2025-06-28 01:06:58 +0000 UTCtheres a GREAT 45 min documentary about sleepaway camp with all the actors as adults on youtube! highly recommend its really interesting and fun, im not sure whether it was in the documentary or elsewhere but the director said if he could go back, the one part he would change is when she murdered the little kids because it was too cruel and all the other deaths feel much more justified

And it was so not what I expected based on the dumb shit other kids would say about it in the 90s - they definitely didn't talk about the actual context of the story, just about the shock factor of the final scene. All that said, holy shit this was gorgeously campy through and through. As a Brooklyn girl, I love a low budget anything filmed in the NYC area because all the actors just keep their thickass natural accents, and it's always hilarious to me. lol

The whole movie is camp, but that ending was insane and kind of turns the movie back around to being something memorable, when before it seems like a generic slasher. I think the different analyses and criticisms on the ending also probably have more thought put into them than the movie ever did. An ending like that is going to invite all sorts of responses, but it really seems like it was just done for shock value. The conversation it has created is more interesting than the movie itself imo, but I still enjoy it for how singular it feels in the 80’s slasher space.

Thank goodness my mom never sent me to summer camp! Talk about trauma. Oh, and I can confirm we guys wore the short-shorts and crop tops. When I first saw this film many years ago, I knew about the twist beforehand. But I legitimately thought the loopy aunt—who kept reminding the audience she was a doctor—had performed a sex change operation on Peter/Angela. That last image of a snarling Angela stays with you. Judy could’ve been one of those villains you love to hate. But she was vile throughout with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. I hated her more with every scene she was in. When you can’t wait for a character to be bumped off, you know they’re awful. I’ve never watched any of the sequels and I don’t know if they carry on from where this one left off or not. A lot of questions went unanswered.

Hubs is a therapist who counsels teens with gender dysphoria who are at risk of self-harm and says you could use this movie to make a strong case for gender-affirming care. Look at how much Aunt Martha (who is the REAL villain imo) fucked up Peter- deciding arbitrarily that he would have to live as a girl, behave and look like a girl, even though he isn't one- It had to be confusing for him to be attracted to Judy (which is why I think "Angela" stared at her so much)- AND to possibly be attracted to Paul, even though as children they saw their dad and his bf together and thought it was funny. Ronnie and Ricky were real ones, though- always standing up for "Angela". Ronnie's heart was as big, as his shorts and crop tops were tiny. And Ricky's infamous, "eat shit and LIVE" is a regular insult around our house. We should all have a Ricky in our lives.

2025-06-16 18:04:06 +0000 UTCThe first time I watched Sleepaway Camp I was absolutely gagged by the ending. It was the most twisted ending I’ve ever seen. The horror and shock of realizing that not only Angela is the killer but that she is actually a boy , Peter the surviving twin ( The real Angela died from the accident). I believe John (Peter/Angela’s dad) was secretly dating the other guy from the beginning of the movie. Some theorized that when Peter saw his dad in bed with another man it confused him. Also on top of that, the fact that Aunt Martha abused Peter as a kid to become a girl, which caused even more damaged. Then he goes to camp and all these adolescents are exploring their bodies sexually. Now Peter has already been traumatized enough by the hands of his Aunt but on top of that he severely gets teased and bullied when other guys and girls begin to tease him stuff especially the girls about their changing bodies. At that moment is probably when Peter/Angela snapped and went on a killing spree. Back in the day, people weren’t as accepting and supportive of the LGBTQ+ community, which could’ve explained why certain topics were portrayed the way it was. But in a way, I’m grateful that began to introduce lil bits of it back then and lead to where we are now where the community has grown so much. We still face issues today but we continue to prosper. Overall, the movie was amazing and did its job of giving us the most twisted ending of all time. Yes I definitely recommend that you guys watch the sequels! 💜
