Earfun UBOOM L - another teaser

Unfortunately I still found some issues with my settings included within the firmware used in this video. I found some tracks which caused a slight distortion with outdoor mode, but indoor mode appears clean so far. Meanwhile I readjusted the dynamic EQ for low levels for even better results. There is slightly more bass boost at the lowest steps now and at the same time I reduced treble a tiny bit but boost more at low levels. There is some difference between both units I got especially in upper treble with one unit having about 1dB more treble like visible in the measurement, therefore I decided to reduce treble to get a better average. Apart from treble they both measure about the same:

I wasted several hours of listening at really low levels to get a result which would satisfy me even with the very first volume steps and get a sound which remains transparent and warm at the same time. You shouldn’t notice the effect but at the same time you should miss it if it wasn’t there. Below you can see the current frequency response for both indoor (blue) and outdoor mode (red) at half volume:

You can see that I tried to extent bass for indoor mode but I am currently evaluating if it wouldn’t be better to cut off slightly higher as the difference is hardly noticeable but to me it would appear as if the limiter worked cleaner without that lower bass rest. The PRs are most effective at around 65hz, below that only the drivers are pushed stronger without much effect. I am still listening which approach will sound more convincing. I also seem to hear some difference in bass between both units which do not show up in the measurement though.

Outdoor mode is always 2dB louder to get this “wow-effect” when activated. Measured at various levels up to about 2/3 volume, above that bass reduction gets stronger therefore I would suggest to use outdoor mode if you really indent using it for higher levels.

The final sound shouldn’t change much compared to what you can hear in this video, I only try to avoid any kind of distortion at high levels which may result in a bit more bass reduction for outdoor mode. Especially Chillhop tracks can cause some problems due to the heavily bassy masterings. I am trying to find all those tracks and adjust the sound accordingly, although there may still be some special cases I missed, I try to make it as controlled as possible. I could easily make it to play securely clean but this would result in a more boring sound, therefore I am fighting to approach this barrier as tight as possible.

The final firmware should be confirmed mid of next week. I am planning to prepare a final video putting it against some other speakers again, maybe I will already manage to record with my new microphones which should also offer a more realistic result.Tell me which speakers you want to hear, but so far only the Helsinki has an obvious edge. The Motion plus with the recently suggested settings still lacks definition and has a boomier bass which is not as tight, while if resuced more it lacks body. The Audio Pro C3 sounds very weird against the Earfun, directly compared the Sonos Roam gives quite a boxy sound as well and when listening to the Denon Envaya again the Earfun with my current bass adjustments sounds rounder overall. The only speaker with a similar sound was the upgraded Soundcore Boost, but that one still has issues with disappearing bass at low levels and it doesn’t play as loud and controlled at high levels. I won’t buy any further speakers though, like the A1 that was suggested. I had the new and old A1 several times but always returned them because they never fully satisfied me.
