[In the Vampire's mansion. It takes place the next night]

Oh, are you awake already? Did you sleep well? You looked so peaceful while you slept. Sorry. I don't want you to think badly of me. You just slept a very long time. I guess you must have gotten very tired when I was feeding on you yesterday. You slept all day. I couldn't wake you up at all. You slept hard as a dead man. Have you had a dream? You do not remember? It is a pity. What? Why am I asking this when I can control your dreams? Well, where I come from, there's a certain superstition that what you dream in the place where you sleep for the first time will come true. This event is too special, I don't want to control it. It only happens once. What? *laughs* It doesn't work like a dream book. This is a very individual matter. Only you are able to create your own dictionary of dream meanings. Different people perceive each dream differently. Dreams are a mirror of reality. A very crooked mirror. Because in the real world you are with other people who think and feel. However, in a dream you are alone - completely alone. Just like after death. And even if you meet other people - they are like shells, empty forms - they are unable to decide for themselves, they submit to control. Sorry, you must be bored of this. And I guess I shouldn't be telling you about that. There are secrets that he only reveals to loved ones, there are secrets that are only told to friends, and there are secrets that you take to the grave with you, even when you are already dead. *laughs* I'm sorry, I have a bit of a dark humor today. I'm sorry about that. I don't want you to be afraid. Quite the opposite! I want you to be safe and happy. I have something for you. I brought some clothes. I noticed you wear them a lot so you must like them a lot. I also have breakfast for you. I mean, I have food. I don't know if a human meal at night can be called breakfast. Hope it's tasty. I haven't cooked for a long time, so I was able to get out of practice. You prefer to eat at home? [brief pause]

What? *laughs* I don't want to poison you. I love you, I don't want to hurt you. If you eat, then I'll walk you back to your house, okay? Do you like it? Yes? I'm glad. How are you? You may be a little weak. Please drink this. This should help. It's cranberry juice. It has a lot of vitamins, you will feel better. Drink to the last drop, please. Why are you behaving like that? I do not understand this. You don't trust me? You told me yesterday you wanted to be my friend. Please trust me. I do not lie. Why are you sad? Smile, you are safe with me. I have something else for you. Please, this is a bouquet of poppies. I ripped them off while you were asleep. They grow in the garden on my property. I know you like black and red. The purple of the petals, bloody and fiery, interwoven with a pattern of spots as black as night. You know, these flowers have a special meaning to me. They have remarkable power. Where I come from, these flowers connect the spheres of the sacred and the profane, they connect the world of the living and the dead. They allow you to cross the border between these worlds. The poppy seed is a symbol of the resurrection. Look at me. I died, but I live. I resurrected like Christ. Although some people do not like it. They consider me damned, they call me the filthy of this world, the possessed, or even the very evil incarnate, the devil. But I am not condemned, I am not cursed. As I was before I died, this is what I am now. I live though I have died. I am holy - my body has not decayed. I am not a ghost as you can see. I'm standing here in front of you. Undead, yet deceased. *laughs* [brief pause] Red poppies with their stigma black, who gave you colors and strange power? Are you the seed of heaven or the seed of hell that Satan once sowed in the dark night? *laughs* The poppy seeds were supposed to neutralize me. I remember centuries ago my family, my friends and neighbors poured poppy seeds into my coffin saying: "When you rise, when you pick this poppy seed, you count it." They scattered it everywhere, even planted it here. It was supposed to keep me from being a vampire and walking after death. *laughs* Poppy only scares off evil creatures. I am not one of them. Have you already eaten? Was everything tasty? I’m glad. I am already taking you to your home. [longer pause]

[At the Listener's house]

