Sneak Peek Sundays # 8

This week I'm sharing Fritz Casas' inks for the Spooky Jones Powers Card art. For the Kickstarter, I'm creating 4 packs of Trading Cards featuring each of the main characters from The Young Protectors Volume One, and the Powers cards show a "powerful image of that character in action." Here we see Spooky Jones (working his other job as an Occult Detective and saver of lost children) defending some monk kids from some very annoyed stone monsters. Fritz is a meticulous artist, and it can take several weeks between revisions, but I'm always wowed by what he comes up with. He created both the Origin Card and the Powers Card linework for the Hunter/Killer cards. And one thing I love about him is that he's able to pack so much story-telling into a single image. A whole ton of things are going on in this image, but once it's colored, it'll all make beautiful sense. And what's that, you say? Those stone monsters look familiar? Well, they just might if you saw The Platinum Priestess's Powers Card art! (Which if you haven't, you will. I do believe it will be the featured wallpaper art for this week's Wallpaper Wednesdays.) It's fun to tell stories "between" the cards when I can, and I saw an opportunity here. ;) I hope you enjoy looking at Fritz' amazingly dynamic linework and please let your imagination ponder exactly how they all wound up in this situation. This one is going to be a lot of fun to put colors on. More soon! Alex

Sneak Peek Sundays # 8

Comments

Oh and as Hours Left said... I so agree. Seeing these here just makes me more excited to have the actual cards. Geek much? LOL.

Chris Dangerfield

Yay! Glad to hear it, Hours! :)

Alex Woolfson

Thank you very much for your thoughtful reaction as well, Chris! It's so much fun for me to hear specifics about what you love in these images. And yep, if Spooky has a weakness that could be exploited, protecting kids would likely be part of it.

Alex Woolfson

You're very welcome, syllibub! I'm so glad you like it! Thank you for your very thoughtful reaction (both in this comment and your next one!) You're thinking about Spooky in just the right way. And maybe I'll tell a story about what happened here sometime. If there's interest... ;)

Alex Woolfson

I really love this one. I can't wait to have all these cards at home. :)

Hours Left

Oh love this! Of course I love Spooky in general, but I love it when we see him in his occult detective role. Bravo Alex for once again picking Fritz Casas, an artist who brings his own style and yet compliments Adam and Vero and leaves us feeling cohesive. That's got to take time and effort on your part. I love the exotic setting. The temple. The children. They wonderfully dynamic physical expression of Spooky's motion and the way his trails of magic whip around accenting it. Most I love his expression of exuberance as he does what he loves best! When you see him in this context, saving young people (as Syllibub alludes to well down below) you completely understand why he couldn't let Mitch smash down and HAD to cushion his blow, even at the risk of what happened with Duncan.

Chris Dangerfield

(Also, I see that those monks or apprentices are young...and the necromancer in the second prose story that Spooky and Amanda took down was killing kids...it makes me wonder if, given his background, Spooky takes a special interest in cases where children have been victimized or are in danger. It seems like the kind of thing he'd do, and would explain why he wants to help Amanda head up the Young Protectors team instead of taking up more lucrative offers -- it gives him the opportunity to look out for younger people who have had a hard time.)

This really made my heart pound -- the details are incredible, and I recognized Sircea's Easter Island golem dudes right away! I love Spooky's expression; you can tell he's really enjoying flexing his magic muscles, that kind of happiness and satisfaction you get from doing something you're excellent at. I'm really interested to learn what exactly is going on here -- is Spooky defending a temple and young monks? Anyway, the linework is incredible, and this is going to be so gorgeous when it's colored! Thanks for the preview!

Just wow! From the clothing and the temple in the background, I assume these kids are Buddhist apprentices. I hope the Colossi of Memnon don't get involved in this fight.

Mik McAllister

As they should... :) Glad you like this, Nadin!

Alex Woolfson

There is really a great amount of details (aka dust and pebble flying around xD) and the dynamic is already amazing in b/w, wondering how this must look coloured! and the golems remind me on the Easter Island Moai statues a little :)

Nadin Brokop

Glad you like it, Kendall! (And yes, Spooky is having a good time here. :) )

Alex Woolfson

Yep. :)

Alex Woolfson

Me likey! Very dynamic scene, and I love how Spooky's like "aw yeah, this is fun!" ;-) And yes, those critters look familiar. . . .

KendallPB

Spooky gettin' down to business!
