Lingthusiasm custom art preview!

One of your and our favourite recurring topics in Lingthusiasm episodes is the question of how children learn languages... and what would happen if kids acquired the Russian/English hybrid language spoken on the International Space Station. You'd have a Space Pidgin becoming a Space Creole because of the linguistic genius of Space Babies!

(If you want to refresh your memory, see Episode 1 and Episode 7, which we pulled together the relevant quotes from as this quote post, and we also talked about connections between linguistics and stargazing in Episode 15.)

We can't afford to send actual babies to space (and we're preeeeetty sure that, um, it wouldn't exactly pass through a university ethics committee), so linguistics MA, language teacher, and illustrator Lucy is helping us illustrate a gorgeous fantasy version instead!

The full final art will be big and colourful with lots of babies (and have real constellations from both of our hemispheres), but we're super excited about this preliminary sketch from Lucy and we wanted to share it with you first as our patrons.

So without further ado, meet one of the space babies! Plus our new favourite, burrito bub.

You'll also get to see the final art and merch here when they're ready, before we show it to everyone else! But for now: SPACE BABIES. ZOMG. πŸŽ§πŸ’šπŸ‘Άβœ¨πŸš€

Oooh, interesting idea!

Is each space baby going to have an umbilical cord linking it to the ISS? This would be doubly apt because umbilical cord has two similar meanings that are both relevant in this context - babies and space stations!
