I think they had even planned for Andy to pretty much disappear as a character before long, with no point to him after being the ex trying to get in the way of Ann and Mark. But Aubrey and Chris had chemistry that wasn't planned. I believe it was simply when Andy was explaining his music and April said "I totally get it" (which may have been ad libbed) that they saw some chemistry, and started writing it in.
