You need to watch the original, "When A Stranger Calls" with Carole Cane. Its the same premise, but even more intense, or at least thats what I think.

2025-03-02 01:26:56 +0000 UTCThe scene that starts at 0:24:42 (the scene at the Christmas party where Mr. Harrison calls his daughter, Clare, with Barb in the background drinking out of a bottle of champagne) uses a SPLIT DIOPTER. It allows the DP to keep both FOREGROUND and BACKGROUND SUBJECTS in focus at the same time, so they can perform together in real time, as opposed to it being an OPTICAL COMPOSITE. Because of the slower films speeds 50 years ago, along with the difficulty of lighting a scene with enough light to have proper DEPTH OF FIELD to hold both in focus, the SPLIT DIOPTER became a commonly used solution. Filmmakers of the '60s and '70s were big fans of its use, including William Friedkin and Martin Scorsese.
