Imagine seeing these movies as a teenager when they came out. I remember these were so frightening then. They made me the horror fan I am today.

In fact, comparing it to the horror franchises of 1980s–90s like “Friday the 13th,” “Hellraiser,” “Poltergeist,” “Halloween,” and others, “Elm Street” has the most consistent level of quality. Repetitious plots? Sure. But it’s the nightmare set pieces we come to see and they’re almost always imaginative spectacles. (We also love Freddy.) The weakest is “Freddy’s Dead” and even then I was never bored. Not including crossovers or remakes, the franchise ends on a high note with “New Nightmare.” Should you watch all these franchise sequels? Absolutely yes! I don’t understand the point of horror fans telling new fans not to watch this or that sequel or remake. Virtually everyone here has seen them all and made up their own minds about their relative quality. I know I did and I’m glad that I did. I encourage you to do that, too. For instance, the first three “Amityville” movies. You enjoyed the first one. The second is a prequel (my favorite) and the third, once released in 3D, is just silly fun. Had I listened to people who told me not to bother with the rest of the franchise, I would have missed some fun entertainment and scares. “Poltergeist II: The Other Side” isn’t as good overall as the original—but if you skip it for that reason, you’ll miss an unforgettable villain. “Poltergeist III,” again, isn’t as good as either of its predecessors, but it has some ingenious practical effects that make it worth seeing. I can’t comment on any of the sequels after that one because I haven’t had much interest in seeing them. But that was my call and no one else’s. I don’t like “Hellbound: Hellraiser II” on the whole. Some fans hate it, some love it. Is it worthy of your time? How could I say no when I myself felt it worth at least one viewing? I wish my fellow fans would stop gatekeeping like this.
