I had so much fun watching and reacting to this. Can't believe I actually had not watched this before.

"The Matrix" is maybe the next super-influential action movie after this, that changed the entire genre after it for good (although its impact isn't purely on *action* films). If you haven't seen it, you should have it on your list. (The 2 sequels are uneven. I think there's one very good movie in between those 2 uneven movies.) Also, a perfect "fun-but-silly" action movie that I always think of when I think of "Die Hard" is "The Fifth Element". Largely because Bruce Willis is in that too. It's a silly and fun sci-fi/action movie that is paced very well that I can recommend. If you're ever in the mood for something like that, please keep it in mind.

2021-11-07 04:57:21 +0000 UTCOne of the thing that makes "Die Hard" so special is that, prior to it, most action movies were Arnold or Sly Stallone-style movies, with a massive action hero who just steam-rolled through the movie, an unstoppable machine. Which can be fun to watch, but doesn't build a ton of tension. In Die Hard, the hero McClane was actually hurt and tested, was overmatched and had to survive by wits rather than muscle. It had a tremendous impact on action movies moving forward.

The sequels don't have quite the reputation of the first one, so I think I might have seen one of them once. ๐ But I enjoy occasionally revisiting this movie. There are a few really well-made action movies from the 80s and 90s (Aliens and Speed come to mind). I expect you've encountered the 'heated debate' about whether Die Hard counts as a Christmas movie. I say it is *obviously* a Christmas movie. ๐

I live alone at the moment and was planning to drive down to the south coast of England to be with my family for Christmas. Unfortunately, I happen to live in one of the areas where this damned mutant strain of COVID-19 has taken off so I am no longer allowed to travel outside the area or visit anybody in the area where I live, which has bummed me out a bit. Christmas will be lots of video calls with my family (my sister is hopefully going to set up a laptop or something so I can be 'in the room' and see people). I'm thinking of going kayaking on the Thames on Christmas morning as I've never been kayaking on Christmas Day before (the weather looks like it's going to be OK). ๐ I think that is permitted by the lockdown rules.
