For Patrons Only: Sneak Peek of GoTP

My first post today was public, intended for both patrons and the fans who check this page for snippets of upcoming books. However, this follow-up is just for you guys - a link to the first five chapters of Ghosts of the Past.

As I've mentioned before, this has been a VERY difficult story to write. I think it's partly that it's just plain hard to write a story about antagonists overall. Their motivations are fundamentally flawed, their actions are harmful, their attitudes often abusive. But I'm starting to understand what this story is.

Fundamentally, GotP is a character study in three different kinds of evil: Authoritarian evil created by someone who feels they have a mandate, narcissism and sociopathy, and nihilism caused by the warping effects of trauma. It's been challenging to show this without getting preachy or philosophical. The ascent to heroism through growth and action is much easier to depict than the slide into degeneracy.

Anyway, here's the link: Ghosts of the Past: Ch. 1-5

Please leave your feedback, either by commenting on the document or on this post after you've had a read. I'd be interested to hear what you think.

I actually had the same thought a couple days ago and revisited my draft of Ghosts of the Past: it's better than I thought it was, though it still needs some work to be presentable to an audience. Order of writing projects right now is CiB > Brute Force 1 > GotP. It definitely does tie into CiB, especially the second half that's yet to come.

Hey James. Going back through here and catching up on a lot of your thoughts and all from the past. Now with CiB coming to a front with the plan a Hector has to return to deal with the geis, GoTP plays right into this. Do you think you will continue this or maybe roll some of this in as back story in CiB as they go after the gate? I’m rather curious what other hacks they used to both level and screw up their dragons as well as what they did to take over the eirie.
