Sneak Peek Sundays #3

This image of Spooky was actually the first image that came to my mind when I thought of creating the Romance Card Art as calendar pin-up type pics: Spooky in his boxers, pulling the classic rabbit from a hat. This is the note I sent to Adam: SAFE - Standing, in regular boxers (with little hearts on them). I was thinking he'd be working in a playful way with a top hat, a magician's magic wand and a rabbit. He could be smiling at us knowingly, holding the top hat pointing his wand at it with the rabbit peeking out. Or he could be removing the hat from his head, revealing the rabbit sitting there. Just something fun with "magic". (I started this with the word "SAFE" because, as one of the adult characters of The Young Protectors, Spooky also gets a NSFW, "Full Monty" version of his Romance Card Art. This was my note for the Safe For Work version.) As you can see, there wasn't much change between the final, approved thumbnail, and the final, approved pencils. Things are polished and rendered more between the two, some cool curtains were added as a backdrop, but the pose, expression, even the magic is pretty much the same. Seems Spooky just makes everything easy; he's that kind of guy. :) Also, for those of you who haven't seen him fully nude in the Height Chart for the Guys (one of the NSFW Kickstarter rewards), you might also notice he doesn't have six-pack abs. In fact, like two-thirds of everyone in the U.S., he's carrying a little weight. Just like I include folks from different backgrounds as heroes in my comic, I also like to show people with different body types as "romantic lead" types. And that's in fact what Spooky is. In my world, he's widely considered to be one of the sexiest guys around. Not to everyone's taste, of course (who is?), but he regularly makes it on the 10 Sexiest Men Alive lists for the various glossies. That's not something we get to see a lot in mainstream genre stories (very rare with guys, and almost never with women) -- that is, someone with more than 15% body fat who is widely considered very sexy. Not just funny or lovable, but smoking hot. But in my world, lots of people think of Spooky that way. (And let's not even get into the question of height and guys—Spooky is not tall.) But to just *say* that as the writer, to just announce that the mainstream thinks of him as a sexy guy, to just declare as Word of God that opinion as a given in my world: well, that might show I have a noble agenda as a writer, but that's all it would feel like. If not political correctness, then at least wishful thinking. So, it's been very gratifying that Spooky has actually become a bit of a sex symbol for the readers of this comic as well. Not for everyone, of course, and sometimes with disclaimers like "I never thought I'd like someone with baby cheeks", but a lot of readers have publicly stated time and time again that they wouldn't mind a little private Spooky time. Because, as a character, he really is a sexy guy. And that's how I think it is in the real world. There is a physical ideal that the Western mainstream media tries to sell us for how sexy men and women *should* look (white, thin, young, etc.). And everyone else who doesn't fit that mold is supposed to be some kind of compromise. But in the real world, people find lots of different types attractive, and ultimately the sexiest thing about a person is how they act, what their attitude is, and how they treat you. At least that's been my experience, and one I didn't figure out until later in life. That's a lesson I'd love to pass on to younger folks looking for romance—don't buy into the mainstream story about what's sexy, and especially, don't let it convince you that somehow you aren't sexy enough. Focus on being confident, on treating people well and with respect, on having fun and being fun. Bottom line: treat people well and think of yourself as sexy and really good things can happen. I don't know if The Young Protectors or any of my comics will do a good job in spreading that particular message. But I do find it gratifying that lots of folks find Spooky Jones a sexy guy. And I hope y'all enjoy seeing him in his boxers. ;)

Indeed it does, Boris. So glad you like this! :)

Alex Woolfson

Thank you so much, Amanda! It's good to know that as a Kickstarter backer you're liking the sneak peeks! (That's one of the reason I'm including them, because a lot of Patrons are also Kickstarter backers. :) ) I'm also glad that you're liking what I'm trying to do by showing different body types. And that's a good suggestion about Commander and The Platinum Priestess—I'll think about that. :)

Alex Woolfson

So I just upped my pledge (to see the Annihilator, natch), and am so glad I did, because I didn't realize what I was missing! As a kickstarter backer I thought I was getting the scoop on the trading card art already, but these sneak peaks are great! Oh man, Spooky is seriously my favourite, and definitely one of the sexiest guys in comics. I think what I like best about your work, Alex, is how you manage to show men of all types as sexy -- even the more obviously muscular members of the team all have different builds and looks to their bodies and aren't just a series of identical Ken dolls. Actually, I think that personally, I find the bodies of Mitch, Spooky, and Kyle to be the most attractive. I've never been one for huge muscles (though Fluke makes 'em look *really* good in his almost-wiry-but-still-built way) and comics where all the dudes look like Tsunami have never held much interest for me, attraction-wise. I'd also love to see a pin-up comparison like the height chart, but of Commander and the Platinum Priestess in lingerie....or less! *swoon*

That's very cool, Danish. Thank you for sharing this. And welcome to the Patreon! :D

"...but a lot of readers have publicly stated time and time again that they wouldn't mind a little private Spooky time". I'd say that includes ME, buuut somehow I don't think that's news ;) Spooky in boxers, giving that quirky smile, is a treat. That hair coming out of his cap - something I usually find a bit derpy - is just cute on Spooky :) I can only agree about Spooky's sexiness. It's Spooky-smiles, his way around/treatment of others, his personality that makes him sexy. Oki, I sure notice his body too, especially that NSFW poster preview I've seen ^_~ ...but it's not primarily what makes him really hot to me. Example: I can be really attracted to a guy because of his eyes, for various reasons (oh lord, a guy who really can 'talk' with his eyes alone *swoon*), so I've never been able to say I have a specific type. For me Spooky is hot!

