UNEDITED REACTION: Virgin – Lorde

Well, here it is!!! What did YOU think of this record??

Comments

AOTY

lisam

oh HELL no babes.

Ivy Fuss

Oh honey no...

Ivy Fuss

Need more in depth commentary on this album after a month 🥹

Mikee Dayrit

i fear i thought broken glass was referring to solar power flopping 😭

Jess Varner

I am also torn by 'current affairs', but after many listens, I'm coming to realize she may be referencing another public coercive relationship to understand her own situation... am I way off base? It is a pretty tortured song and she's crying out for help from her mother.

Róisín

I think it’s missing melodies. It feels a little like an overcorrection on people saying “bring the synth back”

Sam

Girl I have this problem with Willow Smith. Her music is amazing, but her instagram post are just... Please touch less grass and talk to real people

Kikimora

Shapeshifter did it for me. Teared up at work listening to that part of the review. So good

Mia_333

I am so seated for this, we are so back. Scorpio and Taurus coded as you said!! The dark freaky girlies who get it, get it!

Haylee Duncan

“ITS INDUSTRIAL!”

Haylee Duncan

I think you really nailed it. When i look at the song or lyrics, it feels like something i would say/do in my college years with a heavy emphasis on—look at how edgy and intellectual i can be!!! Also. Vagina.

Max Bunny

Thank you for writing that. Feeling the same!! Also, secrets from a girl is one of these songs that i swear shapeshifts every time i listen to it. Always unraveling something new inside of me 🙌 wish more people gave it a shot!

Max Bunny

it's insane how much this album has grown on me

rit

I didn’t love at first but now that it’s marinated a bit I am obsessed. Shapeshifter and broken glass are the standouts for me

Holly

Stop you’re losing me - us to lorde

Elizabeth Heeter

1. Melodrama 2. Pure Heroine 3. Virgin 4. Solar Power

James David Clarke

The Pamela Anderson situation really ruins this album for me. I love her style and the production is so good. But yeah her talking is not good lol.

KimMarks

A lot just kind of sounds like talking over pots and pans

rachel☁️

I’m underwhelmed

rachel☁️

Exact same feelings on current affairs, song is totally ruined by the Pam and Tommy abuse glorification

Katherine

GREAT review Zack…thank you for this! 🫶

Aleesha Hunter

Being a year away in age from Lorde is such a gift

Erica

Her discussions about reckoning with her gender identity combined with the explorations of girlhood and early womanhood on this album is INTRIGUING to me.

Kalyn

Lorde putting out a song named David when I went thru a breakup with someone named that… you see how there’s always a pop girl to save you in your time of need?

shreya

Unfortunately I don’t think so because she really reiterated the romance with it extremely seriously in this stupid interview.

Kat

Amazing review ❤️❤️. I think favorite daughter might be about her mom since her mom’s brother died by suicide.

Amanda

I am aware I am in the minority but I really cannot connect with this album.... There are maybe two songs that I like. I feel like the industrial feeling of the album makes for some of a brutal landscape that I cannot keep me grounded. I am so mentally checked out for most of a songs. It is so weird because I also really connected to all her albums, and yes even solar power. Secrets from a girl who's seen it all went number one in my house. .. In this album, when I tried to make any kind of connection, I felt like I was looking into the abyss seeing the aftermath of Lorde imploding her life. It makes for a decent listen but without more storytelling or, tbh a more palatable narrator, it just felt flat.

Isabella Bicalho

It's not front to back but the production is soooo good and it's growing on me with every listen. Love love love Shapeshifter and Favourite Daughter 💞 And even the weird or cringe bits are at least interesting! With Lorde I just have to remember to ignore her nonsense and focus on the music 😌

Abby

“underwhelming” does sum up my overall feelings on this one. There is something about the whole thing that feels like an album I would probly have had on repeat in high school or college but at this age/stage in my life I just can’t take some of these lyrics very seriously. The weird, edgy mix of overtly sexual meets family trauma meets my vagina is on a feminist crusade or whatever. It all just gives me flashbacks to college open mic nights for beatnik poets or something lol In summary, this album made me feel old

Miss_Lippy

Loved what I've seen of Lorde's Glastonbury performance! Will you be reacting or commenting to Glastonbury sets or performances of various artists? (Please)

Kristen Arms

what is it about im confused

Mikee Dayrit

That string around 10:20 itched my Brain so good.

Jessica Marie

This was better than I thought it would be! The only songs I definetly DONT like are What Was That, Clearblue, and David.

COLBY DEPTULA

to piggy back off this (LOVE grapefruit and tove lo in general btw), if people are down to try some pop folk i’d look into skinny by emily kinney, which i think covers that very similar of feeling of “this is bad and hurting me so much but i can’t stop because i feel like i need it” in broken glass

hxgrl

Yes and yes! It’s one of my faves on the album

Vanessa Vieites

I’ve listened to this album multiple times today. I liked it on first listen but Its only grown on me with each listen. Love the production. Some of the lyrics make me uncomfortable but that seems to have been one of her goals with this project lol

Vanessa Vieites

When Zack realizes what Current Affairs is about....

