting always made the cartoon characters turn into ashes. Granted I should’ve known it was for play and not saying that if you got struck, you would turn into a pile of ashes with lips haha.
Anyways, she helped me out of the closet and sat me down. She ended up bringing my dinner to my room and she made me some hot cocoa. She made me chicken and some corn. As I was eating, she rubbed my back telling me that lightning is part of nature. Now, being 8 years old, my mom didn’t want to explain to me the science behind lightning on how it’s static in the air and heat and it needs to be released and so forth. She told me the kid-friendly version. She told me that the storms were the gods having fun. She told me that the rain is them having a water gun fight and playing in the sprinklers. Then the lightning was them taking pictures and the thunder was them falling down from laughter. That cheered me up quite nicely.
She then rubbed and scratched my back, and reminded me that I will always be safe indoors. As long as I stay cuddled up in my bed with Speedy, our old German shepherd, that nothing bad would ever happen to me. And from that moment on, I knew that I would always be safe as long as remembered that. When the thunder and lightning and thunder got further away, my mom told me that they were moving away to share their fun with everyone else and I wouldn’t have to listen to it for the rest of the night or day.
I know it may be weird to think of it that way because of how old we are, but I guess you can think of it as just nature’s noises. I mean maybe you could think of it as nature taking a selfie? Hahaha and then the thunder is nature having a bitch fit because they couldn’t get the right angles? [brief pause] hahaha and yeah, maybe the rain is them crying because they aren’t getting the number of likes they want on….Mother Nature or something haha.
See there’s a smile! See, I promise you, everything will be okay. Just remember what I said and I promise you that everything will be okay. I promise. Now, just close your eyes and go to sleep. Soon, you’ll be able to fall asleep to thunder, lightning, and the rain. Then, your fear will be a thing of a past. Alright, best buddy? Hmmm, I love you too buddy!
