表紙絵その壱ができあがるまで(1)/HOW I MADE THE COVER ILLUSTRATION (1)

と、言うことで、今回の冬コミ新刊その壱、の表紙絵がどのように出来上がっていったかをご案内。作業時間は2日間でしたが、他の作業と並行して、なので、正味は1日ぐらいかと。 1）まずラフ画です。大体こんなポーズでこんな構図で、というのをざっくり決めました。墨色が一番最初のポーズ。少し動きをつけたいので、水色の絵の構図に決めました。 2）1の構図を元に書き込んでいきます。手の位置で悩みました。裏表紙であまり目立たない箇所ですが、表紙裏表紙を一枚絵にしたかったので、バランスなどを考えます。 3）臀部や左腕のバランスで悩みまくり、何度も書き直しています。 4）上半身は大体決まったので書き込んでいきますが、やはりまだまだ腕の位置が決まりません。表紙裏表紙、一続きの絵として見た場合とは別に、表紙だけを見た場合でもバランス良い見栄えにしたいので、腕や手は最後の最後まで悩みまくりました。 5）ようやく全体がまとまってきたので、さらに細かい調整をしつつ書き込みを続けていきます。 6）表情が納得いかないので描き直し、さらには頭の大きさも変更しました。頭の大きさは常に悩みどころです。35mmレンズを通して見た場合、5までのサイズが正しいのですが、現実には自然な大きさでも、絵として見た場合にはちょっと頭でっかちになってしまいます。小さくすると、対比して身体が大きく感じられるようになるのですが、小さくしすぎると非現実的になりすぎるので、「見る側」が心地よく感じられるサイズを探すのは結構大変です。一般的な漫画であればその辺のことは全然気にしないで済むのですが、ゲイ漫画の場合は、肉体がセクシーに見えるかどうか、が、とても重要なファクターなので、実際その辺は相当悩みます。 7）およそのものが決まったので、肉体の陰影を描き出すための細かい斜線を加えました。こうした斜線を取り入れた描画スタイルは、少し懐かしい少年漫画や青年漫画の雰囲気を出そうと思って数年前からはじめました。これも紆余曲折していたのですが、最近になってようやく、複雑なことを考えずに、学生時代のデッサン画と同じ要領で面を描けばいいことに気づきまして。デッサン画描くの大好きなんですね。鉛筆一本で色々なマチエールを描きだすこととか。なので、今年ぐらいからようやく、「あ、そうか！もっと鉛筆画のように、気楽に描けばいいのか！」と思うに至った次第です。多分、この描画スタイルは今後ずっと続けて行く、市川和秀の絵、になると思っています。 色塗りは次回に続きます。 Here is the memo of how I drew the cover illustration of new manga. 1) First of all. A very rough sketch. I drew a rough image of what I wanted to draw. The black color line is the initial idea. Then, changed it to the blue line. I wanted to add some movement there. 2) Those arms were the difficult parts in this illustration. I was having a hard time to grasp the entire image checking the balance. 3) I drew again and again the hip and the arms. 4) I started adding some details. However, still I couldn't make up my mind where those arms should go. 5) Finally, I was getting there. I added more details. 6) I changed his expression. Also I modified the size of his head. In the ordinary manga for straight, I'm sure I don't have to worry about the size of head. However, this is the manga for gay. In gay manga, how one's body look sexually attractive is really important. Up to stage 5, the size was quite natural. It's almost like the view from 35mm camera lens but I needed to change it to add more sexual magnetism. To find the balance to distinguish unnaturalness and attractiveness is always a hard part in gay illustration. 7) As I've almost decided the entire composition, I started cross hatching the shadow of the body. I'd adopted this style couple of years ago because I wanted to add some retro, old style manga feeling in my drawing. Though I couldn't figure out how to draw it effectively for a while, this year, I'd finally found out the fact that this is simply the same way as I used to draw pencil sketch in my art-school days. I really loved pencil sketch (yes, still I do). That was my favorite. I'm sure this style will be the one what Ichikawa style would be. To be continued.
