Inside joke: In 3x08 when Mallory asks Sterling what year he thinks it is, that is a reference to the show's time period being deliberately vague on when it takes place. The show's creator, Adam Reed, has said they mix time periods and take the coolest stuff from each. That's why the clothes, hairstyles, cars and décor look from the 60's or 70's, the desktop PCs look late 80's or early 90's, yet they have modern mobile devices and 1080 p HD video. The Soviet Union is still a thing and the pop culture references are all over the place. Some fans just couldn't wrap their heads around this and hotly debated when the show takes place.
