I don't know how I missed this movie reaction, but it sure looks like I did. I first saw this with my parents at a drive-in double feature. The first movie was the 1933 King Kong. I remember the Omen scaring my mother so much. A few years earlier, I tried to get my mom to watch The Exorcist. She said she had read the book, and that was enough for her.

2024-01-11 19:37:53 +0000 UTCThere's a part of a scene that's indicative of the great atmosphere in this one. It's early on in the movie when Robert and Kathy are getting settled in their new place. After waving to the nanny Robert closes the shutters, you then cut to a shot of Kathy innocently looking on with the darkness enveloping her face as the light is being cut off. The shot doesn't draw attention to itself by lingering and there's no audio cue to anything being wrong, in fact the music is still quite pleasant. Almost like it was meant to subliminally unnerve you as to what's coming. Really nice touch.

I really like the supernatural movie boom of the 70's that followed on from the success of The Exorcist, much more interesting to me than the slasher boom of the 80's, although I enjoy a lot of those too. Like some of the previous comments I must also single out the score as being exceptionally good. It's the standard by which all other horror soundtracks are measured, as far as I'm concerned. If you put it up against non-horror scores then the competition gets a lot fiercer (Sergio Leone movies, Conan the Barbarian, etc...). Must also mention another classic Kat line: "Here lies B.L. Zebub." Nice. ☺️
