This. . . really is complex, isn’t it? The cues here for Spooky’s expressions suggest that the history between these two is incredibly important to how this scene is unfolding, and a fly-on-the-wall history is not what we as readers have. From my recall, on one side is Kyle, a person grappling with his sexual orientation, being a prince of Hell, having been manipulated for a demonic rite to end the world as he knew it, and still wrestling in some ways with what happened the first time he explored his sexuality. On the other side is Spooky, a person who got dropped into Hell as a young teen, spent a year in survival mode constantly fending off threats, popped back out on earth to discover he can’t remember his name or the words for the things he likes, for whatever reason is not restored to living with his family and instead is an emancipated minor eventually aging into legal adulthood, but the entire time has been fielding requests to use his powers to rescue people from demonic threats, which may have sometimes been triggering for him - we don’t have that information currently. They both have every right to have incredible difficulty talking about relationships and trusting. Kyle has stonewalled Spooky’s attempts to bring up the topic of dating with him, including the present conversation, and Spooky may have been more reserved in talking about his past relationships, maybe because Amanda wasn’t supportive of the relationships he was getting into. In both sets of circumstances, I can imagine them feeling terribly alone and not completely confident on the inside, and now they’re here trying to figure out if they want to get closer, and if yes, how.