COLBY DEPTULA

LOST MY MIND

diya

well i learned i'm a massive prude while listening to this album

Ash 🪻

ooo shapeshifter sorry

Olivia B.

“just wanna fall” or whatever it’s called really speaks to my hypersexual trauma response from DV. i love it so much

Olivia B.

I wonder if she is likening the whole Pamela sex tape in Current Affairs to herself as a vulnerable woman “on tape” in David? Like she was romanticizing how “in love” they looked, while knowing behind the scenes it was totally abusive. And similarly musing in David “Will I ever be in love again,” / live the high of that relationship, while at the same time being horrified in hindsight about the abusive nature of the relationship. Speaking from experience, the highs in an abusive relationship can feel unattainable when you’re out of them, especially if they happened when you were young. The highs feel higher due to the dissonance. She’s bad at articulating herself and we may never know, but I’d like to think this is what she meant for my own peace of mind…

Syd

Sameeeee!!!

Syd

I can't decide if I like this better than Pure Heroine. It's not as good as Melodrama, better than Solar Power. But I can't decide if I like it more than PH

Vesper Sinclair

This album is gonna change my life. I’m blown away I think it’s her best work yet. Loved your reaction! I feel like you loved it, other than like 2 songs tho. I was scared when I saw your YouTube thumbnail😭 But I’m glad you really liked it! I’m very excited for if you make a review of the album!

Sean

Will I ever be able to hear it any other way? No. I’m not mad.

Ally ❤️

That final song about “am I ever gonna love again” - feels like a Frank ocean throw back in all the best ways. That’s where I feel that LA driving down the highway at sunset vibe. So good. That’s my favorite song on the album! Thank you so much Zack for the thoughtful reaction.

Ally ❤️

Yes!!! Was surprised he didn’t clock it. I wanna say that it’s not even sampling baby bash but rather who baby bash actually sampled! Og og

Meghan Sullivan

!!!!!!!!

Meghan Sullivan

Omg a new swiftologist series?! Is it gonna be an interview?? 🤭🤭🤭🤭 you’ve been mentioning Adela a lot latelyyyy

Emma S

“I think I like it but I also think I’m underwhelmed by it.” and “It sounds a lot like Lorde is just in a little bit of a transitional period of her life and maybe is only just starting to leave it at best. Which, I can’t even fault her for it, because same.” is what I wrote while journaling today because I happened to be doing so right after I listened to the album (because why not) and I can’t think of a better way to sum up my feelings tbh

mango

I WAS RIDING BAREBACK WITH MY HAIR UNDONEEEEEEEEE

Kayleigh

I’m not a Lorde fan but this album is definitely hitting for me.

Donny

Screaming at “did I just hear the word pussy?!”

Chas

I fear current affairs is the best song ever made. We have no other choice but to ignore the gross Pamela and Tommy line

Katie

The moment you realize what current affairs is about/references is killing me 😭

Cooper

Broken Glass and What Was That? are the only ones added to my fav song playlist the rest is like, poetry with a sound

Batoul Mourad

Great reaction! I interpreted Favourite Daughter as being about her mother not about a man but that could be mummy issues talking

Bella

Had the same thoughts and reactions about the album! Production is on another level here, sooooooo good

Anastasia Davydova

The “Our Song” reference was CRAZYYYYY

Annabel

I’m at “broken glass” while I’m getting ready… whew 🤯🥲🫠😭

oh_annie___

well… we’ll always have melodrama!

Batoul Mourad

Did anyone else catch the Baby Bash “Suga Suga” lyrics in If She Could See Me? Looveeeddd it

Erika

also as a side note, i think lorde is making a connection between herself and the tape/pamela. in david she’s extrapolating if her older ex partner took advantage of her and just wanted to get her young self on tape, maybe pressured her to do certain sexual things that she wasn’t really ready for but went along with anyways.

Clara

jim-e stack is a really good and interesting producer, i think his production is the best part of this album. he’s worked with bon iver and caroline polachek and is also working on the new 1975 album.

Clara

I think its clever to our construction of reactions and opinions to be at peace with the triggers artists choose to develope general topics. If she uses personal and specifical exp we consider cringe or self centered, so what? This isnt a trial, it just showcases how sometimes beaufitul things expose themselves out of obscure and “offensive” ideas. people dont need to be held accountable to situations or interests that may be considered weird. In the end, this music slaps.

diegoriveraservat250@gmail.com

I was also disappointed in this album Broken Glass is my favorite song and What Was That being one of my other favorites.

