Added 2014-12-09 12:37:07 +0000 UTCRostov-on-Don have to be one of the worst kept cities in Russia. Seriously, there is dirt, garbage and dog shit EVERYWHERE! That being said I am still in a semi-euphoric state about being here. And rightfully so. All the things I've been missing in that village I used to live in are easily accessible here. Including a quite decent art supply store which is literally in a 10 minutes waking distance from my apartment. If previously I would order things from Moscow or even from abroad, now I can just buy what I need on my way back from a bus stop. Fucking loving this! http://dai.ly/x2bz24k

I try to stay informed on current events and remain politically active and informed, but you are constantly having to sort through biases and dig out facts. The media loves a good story, doubly so when they get to write it themselves. We only hear about Russia in a negative and foreboding light in most western countries, and there are still a lot of Cold War fears left over in our culture from our parents and grandparents generations, especially in the US, and Germany. I always love your walking videos and vlogs because you offer that kind of window in to another world for us foreigners. We get to see what life is like in Russia from the point of view of a friendly Russian, without any fear mongering or propaganda. Just "Hey guys, this is what I'm doing." You don't try to hide how shitty things can be, or play up how great Russia is. I'm not sure if you understand how incredibly rare that level of insight is for most of us.

For the post part all they do is blow things out of proportion and borderline lie. That is true for any new company in any country I'm afraid. Your link doesn't work by the way. As a person who are currently in Rostov though I can say that i don't see any (at all) signs of things they talk about on TV all the time...

And I never watch TV either. American TV News would never mention anything not damning Russia right now. There's a bit of a cold war vibe over here right now.

You are very close to the border, and Rostov was targeted by Ukraine mortars as recently as July. I imagine being so close to a hostile border would take a tole. Not to mention the strain on government resources that must be generated by the sudden influx of refugees. Maybe it will improve as things calm down in the Ukraine.

I don't really care about Christmas that much but you should really get something overpriced thing that you wanted for forever but never got the chance to buy. Go BUY IT, you deserve a pat on the back for a job well done! And when you are done with the HT you should go on a two week vacation!
