Sony SRS-XB33 - outdoor soundcheck

It was a beautiful day so that I had to go out and shoot this outdoor video with the Sony SRS-XB33 against the Anker Soundcore Motion+ and also the Teufel Motiv Go at the end.

I didn't hear the intermodulation issues that much through my microphones like they appear here, but the Sony would have definitely benefited from some additional tweeters. It sounds fine up to 3/4 and is still usable at maximum just starts to distort with particular tracks and you need to readjust bass through the Music Center app. Turning bass to maximum was not wise for maximum volume, but it usually works well for half volume and above.

My current settings are: treble +10, mids +2 and bass -3 to -5 for low levels. For levels around half and above I just boost bass  to +5 and with most "normal" recordings it sounds fine and clean up to maximum like that.

Unfortunately Sony still didn't learn how to make a speaker sound appealing for all volume levels and you need to readjust the sound for the given volume level on your own. But the XB33 definitely has some unique character and charm which I would like to demonstrate in my upcoming indoor videos.

With the current discount on amazon.de it is an extremely appealing speaker, just not really suitable as some "boombox", but rather for critical listening. The speaker is marketed wrong I would say.

So stay tuned for my upcoming videos, which should reveal its full potential.

I own the Anker so I am very familiar with it and I love it, but you know I am always on the lookout for something better at this size. The Sony does have deeper bass, but the dispersion, mids and highs are lacking compared to the Anker. The Anker has livelier, more interesting mids and highs. Not tempted to give up the Anker just yet.

Surprised by the Sony

What a surprise this Sony!, Last week i tested the xb43 on Mediamarkt and didnt like It, but didnt try this model. I had the anker for some weeks and its hard to improve It for what It costs(now its just 69€ on sale). But this Sony to me sounds a little bit better at moderate volumes. To me the Sony sounds overall darker and fuller in the bass, and the anker clearer(possible tweeters here helps) with more highs. For my personal taste and only watching this video i think i will prefer the Sony because of the overall fuller sound. I Will test It for my self on the next visit to mediamarkt. Thanks for the video, was excellent as allways.

The Sony sounds nice and comparable to the Anker at normal level but looses control and details at maximum so you need to reduce bass like you did. If the dsp was better to control bass at max it would be a great speaker but still would be slighty outperformed by the Motion+ with more punch and more separation thanks to tweeters They cost more or less the same (depend which dealer) the Anker is again a better deal

Woah, for being the same price sony for me outperformed by a little bit the anker because of on how it sounds, but yeah still distorts a bit more, due to not having tweeters, the anker still has an advantage, and it takes that by sounding more dispersed and dynamic while the sony having to relay on these oval formated drivers,(quick explanation) that alan ross explained that this kind of format helps the driver to avoid more excusion so i guess it might help control a little bit making more space to boost bass a little more. But for me neither wins has since both have their issues, but for this price i cannot complain. Also as for the hiss, i think it might be just becuz of treble but, know what?? Just leave it be, i am ok with that as your recordings still are the most honest ever. :)

Hi Oluv, I wanted to thank you for all your work and all your precious videos. I've been following you for 3 months now, and thanks to you I've saved 100+ euros by returning the JBL Xtreme 2 and picking the Soundcore Motion+ instead, which I bought for 69 euros on Amazon two days ago. What an incredible speaker for this price! I was really looking forward for the Xtreme 3 but for this price I could not be more happy with the Anker. Best regards from Italy Oluv!
