I love this pilot, but you should know that this is relatively weak as far as most Psych episodes go. This is a great series. It should have priority over Veronica Mars, Harley Quinn, and likely over most other shows you are considering.

If we're throwing out some of my favorite shows (plus Firefly - I like Firefly, it's just not top-10), I think there's the best pilots that aren't just excellent as pilots but also excellent episodes on their own merit, you've got shows like "Arrested Development", "Firefly", and "Life".
One step down you have excellent pilots that are good but not great as episodes; I'd put "Psych" on that tier, along with "Keen Eddie"... maybe "Veronica Mars" too. "Dexter". "Community" probably, although it gets *SO MUCH* better that it could be argued to be on the next tier down given how great some of the best episodes are (to me, mostly you can just point to season 3; almost every episode in that season is just so significantly better than the pilot, even though the pilot is good on its own merits.)
Then one more step down where the episode is probably good enough to intrigue you but if I recommended it to a friend and s/he wasn't into it, I'd say to be patient because it makes big strides moving forward. I think "Farscape" is here; I expect you to be at least intrigued, but it may not grab you immediately the way some other shows' pilots have; it starts out *interesting* but maybe not necessarily great. But it builds and gets better and better.
(Whereas if a friend wasn't into, say, "Psych" or "Keen Eddie" after one episode, I'd say that it may not be worth continuing because the pilot is a really good example of what the show is moving forward, even though of course there are gonna be better episodes.)

I am so glad you enjoyed it. Maybe it can make it to the rotation one day. Unlike many shows, what you see in the pilot is what you get for many, many seasons. It is a wonderful little piece of television, right up to the movies they released after the series was done.

OMG yessss! I'm so glad you're trying out Psych! Such an under-appreciated gem of a show. Honestly the entire series is really good the whole way through. Plus the main 2 characters (Shawn & Gus) really make the whole show work. They're wholesome besties and they're absolutele jerks to eachother in hilarious ways sometimes lol

I really like Farscape, but I don't think the pilot is nearly as strong. The characters are all new to each other - unlike, say, Firefly (a similar-ish show that is IMO not as good but started out of the gate much stronger) - so the characters are feeling each other out, there aren't any stable relationships to fall back on. I think it's interesting right off the bat, but it takes until late in the 1st season before they really introduce the main conflict in the show. Until then it's good but it's more a series of solid episodes more than one main story arc.

Yeah, it really hits the ground running. It's a pretty average episode as far as Psych episodes go, IMO, but it's *excellent* as a pilot: it sets up the premise very well, is good enough that you definitely should know if the show is for you, the relationship between Shawn and Gus is fantastic from jump street, and of course the entire point of the show is presented right at the end of the opening sequence (before the credits): "Oh no, ma'am, I'm never gonna grow up."
