That's a good question, Chris. I thought this change Julie made when first rendering the pencils was fine, but I actually liked the version in the thumbs more. I thought Flyboy's emotion was clearer (and he was cuter). And this beat really is more about Flyboy than Tsunami, so I wanted the angle to favor young Mitch. Finally, just flow-wise, it's easier to have Mitch on the left since he's speaking first. :)
