Audio-Technica ATH-M50xBT2 EQ

A friend sent me his ATH-M50xBT2 for a test. I attached a measurement compensated for my target which shows some stronger channel-imbalance and a similar response to what RTings had measured.

The headphones comes with an own app which provides a parametric 5-band EQ. Unfortunately the filters are quite limited as you cannot set precise frequency or Q-values and only +/-6dB gains are available.

Nevertheless I tried to create a rough EQ to bring the sound closer to my target as well as a variant with a more Harman like bass, which should be the more correct setting actually. It’s far from perfect but definitely way nicer sounding than with the default setting.

Two days ago my AT came back from his short vacation at Oluv. What can I say... It's always the same game: With the Free Pro, Free Pro 2, UBOOM L: I hear the neutral tuning and think: flat, very flat, where are the bass and treble sparkle gone? Does not take long until the hearing has changed / accustomed, and suddenly all other tunings just sound wrong. Only because of this neutral tuning do voices come out of the background and instruments sound correct. Also in the low frequency range the clean separation, the details, the precision of the individual tones becomes alive by reduction respectively correction to normal level. Then you can also hear that the low frequency is absolutely present, it only comes more to the fore in mainstream tunings due to the reduced mids. With the usually boosted high and low frequencies, a spectrum expansion is also suggested, a supposedly wider stage is created. This inevitably happens at the expense of the correct reproduction, which then sounds really unpleasant, especially with bass and treble-heavy tracks. In short: The "neutralized" AT sounds more genuine, more honest, less hollow, and overall more correct than the Q30. Really fun to listen to music with it. THANKS @ Olaf! Was soll ich sagen... DANKE @ Olaf!

in this case make sure you get the BT2 but not the first version. The BT doesn't sound the same like the non BT but pretty harsh in heights and less natural and "true" then the BT2. They definitely improved the sound quality on the BT2 compared to the BT. 🙋🏻‍♂️

Thanks to you both for the feedback. I love my Q30s for home listening, but when I go outside (especially on a windy day), I find the isolation isn't strong enough to hear over ambient noise. Also, though I don't take many calls - occasionally if I have to take one through the Q30, I get a lot of complaints about call quality. I have a pair of the (non-bluetooth) version of the ATH-M50X that I use for DJing, so it would be nice to get a Bluetooth version for listening to music on my phone.