Lana

I appreciate the message of Broken Glass but I find it so incongruous with the marketing of the album 😩 the constant faceless shots of her bare torso are BLATANT body checking and I had to mute her because it’s triggering! Claiming healing while clearly idolizing her thinness is icky I’m sorry

Cici O

If you like broken glass, I love Tove Lo’s Grapefruit, a bit more uplifting on the issue and more digestible for the normies, in my opinion!

Kat

Needed broken glass so bad. I love how she explores the dichotomy between celebrating healing but also grieving the past behaviors of disordered eating. I was turned off by her interviews referencing her struggles w eating bc she would use romantic phrasing about her starved body but I really appreciate and relate to her honestly in this song

Kat

"A BRIDGE!"-cuteness

Jess Gray

I like this a lot more than I thought I would. Lorde never really spoke to me but this is actually really pleasant

Jaqi Jarboe

so far i really like shapeshifter and david

emma 🌷

Zach kinda giving Hunger games catching fire arena aesthetic rn he look good

MB98

27:07 my exact reaction when I realised as well whyyy I was enjoying the song

Ally

Zach thinking she’s invoking her parents when she was talking about the Pamela and Tommy sex tape I’m crying 😭😭😭😭😭😭

Aaron

The way I was not picking up on the Pamela Anderson stuff until you mentioned it... I was thinking we were talking about her being in an emotionally manipulative relationship where power dynamics were being used to push her into things she wasn't comfortable with and that's why she kept saying "Mama I'm so scared" and now I don't know how to feel... ANYWAY. You mentioned Favorite Daughter and David being connected and it's so true and also those were the two songs that really hit me emotionally. Truly the highlights of the album.

iLaney90

29:36 stoppppp this is giving *the* bon iver autotuned ~shout ~ in the best way possible!!!!

Meghan Sullivan

I’ve been up late freaking out by myself over the album and my bestie hasn’t listened yet.. your reaction came at the perfect time!! Favourite daughter I see being about her relationship with her literal family but also see it being addressed to fans. How much she has strived and pushed herself to meet/surpass fan expectations, her desire for recognition and us to be proud of her. Lorde meets mirrorball!

Ally

For me, this is a provocative album, and I'm listening to it for the third time and I can say that in a positive way. It's not a digestible, perfect and immediate album like Melodrama or even Pure Heroine. It's an album that you need to sit down, digest and let it consume you. Sometimes it will sound imperfect, dirty and generate that feeling of "disgust" but that's because Lorde is showing the listener that we all have a questionable nature, that we have strange tastes and "disgusting" thoughts, which remain in our subconscious. For example, how many people (incel men on Twitter) will judge Lorde for talking about having sex without a condom, when they do the same thing and worse, they don't get medical exams or follow-up with an infectious disease specialist. Again, it will sound provocative at first listen, but after you understand that Lorde is saying this not to tell you whether you should do it or not, whether you agree with it or not, whether it is right or wrong (in legal or moral terms), but in the human aspect of all of us carrying strangeness within ourselves. The album fits like a glove and is great. note: except for that line in Current Affairs that you mentioned, that is the only thing on the album that for me is unjustifiable. I think Lorde does not have people in her life to say "let's calm down", "let's take you to bed grandma and rest".

Enzo Reis

HOLY SHI THE PAMELA AND TOMMY LINE WHAT

Ashley Taylor

Harry Potter mention in a Lorde album review is taking me out

Rachel

the way i also didn’t get the pamela anderson line until you read it out loud whyyyyy did she do that 😭

Lauren

11:54 yes @ “melodrama’s evil sister” I especially got louvre vibes w the strings !! And was also wowed by her unique vocal style post bridge in shapeshifter!

Meghan Sullivan

Standout tracks: WWT, Current Affairs, Clearblue, ISCSMN, David.

Rachel

I liked it a lot more than I thought I would after being just whelmed from the singles, but didn't LOVE it. I think I'm at Melodrama > PH > Virgin > SP

Rachel

Never beating the NoDaysOffOlogist allegations!!!

Amanda 🫧

I am not a Lorde fan so tuning into the record alongside you will make this experience more bearable. Can’t wait to see what you think!

Natalia

I loved it ! Listened to it last night in my kitchen dancing around with a bottle of champagne.

Cecilia

This record silenced me, not in a good way.

MONTAY

Oh baby we are SO FUCKING BACK w this album. I immediately connected w it in a way I haven’t w Lorde, or sort of any artist, in a bit. At present, my standout tracks — not including singles — are shapeshifter, favourite daughter, current affairs and if she could see me now. I’m a couple listens in (short af album benefit lol) and it’s already getting better and better w each revisit wtfffffffff. I’m so darn pleased 🤩😍🕺🌌🩻

Meghan Sullivan

Thank you for this so soon!!!

Lisa

It wasn’t what I expected. I don’t love it. I really wanted to and I did really like what was that but even that song sounds like a melodrama b side. I’m hoping it grows on me

Emeraldgreen373