You live here, right? I've seen poppies growing in your garden too. Can we talk a little longer before I go? Let's sit down, please. Do you trust me? Can I ask you a favor? Can I feed on you? Please. It won't take long, and it'll be more fun than yesterday. I'm glad you agree. *vampire feeding for a while* Thank you, your blood is intoxicating like… poppy. How are you? This time you didn't pass out. Are you sleepy? Oh, get on the bed. And go to sleep. [surprised] You want me to tell you something? You surprised me with that question, but okay. Let me tell you an old legend about poppies. After the world was created, everyone was happy: people, animals, plants, earth and sky, fire and water. Only Lady Night was unhappy. No one could see her beauty because she was hiding in the dark. Then Lady Night adorned herself with stars, planets and nebulae to make herself even a little brighter. And there were so many stars that some fell from the sky like rain. Even though Lady Night did her best, people still didn't like her. They were afraid of her. People at night felt longing and melancholy. Many dangers, ghosts and phantoms lurked in the darkness of the night. Then she decided to create her son - Dream. People were happy from then on because they had Dreams. From that moment on, Lady Night stopped frightening. People were waiting for her and her son. Lady Night and Dream brought rest and peace. People dreamed of pleasant things to wake up in the morning with renewed energy. And it was beautiful, but good things don't last forever. Soon sin was born in people's hearts, and the human decided to kill somebody. Dream wanted to prevent this by making the man fall asleep, but the power of anger was too strong and the man could not fall asleep. Dream got angry and hit the ground with his fist. Lady Night blew on this place, and after a while, a poppy red as blood grew there. It smelled so strong and intoxicating that human fell asleep. This is how poppies appeared in the world and still retain their sleep power. That is why the poppy is a symbol of sleep, it is the border between the worlds. Poppies bloom for a very short time. They live in bloom for a few days, and in a moment their petals fall and the flower dies. The flowers themselves are very delicate. Careless picking of the flower makes the petals fall. They are as fragile as the lives of people like you, my dear.

Today you are in the prime of life. You are young and beautiful, you enjoy life, but there will come a day when you will die and break my heart with your death. Although I cannot die a second time, your death will cause something inside me to die. I love you. Tell me please do you love me? You said you wanted to be my friend, but it hurts me because one day you will disappear and you will not be in this world. Please tell me: do you want to spend the future with me? Do you love me? (pause) No… I was expecting this. Maybe it would be better if I left, if we never see each other. You are strong. You are very smart and clever. You have people around you who love you, you have friends. You have your life. I don't want to destroy it. Fall asleep, and when you wake up, you'll never see me again. [brief pause] Yes? Feed on you? Last time? Are you sure this is what you want? Hmm… all right. *vampire feeding* Thank you. It was a pleasure to spend these few moments with you. Please remember Amadeus Theophilus, the vampire who loves you. *kisses* Goodbye my love.

▶ Inspirations from the Writer:

The poppy symbolizes sleep, pleasure, love, blood, life, but also death. In Slavic culture, it connects two worlds - life and death, it allows you to travel between them, it is a symbol of resurrection. The vampire is dead, but he can "walk after death," so he is resurrected. In the 17th and 18th centuries, such thinking disturbed the clergy (especially the Jesuits who were vampire specialists) because it meant that they were saints because they walked before the resurrection of the dead, which was supposed to involve everyone at the end of the world. The bodies of the vampires did not decompose, which could be seen in either the saints (if the body lay straight) or the damned (whose bodies were warped as in Hans Memling's "The Last Judgment" painting, link to the painting on the museum's website: http://www.mng.gda.pl/tryptyk/ ). Poppy seeds were also supposed to protect against vampires, they were thrown into the coffin of a suspect of vampirism. The vampire was supposed to count them after death. There can be 2,500 seeds in one poppy, so it is a difficult task. The vampire had to count all the seeds in one night.

There are also some quotes from the poem "Red Poppies" by Henryk Zbierzchowski. The poem is in the public domain, so anyone can use it any way they want. (“The purple of the petals, bloody and fiery, interwoven with a pattern of spots as black as night. “ and “Red poppies with their stigma black, who gave you colors and strange power? Are you the seed of heaven or the seed of hell that Satan once sowed in the dark night?”) Link to the poem in Polish: https://pl.wikisource.org/wiki/Ogr%C3%B3d_%C5%BCycia_(Zbierzchowski)/Maki_czerwone
