Bonus 48: Q&A about naming dogs, modifying English, linguistics research, and more

What do you think is the best food to name a dog after? If you had to remove a phoneme from English, which do you think would have the most interesting results? How do you keep up with linguistics research outside academia?

In this episode, Lauren and Gretchen get enthusiastic about answering your questions! We also talk about our recent news and upcoming plans for 2021, "tell me you're a linguist without telling me you're a linguist", and lots more great questions from the patron Discord.  If you haven't joined the Discord yet, here are instructions for linking your Patreon and Discord accounts

Comments

Maybe Regina, but German does use the Schwa in words like “bitte.” I feel like my American diphthongs create my accent in German more than schwa. Now I want to try pronouncing some words with I in reduced vowels to see what they sound like.

As a German native speaker, I think English without the Schwa would just sound a lot like German. Or Dutch
