Sinking the Super-Battleship Yamato - Operation Ten Go

The Super-Battleship Yamato sets sail on a one way mission to attack the Allied landings on Okinawa. The largest battleship ever built is detected by an American submarine, and carrier aircraft are sent to attack her before she even gets there.

Thank you for improving the animation, but I honestly think it’s unnecessary and a little distracting. Your last video before this was peak war doc animation in my opinion. Would prefer to see that style more than this but of course will enjoy regardless. Thank you!

Jack

It’s complicated, and it is my fear that it may not be entirely cultural. A total war like that entails total destruction. The pseudo-Clausewitzian concept of “Total War” would result in no less than that, where nations are transformed into battleships and everyone onboard as sailors, there is no way but to fight…

Ben Kerry

I'll never completely understand the cultural differences that lead to "throwing an egg at a rock." Pride leading to more and more wasted lives, hatred doing the same in more recent conflicts. Another great episode, regardless!

I'm sure they would have won, but I'm also sure that those 18 in guns would be more effective against ships than aircraft. How many hits would Yamato have scored during its last stand and how many men would each hit have killed

JakesDevil

Yamato was designed to fight two enemy battleships at the same time. Spurance was going to send six.

Lurker45

The initial plan being to put ships and thousands of sailors in range of those guns is wild. Why would they try to kill it with battleships when they had Overwhelming air superiority?

JakesDevil

Tremendous work again. Love the 3-dimensional detail of the Hell Divers and showing Yamato listing.

10 aircraft lost, 7 were from the magazine explosion... not a good trade

Concentrating on a single side of the ship with torpedos was a lesson learned from fighting Musashi. in the Sibuyan Sea.

"It's over"

In 2199, Yamato goes on to save the Earth from Deslok.

I have always found Ten-Go to be fascinating as Japan was very clearly fighting on their back foot by this point.

Perfect timing
