i know im 4 years late but i was relistening to this episode and scrolling through gretchen's lingfic list and thought of a book that could be added - "the idiot" by elif batuman. i came across it one day when i asked a book store worker if they had any linguistics books and they said "unfortunately no, but i can recommend this really good novel about someone studying linguistics in uni!" so naturally i bought it ! i havent finished it yet but im enjoying it so far and there's a surpsising amount of ling references sprinkled in there :-)
