2025-11-29 01:37:35 +0000 UTCI love this movie and book, except for the insulting trans stuff, misogyny, fatphobia, etc... Even though they said Buffalo Bill wasn't trans it's one of many movies to depict people on the queer and trans spectrum as psychos so that aspect hasn't aged well and any adaptation would have to handle it very differently (and preferably leave out any trans inferences altogether). I know Bryan Fuller's been saying he wants to do a limited TV series of it with Mads' Hannibal and Zendaya as Clarice (and he kind of combined Clarice and Will Graham in the Hannibal TV series), hopefully he'd handle it well if he did get to do it.

However, Jonathan Demme can't claim credit... that one was directed by Anthony Minghella, who earned an Oscar nomination for also adapting the screenplay from the brilliant series of novels from Patricia Highsmith.

I was so stoked in one of my psych classes we got to analyze Hannibal and how he puts everyone around him at unease. Another year we got to discuss Buffalo Bill (inspired by Ed Gein) and the differences between being transgender and the paraphilia autogynephilia. Of course I can't speak to the harms this film may have caused for trans folks. I will say that (especially for it's time) I'm happy to see that the film makers put in (teeny but it's there) effort to specify that Trans people are rarely (if ever) perpetrators of violence, and that Buffalo Bill is NOT trans. 2025-11-27 18:25:00 +0000 UTCI'm really glad towards the beginning of the movie Hannibal explicitly said that Billy is not a transsexual that he's just mentally ill and his violence is a result of the violence he experienced as a child. Because that way nobody can say oh this is how trans people are because obviously we know that's not true and I'm glad the movie took the time to make the distinction. I also love the fact that the only time you see Hannibal really lose control of his emotions is when Miggs does that thing to Clarice. He really got MAD at the disrespect.