DanishWolf

The Western mainstream media pressure towards a very specific and somewhat unrealistic idea of "sexy" is sometimes hard to deal with for us people that don't really conform to it, so having a character like Spooky that IS sexy (in and out of universe) makes me really happy. And this art piece may be making me a little hot under the collar. And a little extra weight in the right places makes cuddle times more comfy and fun!

Raistlinsama

omnomnom :3

Glad you to hear you like what I'm doing here, Lawrence! :)

Alex Woolfson

I actually like that he has a different sans six-pack body type. Makes him more realistic. Plus, if his main method of attack is magic, he doesn't really need to be ripped. He's still really cute.

LarryP

Why, yes, I believe he does. ;)

Alex Woolfson

:)

Alex Woolfson

Werk dat magic, Spook. *drools*

Wha- Spooky gives private shows in nothing but his undies and cap!? Where do I sign up? The artwork is amazing; Spooky radiates self-confidence and mischief in a way that gives me butterflies in my stomach. He knows exactly what he's doing to us, doesn't he?

Rabbits. Not women. Not men. Spooky's romantic preference is rabbits. Who would have thunk it?

Klaus

I don't have any grand words, just wanted to say that I love Spooky in his heart covered boxers. It's just so him. And yes, that's sexy. His confidence and his kindness and his fondness for hugs is very sexy.

Admiral Jane

While the art should not be shared, it's totally OK to quote my words if you think it'd be helpful. :) And yes, it can take a little while to overcome the "programming" society puts in our heads, but I've found that if you "fake it until you make it" (that is, just act like you're confident, even if you don't 100% feel it emotionally yet) that eventually the heart catches up and it becomes natural. It's a little bit like how moving the muscles of your face into a frown can make you actually feel sad, or if you move the muscles of your face into a real smile, how it can lift your mood. At least in my experience. I'm very glad you liked the Spooky Sneak Preview!

Alex Woolfson

he's awesome as always :D pure confidence in his face and pose even with those boxers xD That's Spooky for you! I really enjoyed reading your excursion about real sexiness! I'm also one of those 2 in 3 people (in Germany it's the same by now) and hell, even if I totally share your opinion on the matter I can't think of myself as sexy ^^ maybe I will when I'm older, who knows! Still really liked your comment on this and with your permission I'd like to c/p the text to a friend who has nothing to do with webcomic but I feel like she would gain sth from reading an official statement like yours that came NOT from one of her friends, would that be alright with you?

Nadin Brokop

You're very welcome, Chris! And for the record, Spooky is a big fan of hugs...

Alex Woolfson

Yes... he IS smoking hot. Confidence is the ultimate aphrodisiac and my Spooky is so fun that I want to hug him and squeeze him and .... well you get it. This is going to become a wonderful image. Thanks Alex for sharing this sneak peak. (Yes he's totally a boxer type dude). LOL.

Chris Dangerfield

Thank you for sharing that, Megan. I think that's really good advice. :) Hugs back!

Alex Woolfson

"Don't buy into the mainstream story about what's sexy, and especially, don't let it convince you that somehow you aren't sexy enough." AAAAAH! If I could, I'd give you SUCH a hug attack. I'll just do it in spirit now.... There. I love you, Alex. You just put into easy words, the thing I've always tried and failed to express. The ridiculous standards for "pretty" and "handsome" can hardly be fit into in this country. Television, movies, magazines, Internet spreads, all of these things inspire people to feel bad about how they look because they're not like the people they see. When I was 8 years old, I realized I was a misfit. I couldn't figure out other kids, it was like I was born on a distant planet and never got the hang of acting like an Earthling. We have a word for it now: Introvert. Back then it was "not acclimating, too unsocial" by adult standards. I won't repeat what the kids said. Kids are such vicious little fuckers. By the time I got to high school, I had a revelation: "I am NEVER going to be like the majority. SO WHAT????? Fuck it!" My high school years didn't suck too much as a result. I was the weird one, and I loved it. I flipped the bird at the establishment and was actually respected for it; the principal and others liked to hear what I had to say because I'd give them exactly what I thought, straight up. Painfully and brutally honest. My message to the younger generation: NEVER allow others to define you, not even your family. Figure youself out, and be happy with it. If you're not happy, find the reason why and correct it. Embrace the freedom of being exactly who you are. NEVER follow the crowd, form thoughts and opinions of your own. Say what you think with honesty. And, most importantly, ALWAYS BE YOURSELF.
