2026-01-08 11:52:03 +0000 UTCHAPPY BIRTHDAY, WES!!!! 🥳🎁🍾🎈🎂 Wishing you a 30, flirty and thriving year ahead! 😊 It’s been awhile since I’ve seen this, and gotta say, it was so fun watching it with the two of you but also funny that there were a few things y’all were too young to get from the eras. So just to clarify a few things: * Jenna wearing her nightgown to work - So you might’ve missed what TomTom said to her in the cab, but it was something about the slip dress is “so 97.” And she was both correct and incorrect, because through out the entire 90s and even into the early 00s, women wore slip dresses and other types of dresses and tops that were pretty much just lingerie. Some of it was cute, but some of it, kinda 😬 lol. So honestly, her nightgown wouldn’t have looked that out of place at the time. However, y’all’s discomfort over it had me 🤭 * The Thriller dance - Oh yes, Wes, we ALL knew the Thriller moves back then! Little Me learned every single one for my grade school talent show, and can still bust them out today if called upon to do so 😂 * TomTom’s redesign presentation - So when you guys said that she was ahead of her time, the sort of joke of it is actually supposed to be the opposite. In the presentation, she mentions “heroin chic” but beyond. “Heroin chic” was a fashion and style trend that started in the early 90s, but had died out by the close of the decade. It was characterized by thin, waifish models with dead-eyed stares, deconstructed fashion that pulled from subcultures, and aesthetics that were about edginess, decay and nihilism. So it’s the perfect counterpoint to Jenna’s redesign embracing everyday life and a more wholesome pov. But also it’s meant to make TomTom look foolish because, even though there’s been some style trends in the last few years that are somewhat of a heroin chic-like resurgence, in 2004, it would’ve been very outdated and behind the times. Speaking of Jenna’s redesign, I also had to giggle at Wes questioning what her direction actually was and having a hard time seeing what her specific vision for the magazine would be, because tbh, I felt the same! As much as I love this movie, and as much as I appreciate the sweetness of what she is presenting, I always felt no actual publication would ever go for such a vague and unsophisticated idea 😝 Oh well, it still works though, because it’s just a cute fantasy after all! 😄
